Hi Sarah and Ivan! Just wanted you to know I recently returned from my first (but definitely not last) trip to Croatia. Practicing with your Common Phrases video before I went, I was able to communicate pretty well with everyone I met in Croatia. The lovely people of Croatia expressed tons of appreciation everytime I greeted them correctly, or thanked them. Their favorite was when I suggested to my local guide, "Idemo Jesti!" Thanks for your great work!

Great job guys. A little tipping tips for Cro. As Sarah told go with filling but it's common to give the difference to a round number. For beer if it's 18 you give 20. For two if its 36 go with 40. If price is like 88, 100 will be ok. If you go for a nice meal and dinner for two is like 360 go with 400. If it's meal for 4 and will be 720, 750 is ok but if everything was great go with 800. So, you don't need to go with %. Hope that this helps a little.

Thank you so much for your tipping guide, finally some concrete advice! May I ask for some further advice? How much would you tip a taxi driver for a 400 kuna ride and a 500 kuna ride? Is 50 kunas too much? Hvala unaprijed :)
@badelinjo2 жыл бұрын
No need to tip taxi driver like in bar. You can also make a round number so left somethig for coffe or so. If it's 400 or 500 it's a long drive so 50 is just fine. No more than that.

Love you guys, and love your channel! I live in Belgium but already visited Croatia 9 times. I did the salsa festival in Rovinj 8 times, this year also the pre-weekend in Opatija. About 10 years ago I also did a group travel through Croatia from Zagreb to Split with a lot of stops along the road (Plitvice lakes, hiking in Paklenica mountains + visiting Starigrad, visiting Brac + Bol, Sibenik, Makarska). In a few weeks I’ll go to Croatia for the 10th time, in June in Rovinj during the salsa festival I met a girl from Austra, we’re together now and will visit Crikvenica during the weekend of 15th aug. If you have any Crikvenica recommendations I’m interested to hear about them. ☺️

walk around, from kačjak(great for taking a swim) to Selce (next place to Crikvenica) There is no specific thing you can do in Crikvenica, just walk, enjoy food, sunsets, explore. Would not recommend going to central beaches, lots of people, no so clear water. Try Lučica beach(10 min walk from center) or go to Kačjak( 10 min by car or catch a small train on weels that goes there from center every 1h or so) for a more island feel of swimming.

I spent the month of May in Split (and visited other islands and towns from there). It was perfect time of the year to visit. They consider it off season but it was perfect weather, less crowded and significantly cheaper. The only drawback was the sea temperature was a bit chilly. I am not convinced that pebbly/rocky beaches are better but luckily Split has both. I am glad Croatia is switching over to Euros…it makes it easier to compare to the dollar and easier to go from one country to the next without converting! Super safe country….and I was there 3 weeks before I even saw a policeman. I took Uber once in Dubrovnik and much cheaper than Uber in States! I walked everywhere in Split but busses were nice and ran on time.

Tipping in Croatia is not mandatory. I do not agree with Ivan that workers do not have high salaries so tipping helps them. It is up to the employer to give adequate salaries and not expect customers to fill his obligation. Things are changing and it is becoming normal that everyone expects a tip. There are some rude restaurants that print in BOLD letters "Tip is not included" on the bottom of the bill. Who says it has to be included? This happened to me at a fancy restaurant in Bol on Brač few weeks ago.

Great video! We just came back after staying for 2 months (n yes the best time being a little off season! 😉) my husband is from Ugljan so we spent most our time there at his house n a little at the ‘Stan’ in Zadar but even June was getting too crowded for our taste. One thing maybe to mention is ‘taxis’ … it’s better to call them first to pick you up (ask for their card) even though taxis might be waiting in a row in front of you… you get a better rate calling them first , otherwise they seem to pick n choose what they want to charge. N that’s real!!! And another lil hint is (I’m American and Italian) and my husband (who’s Croatian) says best not to speak English in the cab or they charge you more lol. So he sits in the front speaking Croatian being friendly n get a better rate! May not be practical for everyone but it helps!

Depends on your profession. Anywhere from 800-3000 eur. But prices of accomodation have really gone up recently. For example, lowest salary is less than 700 eur and 30m2 apartment in Zagreb (poorly decorated) is 350-400 eur + utilities. Of course if you are in lets say IT, you will be quite fine. There is universal healthcare that all people use for free (every employer pays it in the name of his employees). And take in account that food is also quite expensive (sometimes more than in Germany i.e.)

About greetings, you maybe kiss in Istria or around sea side, but I rarely very rarely saw people kissing in zagorje, and in Slavonija its even more rare. So I advise people going to Croatia to don't kiss people, they wouldn't like it and it wouldn't be appropriated, shake hands, better, and safer. About September, I disagree,it's maybe fine for sea side, but in many regions of Croatia its a very rainy month. Better pick middle October, you will have lovely colors of the fall at least. And not crazy stupid summer prices. About safety, I would say yes and no. For walking in the street, park, center of cities, alone or with kids, it's definately safe.if you forget your bag or credit card in a restaurant or a store, you can go back there, you can be sure they will keep it for you, I wouldn't worry about this. But... Hanging out after a football game of national team or dynamo Zagreb, then it isn't that safe. Driving in Slavonija is a real pain, and it's not so safe, you have to be extra careful. If you can, rent a Croatian car, it will avoid a lot of bad surprises that you can get having a western car registration. In the North, they took my European health card everywhere. In East, you have to be lucky that they accept it. So, it's safe in general, but i would definately not call it one of the safest place in the world. I am here for few years, I saw agressions, murders and lot of ugly things. It's hard to resume, I'd say it's safe but be aware of lot of things or places to avoid.

Another thing about safety, if you are gay, lesbian, unfortunately, you have to be extremely discreet here. You can easily get agressed or insulted. so so much misinformation in this video, especially regarding sea warmth and best months to visit. Sea in september will be too cold for most people, (not counting early september), october and May dont even bother, unless it is exceptionally warm spring season etc.

It is bad news that you are going to lose the sovereignty of your currency when you change to the Euro, you will not have a way to control inflation since you will depend on the economic decisions of the European Union, for example. Every time they decide to print money, inflation will rise, and the cost of living will also rise. It's unfortunate, I think it's a very bad idea to leave the Kuna behind.

Sarah, you speak Croatian like a native Croatian girl, so you can not say Croatian is hard to learn! 😀

She doesn't speak nearly at native level, but she speaks the best Croatian I have ever heard an adult foreginer learn.

Buu, Sheldonu jedan.
