@@Holliethedog As far as I know, the highway code doesn't say anything about not using fog lights in heavy rain. As long as the visible distance is less than 100 m, I don't see a problem. You can't argue it's safer to drive without fog lights if your car is basically invisible from behind without them. Also, I would turn off the rear fog lights if there's someone driving right behind me.

You mentioned snorkels, but it's also wise to check where the air intake of your car is. It can be in the middle or on either side. Sometimes even on the bottom near the road, instead of right under the hood/bonnet. It's more a straw instead of a snorkel in that case.

Do you hold it down? Do you come off the clutch fully? Would love to see it in practice (even if the car is stationary). Thanks a lot Richard!

I stay on the gas, keep the exhaust blowing if you're in water, letting off the power can cause the exhaust to momentarily suck. Revs around 1,500rpm should do it then use the clutch to control your speed. Not good for the clutch but better than water in the engine.

10:30 - why would you steer against the skid? Wouldn’t you steer into the direction of the skid- for example the rear of the car skids to the left and is facing the left, therefore you would steer to the left to cancel the skid...
@hrashidi1003 жыл бұрын
i think hes referring to the front of the car in his example, but you guys both mean the same thing. if the car is skidding clockwise, the front will be facing the right (e.g. from 2PM), and the back will be facing the left (e.g. from 8PM). so what hes saying is that from the point of view of the front you have to steer left "against the skid" to counter the clockwise turning. what youre saying is that from the point of view of the back you have to steer left "with the skid" to counter the clockwise turning. when youre spinning clockwise, which is the right hand side, you will have to steer left to straighten the car regardless.

Reminds me of a time, in pretty heavy rain on a 50mph road, any time I went above 40 or so the steering wheel started to jitter. I can only assume I was planing a little. Stupid question: it is surely sensible to keep your speed below the speed where the wheel jitters, even if the speed limit is well above that, like 40mph on a 70mph motorway? Visibility wasn't terrible.

In Germany it's illegal to use your rear foglight in the rain.
@han20323 жыл бұрын
Same in the Netherlands, one is only allowed to use rear fog light, when the visibility is less than 50 meters in the snow or in the fog, but Never in the rain.
@hamsterama3 жыл бұрын
In the US, I don't even think rear foglights exist. Law doesn't require cars to be equipped with either front or rear foglamps. Although most car manufacturers equip their cars with front foglights if the car is sold in a part of the country where fog is a problem, such as California. I live in Ohio, though, and cars here aren't sold with foglamps. We have maybe one or two days a year when there's fog. I have two cars, one I purchased new in 2009, and one I purchased new this year, and neither car has foglamps.
@han20323 жыл бұрын
@@hamsterama In the Netherlands law doesn't require cars to be equipped with front fog lamps, but rear fog lamps are mandatory, one may not drive when the rear fog lamps are missing or broken. One can use front fog lamps when the visibility is less than 200 meters, due to fog, rain or snow; at this time it's not necessary to use dipped lights (and better without). One can use rear fog lamps when the visibility is less than 50 meters, due to fog or snow; it's strictly prohibited to use rear fog lamps in the rain.
@hamsterama3 жыл бұрын
@@han2032 Come to think of it, I just noticed above that I kept switching between saying fog lights and fog lamps. LOL! Either word is acceptable, but I think I've heard fog lamps used more. Anyway, we have white-out blizzard weather sometimes in the winter, where it can be very difficult to see the car in front of you on the highway. Rear fog lamps would indeed be helpful. Seems like a great safety feature for those of us who live in areas where we get snowstorms. You might have seen on the news photos of wintertime multi-car pile up accidents in the US, and often the cause is poor visibility. Who knows, maybe if we're lucky, fog lamps will eventually be offered as optional equipment here in the US.

You can get a fault, best to use them in the rain, it's up to the examiner to determine if they were really needed or not, it all comes down to how much visibility has been reduced.
