Season 6 Episode 13 "Bad News":
Marshall receives the news that his father has died from a heart attack.
| Facts about the ending: The twist ending of Marshall's father's death was the result of show co-creators and producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas' desire to explore the issue of the characters experiencing such a loss.[2] Bays said that "these kind of moments happen when you don't expect them. We wanted to shock the audience the way the characters were shocked. So much of what we love about the show is the relatability of it, and we try to create characters and stories that people see themselves in. As we've ticked off every milepost of young adulthood, sadly this is another one of those mileposts". Segel and Hannigan themselves were kept in the dark about the final scene. Segel said the original script had Lily saying she was pregnant, but on the scene's actual shooting day, the producers revealed that the scene will turn out differently. He and Hannigan worked out a plan wherein Segel would only know that his cue to react would be on Hannigan finishing her line with the word "it". The scene was done in only one take.[4]
Throughout the episode, numbers appear on ordinary objects counting down from 50 to 1. This is a countdown from the beginning of the episode to the eventual bad news, which is told right after the "1" is shown. As the final scene of the episode closes, a parking meter is in the background displaying a red 'expired' state.The countdown was an idea taken from the 1988 film Drowning by Numbers; through the course of that film, the numbers 1 to 100 appear in order, sometimes seen in the background, and sometimes spoken by the film's characters. According to Bays, the countdown was used to give an early signal to the audience that something big was about to happen at the end of the episode. |

@@thephantom4567 looks like it's only partially true. They were given a script where Lilly was supposed to announce her pregnancy but the day of shooting they gave them this script instead. Jason apparently didn't want to know how Alyson was going to actually break the news until they were shooting so it's a little improvised. Found an interview of them on "SheKnows".

Actually Jason thought the “bad news” would be about Lily conceiving. He didn’t see the script about the end but that’s what he assumed. So his reaction was genuine.

Im so sorry for your loss... I lost my father suddenly and unexpectedly nearly 10 years ago to the date (today is 2/6/23, he passed 2/27/13). No matter how much time passes, this scene still kicks me right in the gut. In fact it's why Im watching this scene, coming up on 10 years. I want you to know, even though I am a random voice on the interwebs, I understand your pain and I genuinely hurt for you. As weird as it might seem, I'd offer a hug to you because that's all I wanted when my dad passed. Take as much time as you need. There is no such thing as a "get over it" time frame. Anyone else who says so has never experienced that level of loss. It does hurt and still hurts 10 years later, though time does lessen the sharpness of the pain. I'm here for you Zafa. Things will certainly get better from here, I promise you. Be well.

This scene has stayed with me. We came - to losing my mom to four sudden cardiac death events, first she dropped and was death rattling and down for 16min before a faint pulse resumed. Those 16 minutes, and the touch and go of the week that followed, we thought we lost her. My sister called me when EMTs were still working on her and the way we cried, the way we said we weren't ready, and crumpled...They captured the emotions perfectly with this scene.

sigh my dad died when i was 12. i was young. talk about not being ready. i remember me and my dad were inseparable just a guy you always wanted to be around. but when my sisters told me i just froze. i didn’t feel nothing. didn’t cry once not even at his funeral. so many people came to his funeral family friends. ppl trying to support my mother and sisters and there i was just playing with my friends and cousins like it was nothing. i became a father myself nearly 20 years later than it hit me. goddamn it why’d he have to die. i miss that man. now i tell my boys about him. i wish he was here to watch my kids grow up. i wish he could’ve met my wife. i think he would’ve really liked her a lot.

As sad as this moment was it did kinda come out of nowhere. like the episode wasn't even about marshals dad and it kind of just happens randomly. i get dieing that way is kinda random even in real life but for a character like marshals dad u would have thought they would have set it up a bit more. there was no sign before that moment that he was in poor health infact litraly the scean just before that he makes a joke about marshal going to masturbate in the bathroom
