How I nearly caused a Collision - Driving Instructor makes a Mistake

On Sunday the 17/04/22 when driving home from the Peak District UK, I made a mistake that could have caused a nasty collision, it was only be chance that a collision didn't happen. In this video I share exactly what happened, why I think it happened and how I can prevent it happening again.

This junction looks like a prime candidate for one of those REDUCE SPEED NOW signs, as well as another sign on the right hand side of the slip road showing the layout of the junction. This layout would prevent lorries in the filter lane giving the wrong impression, and remove any doubts about what you should be doing in the right hand lane

@@ConquerDriving in Sweden we always have a roundabout sign on both sides of the road before every roundabout, if there’s a risk you’ll be going too fast entering the roundabout there’s warning signs earlier that warn you, don’t know why it’s not a thing there

This road should have roundabout warning signs on both sides aswell as reduced speed signs. This looks dangerous as hell.

I commend you for admitting to making a mistake. It is what separates a good driver from a bad driver. I genuinly think, though, that this section can be improved by road planners. If it cought you out with all your experience a novice driver has no chance. I think there definitely need to be red roundabout warning signs on both sides of the road.

At the speed that anyone would be approaching that roundabout, a roundabout warning sign would be very appropriate. It would give you time to react, which is much better than having to see that large green roundabout sign just before the give-way line. And that's only if you can actually see it.

Hi Richard, I’m an ADI based in Sheffield who used to work in Doncaster, commuting daily past this area. Now travel to Pontefract regularly by car and know this exit very well! Normally I take the left hand lane to go A1 North, but often see drivers in that lane you were in approaching too fast, treating it like the slip rd on left. There’s a blind view of any cars to your right as their height keeps them hidden. Local news recently showed footage of a lorry approaching that junction from under the bridge and something had not given way...closed the roundabout for hours. Thank you for showing us and being honest - agree there would be a huge improvement in safety by putting some signage on the right. Next time I go on this road, I’ll think of you ☺️👍

everyone makes mistakes and the outcome of those mistakes depends a lot on luck. in my opinion, it is true that a good driver is one who can minimise the consequences of those mistakes (wether that is a collision or not). that also includes being very careful and preventing collisions with other people who made a mistake. for example, about what happened on the video, if i were inside the roundabout and saw a car apporaching quickly from the outside, i would probably slow down and get ready to brake. i live in greece and i have literally prevented a collision with another vehicle who did just that. unfortunately, unless there are signs, the person approaching the roundabout has the right of way, but on that specific one there are stop signs, which the other driver never cared for, she just kept on going

How bizarre! I’m an ADI in Lincolnshire and came across this same junction for the first time a couple of months ago, and made the same mistake! Like you said, the video really doesn’t do it justice. I’m the moment it really does come out of nowhere, especially due to all of the HGVs that you come across in the left lane. I remember overtaking a car, when I was much younger, and only realised while I was on the wrong side of the road that he actually had his indicator on and was turning right. I sighed with relief after getting away with it and mentally gave myself a right scolding. Like you, my passenger was totally unaware of the danger at the time. I learned from it though and have been much more careful overtaking ever since. Appreciate your honesty. Some other driving instructors could take a leaf out of your book.

7hr round trip just to film a video about a mistake you made... Hats off to you! I think advanced giveaway markings or a roundabout sign on the right would help the situation / reduce the likelihood of something like this happening. I'm not sure if they're allowed to paint giveway triangles / slow markings on only one lane however.. People in the left lane might think perhaps the markings apply to them and the left side has washed away. Perhaps an advanced forward arrow on the left and giveway on the right would be what I'd do.. But I don't build the roads! I wonder how many other junctions similar scenarios can occur.

Having a driving licence is a lifetime commitment to learning to drive. Respect for this video, because "Learning from experience" (the thing that happens after you pass your test, i.e. show minimum safety knowledge and skills) is actually exactly that - to analyse the mistakes you and others make with the sole purpose of avoiding them in future. If anyone thinks that getting a licence is a tick-box exercise, to me they are dangerous by default. This is not a course/certificate on MS Word to fool your boss. A driving licence is allowing you to continue learning to drive ON YOUR OWN. When mistakes happen (we are all humans, we do them, even if we are experts), if you don't analyse carefully what happened and decide what you are going to change so it doesn't happen again, you are not learning or even worse - creating a bad habit, which will cenrtainly cost you causing or being involved in an accident, which may cause your or someone elses death/injuries. Driving is a constant, continuous, fast-pace RISK ASSESSMENT. And as such, one can never say "I know everything now. I can now stop trying to improve".

Doesn’t sound at all like you’re trying to make excuses, it was very useful to know how exactly you missed things. Sadly where I’m from it’s always very busy and signs are either few and far between, or about 16000 all at once at the last moment (sat nav seems to have no idea most of the time). I’m used to it now, but if I want to go anywhere new I find myself finding and following the route on maps and street few a dozen times before I feel like I can do it

It's likely to take you're concentration away from something at a crucial moment when you're trying to focus on whatever scenario it is. (Like a whiney passenger that doesn't know when to shh haha). Brilliant video Richard. Very instructive and I love the way you own up to a mistake and take learning points from it so that others can benefit. I took and passed my IAM Roadsmart Masters test recently: reportedly the highest possible civilian (non emergency services) driving qualification one can achieve. But I have been greatly comforted by the fact that no driver is perfect. So true! I still stuffed up an approach to a junction a few days ago. Risk was low but I majorly inconvenienced other drivers and embarrassed myself. I too went back to try again, to see how and why I went wrong! However, my journey to do so was only 40 minutes, not 7 hours. That took dedication from you! 👏🙂

Was turning right across a 2 lane dual carriageway with a center reservation..had to have both ways clear as van wouldnt fit in middle. checked left, all clear...looking right a transit was coming towards me with their left indicator on so i waited until he started turning into my junction and then started off across the lanes...A gold jeep was beside the white van the whole time and completely hidden! we both emergency stopped with the jeep taking to the central reservation!!! I sat in shock looking at the jeep driver and thankful he had such amazing reactions. Driving 27 years and couldn't believe the mistake I made. Always learning. Exactly, you're constantly learning. Anticipating what another driver is about to do in any given situation is also crucial. Hanging back and letting the other driver make their move first is often best. You get better at anticipating through driving experience.

This isn’t related to this video but I just wanted to tell you how much your videos have helped me learn manual. I’m in the us so only ~15% of people even know how to drive manual while 4% actually drive manual on a daily basis. I already had my drivers license but recently got a manual specifically a 2012 civic SI. I had minimal experience before getting this car a couple hours on absolute junk boxes that needed to be push started whenever I would stall (not optimal learning conditions) and tractors and forklifts. Your videos have helped immensely. After getting used to the very grippy clutch compared to what I learned on it’s has been a peace of cake except for hills which I am still practicing but progressing slowly but surely. I live in the northwest US so every other road is considered a mountain in some flat areas of the world. Just wanted to thank you for your help.

9:30 Even moving the sign would be an incredible improvement. As the left lane has a dedicated lane, so they are less affected by the fact it is a roundabout, compared to people in the right lane who would have to do several checks before they can continue in their lane. UK roundabouts always seemed vastly different to what I'm used to (compared to NL). Maybe because they are used in different situations and flavours compared to NL roundabouts. 8:20 make more near collisions so we can learn more ;)

From personal experience, and because i usually only drive around town, and occasionally drive elsewhere, i end up going on autopilot sometimes, and just let my muscle memory do the driving, which is very very wrong, great video nonetheless Richard, it's good to learn from mistakes, cheers.

Thanks for being honest that everyone can make mistakes, and you have shown how hard it is to always be aware esspecly if you never driven there, with hiden signs and it just guess work. i have come across where i have made a mistake but lucky was able to get away with it. It just all about how you dealt with the situation, imagine a high speed BMW speeding down that lane and would sure not have stopped in time. Best tip is, if you are unsure whats ahead just slow down untill you can see the clear picture.

This is a big point of why there should be hanging signs on big junctions. As you mentioned a small vehicle or a big lorry can really Block the view of signs. Also major point that you showed people that you made a mistake, is okay to make mistakes as long you learned and teached others from this. Well done!

Thanks for posting this video. That looks like an appalling stretch of road! As well as a sign on the right I would also expect some white lines across the lane to indicate the need to slow down as you approach the give way line. I’m glad you’re OK.

I know that junction well as we use it during our motorway training sessions from Derbyshire but we are always using the left filter lane to travel North. We therefore can have the opposite problem of learners thinking they need to slow or even stop as if the lane enters the roundabout (and this is a common mistake made by many other drivers judging by the sudden speed reductions we’ve witnessed!). I’ve been driving 41 years and still make the odd mistake where only experience has prevented it from becoming more serious. Well done for ‘fessing up and more importantly learning from your mistake (and hopefully allowing others to do so too).

Seems a good point to state how a good sat-nav can help with unfamiliar roads, being able to see the road ahead on a map can be really helpful in unfamiliar places. Fair play for making this video, and to be fair the local authority could do a much better job signing that roundabout

Thank you for posting this video. At the beginning of this year I was involved in a minor collision with a motor scooter on a very small roundabout ('minor' being a relative term - the rider was a bit grazed from face planting after I clipped the rear of his vehicle). Where I live, there are numerous tiny domed roundabouts (less than a few metre in diameter). This particular roundabout was set at a T junction at the crest of a hill. It was raining heavily. As I approached the T junction with the intention of turning right, I slowed down to around 20 km/h, and visually scanned from my right to my left. All was clear to my right. However, as my gaze swung to my left, the motor scooter was in front of me as I entered the roundabout. He was travelling straight through from my right to my left. I veered to the right to avoid him, but clipped the rear wheel and carrier, and he went sprawling. Four months later, I received the infringement notice - Failure to give way at a roundabout and careless driving. The outcome was 20 demerit points a NZD150 fine and a warning. Since then, I approach this roundabout, scan left to right and slow right down, to prepare to stop. Roundabouts are useful, but they are certainly not risk free.

Hi Richard, come and have a drive in and around Edinburgh, where loads of road signs and warning signs (!) are hidden behind greenery; bushes and branches, road lines are often not visible on approach or are visible at the very last moment and there are hardly signs on the side of the road to inform the driver which lane to take. As a driving instructor I am happy when lines are repainted so they are visible again: well that is a sad thing actually. Thanks for making your videos.

I have driven in Edinburgh, beautiful place. Colchester is also bad for road signs and markings, of course I don't have a problem here as it's easy when you know the area.

I only passed my test 5 months ago and recently made a silly mistake where I misjudged a gap on a busy roundabout which led to me inadvertently cutting someone up. They honked their horn and, no word of a lie, it did frighten me. Thankfully, nobody was hurt and the other driver moved on and left the roundabout. It has knocked my confidence slightly though as I haven't stopped thinking about it and catastrophising the whole thing. Even as a learner, each time I made a mistake I had a huge problem with dwelling on them and beating myself up about it. This is the reason why I can't thank you enough for making this video since it portrayed a slightly similar situation to what I went through. It's so reassuring for me to know that even the most experienced and skilled drivers make mistakes from time to time.

It was a good point about signs being obscured by large lorries etc, and at this time of year there are many more that are hidden behind vegetation, until they cut it back.

Hi, very good example that we have to be focused nearly all the time when driving. Also, I passed my official exam two days before. Thank you for your advices, because one of them saved me, when I had no chance to stop at an amber. I will of course watch more and more to improve my technique :P

Thank you for sharing this Richard. Again, very brave of you to own up to this mistake. If it were me, I would be using a sat nav when I navigate especially in an area I didn't know so it would tell you something like "At the roundabout...". I would also do as you've said before where you look at the route on google street view especially with large junctions or roundabouts like the one you experienced.

They could add a give way sign board on the YOUR side of the road! Also increase the height of the roundabout sign on the OTHER side or add one more in case anyone misses the first one because of the big vehicles...good video to create awareness... appreciate it!

Well done for making this video Richard! And I'm sure that the road layout was incorrect as their should have been more warning signs on BOTH sides of the road - so this needs to be taken up with the local council I think! Glad you got lucky there and glad you are still with us to tell the tale! Great video and love all your content - as a fellow ADI I would have made the same mistake you did, so it's the road signs at fault not you in my opinion.

i literally missed this exact roundabout on a similar drive (except i was heading north). luckily nobody was on the roundabout so i bombed around it. i now know to take it easy when you don’t know the area.

the fantastic part is he actually admitted unlike other drivers but everyone makes mistakes even if your experienced you never know ur knowledge may be tested to the maximum.
