Unfortunately, you won't be Croatian for long. As soon as the children start school, you will immediately take them to Canada. Unfortunately, you will be right, Croatian schools are the worst in the world, the education system in Croatia is terrible and stressful for a child. Canada has one of the best education systems in the world. But, make sure that one day they return to the Homeland. Never and nowhere, not even in Canada, will they have that balance in life between work and peace, as they have in Croatia. Canada does not have that peace, that easy way of life in a fast world, nor will it ever have.

Congrats. I moved here from the UK in 09 and wasn't planning to become a citizen because we were all citizens of the EU. Then my countrymen decided they didn't want freedom of movement in the EU so straight after the Brexit vote I applied and in about a year I was a citizen, in fact I got the notification just before Xmas 6 years ago. Because I had that short time of still being an EU citizen I didn't need to take a Croatian language or history test. This summer me and my Croatian family travelled to the UK with our lovely blue Croatian passports.

Good on you for acting fast. Saw a lot of Brits with big egos thinking they wouldn't be kicked out of Spain, Portugal, France, etc so they didn't take the proper steps like you and they were in for a world of hurt.

I see people often think that nationality, ethnicity and citizernship are the same thing, but they are not. I don't know how in the West, but in Croatia when you say Croat (Hrvat) it means the ethnicity (narodnost). I don't know why, but many people in Croatia ethnicity calling nationality (nacionalnost) but it's completely wrong because nationality shoud mean the country where you were born. The ethnicity is inherited by father, his father and so on. The citizenship (državljanstvo) you can get, among other, by living in Croatia for a certain period of time so you could have the same citizen rights like any other in the country. Anyhow, you are the regular croatian citizen now and you deserve respect for that.

For all thise complaining about Croatian bureaucracy, try applying for the Canadian ETA. The number of passwords, tutorial videos one need to watch just to be able to fill an online form is crazy. Plus, in case you need to send additional information, they will get back to you one month after they requested it. Then you answer some additional questions and wait one more month for their reply.

Congrats Sarah!!! I'm just like you, both a Canadian and Croatian Citizen. i went through the Family tree route to obtain mine here in the Toronto area. The gentleman at the Croatian Embassy that I dealt with in Mississauga at the time was such a pleasure to work with and got things done very quickly. This was just before Croatia entered into the EU, so it was a bit easier at the time as well for that reason. TIP****** Just a note to anyone applying in the future, make sure you always apply for your Canadian "LONG FORM" Birth Certificate. You will have to pay a fee for it, but honestly if you don't have it, your honestly just wasting your time. I'm planning on retiring in Dallmatia within the next 5 years 🤞🤞

I am currently getting my dual citizenship with Croatia based on my grandfather & grandmother immigrating to the US. I have an appointment in May 2024 with the Croatian Embassy in Los Angeles. I have 90% of the documents needed so far. I have a lawyer in Croatia making sure I have everything I need when I go to the embassy. You're lucky. I was told it could take up to 5 years for approval.

Congratulations!!! I’m also Canadian like you & I have applied for Croatian citizenship based on decent as my grandfather was born in Dubica! It took me *2 years* to gather all of the correct documents, do the translations etc. I have submitted it all to the Croatian consulate in Canada & now I also wait. I’m nervous about getting a call telling me I need something more (my papa changed his last name from Maryanovich to Marian but my mom’s long form birth certificate had a stamp saying “official name change” so *hopefully* it is enough bc I was worried about proving/explaining that). We have truly enjoyed your visits about Croatia & we spent 3 weeks there in July last summer & we LOVED it.

Big support for your citizenship application! Yes, I know this process takes long but I think you're gonna finally be Croatian citizen. First i want to congratulate you on becoming a Croation citizen! I am Canadian living in Toronto, however, my mother is Croation, from Ribnik and came to Canada at a young age. I too am in the process of getting my citizenship. Just trying to gather all the documentation needed. Sarah I must say you put me to shame, you speak Croation so well! When I was a little girl I spoke Croation fluently as well as Macedonian, however, unfortunately, because I don't use it much now, I have lost a lot, and am kind of shy about trying to speak it, for the sake of making mistakes and sounding silly. My hats off to you! Is that a requirement of citizenship? Speaking Croation fluently? Any other insite you could give me would be greatly appreciated. I love your channel, you have a beautiful family and actually hope to go to Croatia some day soon. Thanks again for a very informative video.

I’m going to start my process as an American in California who’ll be married very soon to a straight lineage Croatian born there citizen, and I’m also 1st generation Italian (and will be applying for that citizenship as well ) , we are moving to Croatia very soon permanently , just came back after 3 months there, which we go every year to his home. Great to have this information to know about residency etc. I can’t wait to start the process ! I’m just still trying to learn the language so that part worries me . I already speak 3 languages and Croatian has been the hardest! We have an excellent (family) attorney out of Zadar to help us thru this process ! I’m so excited. I hated coming home after this trip… Croatia is where I belong! Absolutely love love love it there ! ❤

Not worth it, unless you are rich so that you can buy properties as a civilian in Croatia. Otherwise, trash country for the average human.

You're very, very wellcome to Croatia! Many of us in Croatia would be extremely happy to see as much as possible our fellow Croats to come back here since we're in desperate need of some new, fresh thoughts, experts, quality people with international experience, new working ethics, international connections to open up Croatia as much as possible to new opportunities... And sadly Croatia is also experiencing steep decline of population (over 4.7 million back in 1991. and only 3.8 mill in 2021.) that is threatening future development and economic growth so ALL POSSIBLE good people are very wellcome to contribute to common wellbeing in country that is already much, much better of but needs more people to populate many empty areas with large potentials. And there's HUGE pool of people with Croatian background worldwide that is even much larger than actual number or Croats in Croatia. Only handfull of these people, let's say half a million of them in near future would be huge game changer for all of us!

I’ll be honest, it’s three years that I’m living and working in Croatia and I would like to get that citizenship. Hope I’ll get there one day as you my dear Sarah. I’m so glad you made this video! I’m American and just recently obtained my Croatian citizenship by descent and it took 4 long years! We are now waiting for my hubby to get his by marriage through me. It’s already been a year. Hoping we can move to Croatia sometime next year! I’m curious to know what citizenship your mom had? I was raised by a mom with a different citizenship as me as well. She met and married my father in Korea and later became an American citizen when I was an adult. I also have a permanent birthright visa in Korea, but unfortunately they do not allow dual citizenship. Congrats to you! And so glad you are making videos again.
