Once again. The Steel Legion thanks you. This was massively helpful. I had gotten to the spraying mechanicus grey, and then going over in mechanicus grey paint, but then stalled like a deer in headlights. Was too terrified to get stuck in with the stripes. Will be doing that now after watching this video. Funnily enough, seeing you use the earthshade so liberally really put my mind at rest about how easy it was to use as long as you spread it out. Many thanks!

For the wash; always drag in the direction rainwater would flow down the vehicle. That way, if streaks remain when dried, it looks like a dirty vehicle that has had rain. Look at any vehicle in real life and you always see rain streaks.

FANTASTIC TUTORIAL. I was going bonkers trying the GW small detail brush Agrax Earthshade wash on each and every individual rivet!!!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio7 жыл бұрын
This isn't to say that the GW method won't work - and give you some very clean, sharp results - but who's got the time or energy to dot every single rivet with a small brush, right? ;D

Lifesaver my bro, just picked up my first leman russ for my Genestealer Cults and everyone keeps telling me oh use an airbrush...when I don’t have one -.- should be able to get mine smashed out in no time with this tutorial. Chur 👃🏽
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
Nuts to that! I've got an airbrush that barely ever sees use, since it's such a pain in the neck to set up, pack down and clean when I'm done. Just hammer out the brush and washes and you're good to go! Genestealer Cults are a great choice, by the by... even if I'm required by duty to put the flamer to them when the chance arises. ;)

Hi great vid, I'm new to the hobby and was given a Tamiya Russian tank as a gift to build, and was thinking how the hell can I paint the camo without a airbrush, can't have a airbrush as live in a small apartment and it just wouldn't work, so this vid is excellent for someone like me. Thanks

hello thank you for this tutorial.but which color i must take if my tank has the zandri dust as base color and i want green camouflage stripes on it ? must i still take agrax earthshade for washing or another wash and which drybrush colors i need for the green camo stripes ?

Very good Job, I'm absolutly fan ! Could you please give us the blue base color reference ? Thank you very much for sharing.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
There's actually not a blue on the model at all! It's all just the grey as demonstrated in the video: Start from Mechanicus Standard Grey, wash with Agrax Earthshade, then drybrush back up with Mechanicus and then an edge drybrush of Dawnstone.
@stefmassmemory45386 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your detailed answer, maybe my screen filter turn the mechanicus to blue... I'm really grateful to you.
@alanprihoda77725 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm new! Sometimes its base, drybrush, wash... sometimes its base, wash, drybrush? As I am not painting GW models I'm at a loss as to what order I need to use. I'm painting battlemechs for Battletech.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it's base, drybrush, wash and sometimes it's base, wash, drybrush... Correct! It depends on the finish you're looking to get. Sometimes a drybrush after the wash will help bring the brightness back to some edges and help your highlighting, whereas sometimes you can use a much brighter drybrush colour and then wash the whole lot to bring it together and tie the whole thing in. It varies from colour to colour and what kind of finish you're trying to achieve. Practice and having a play around with it is key!
@alanprihoda77725 жыл бұрын
I get it, when I got my first lessons I guess the group I learned from didn't want me to take the easy way and use washes. They we having me line the panel lines, block in the panels, edge highlight and dry brush. Then top it off with cockpit jewling. I do appreciate what they did for me!

Love the videos and they are a huge help as I return to 40k and painting! Was just wondering if there would be any problem in doing my primer base layer as the Citadel Spray Zandri Dust colour than just doing my camo-stripes in green over that? Will I have any big issues (getting too dark to drybrush or do highlights on) with doing a full dark wash over the Zandri dust base? Thanks again! Cheers from Canada
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
As it happens, I've actually painted a couple of desert-themed tanks in much the same way. Zandri Dust, Agrax Earthshade and then a heavy drybrush of Zandri Dust from the pot before a final drybrush of Tyrant Skull for the edges. Works a treat! If you're using a green pattern you'll probably find you can do both the basecoat and stripes, then wash them together. :D
@BlootusWealth6 жыл бұрын
Wow thanks so much for the quick and informative reply! Cleared up just about everything :) One more question, do you think it would come out too dark if I did my basecoat in a few coats of watered down Karak Stone over Zandri Dust? Main idea is a Warhawks Helldivers Cadian company. Again thanks for your time!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
You lucked out to have commented just as I was stumbling behind the keyboard to settle up on some of these comments! ;) If you're planning on using Karak Stone as a basecoat, I'd probably suggest starting from a spray of Corax White instead. You'll get better coverage and it'll look much smoother overall, I think - cover the whole tank in your Karak Stone, and it'll work pretty well as a basecoat then for all the green and such as well.

Wonderful. Thanks again my man, so glad I stumbled upon the channel and subbed!

Hi there, I've got greenhorn question... are the paint permanent? I notice when you give the camo a "wash" the camo paint don't come off? I'm thinking off starting my first tank kit and would like to learn more on camo painting them as suppose to just spraying.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
If you don't ask, you don't know! :D The paints are all permanent. After applying them, they'll take about 5-10 minutes to dry to the touch after which you can usually start painting over them safely, but they're 'cured' and permanent usually after a couple of hours.
@RedPilgrim.6 жыл бұрын
Sonic Sledgehammer Studio, Nice! any chances of seeing a video where you give recommended paints for tanks like example (tracks) uses certain colors (hull, ammo crates, metal handles, bolt & nut etc etc)? Atleast I would blindly burn my pocket :P Thanks!

Exactly the same as the other one, just without the Zandri Dust stripes. It's Mechanicus Standard Grey washed with Agrax Earthshade, drybrushed with the base again and then an edge drybrush of Dawnstone.

I stopped painting my models till I got myself an airbrush there not that expensive and really really is worth the investment i was only a hundred pound for mine and a spartex airbrush! That's nothing when to compare 1 of my models is 60 to 75 bucks each! My older kits are in the bottom drawer that were hand painted I can't put them on display haha! War hammer stuffs ok but couldn't do this to your ww1 ww2 tanks or armour vehicles!
