Sonic Sledgehammer Studio- if I remember the fluff after the fall of Cadia many guard groups were cut off from their supplies and home planets. New battalions were formed out if these “mixed groups” and trained together. So a squad here and there on the table would not be too out of place- and as an aside when your playing it becomes easy to mix up squads. A visual difference can help you keep them sorted out, differentiate a vet squad from normal troopers, conscripts from normal troops, etc.

I really like this. Another tip you can do to slightly adjust the snow based on the terrain is to wash through it when it's still drying. For instance, I have a Tau battlesuit on a broken roadway in some tundra. On the roadway I washed streaks through the snow with agrax earthshade to make it look slushy and salty. On the tundra I waited till it dried and washed it with thinned drakenhof nightshade to make it look frozen and hard packed.

Thank you! :) It helps knowing how things are going to look after a shade and when they're 'done' - those early stages look pretty bland by comparison. A bit of practice helps to envision how the finished product will look, and that can work in a big way for helping assemble the list of paints in your head as you're working.

I love this. going to use it. need to get that tech paint from 3rd party though. might get a few bottles so I never run out. ha ha. Have you thought about adpating this palette to doing camo on leman russ? I'm going to colour match as best I can for the blue on the fatigues then do a light grey camo bit. I could do the tanks light grey with a blue/grey camo bit, but I'm not sure which way round to go tbh. probably the former.

Love the scheme and as a brand new Guard collector this inspired me to actually open the boxes and get building. Only question is how you would do vehicles in the similar scheme. I sm guessing that you airbrush or spray Corax White, overall Agrax Earthshade wash, use leadbelcher and the like on details. It just seems like it would be boring. Any suggestions to add that "warmth" you love so much?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio5 жыл бұрын
Maybe some brown splotches or stripes for camo, or dark yellow somewhere like lenses or glass areas? It doesn't need to be a huge amount of colour to set off the miniature, and make the armour seem all the more cool and austere by comparison.

Great video, can I ask what you used to add the light sprinkle of snow on the US Infantryman?

It's all the same Valhallan Blizzard. :) It'll look a little wet when it goes on, but by carefully dabbing some little bits on the helmet, once it dries you get just the frosty flakes left behind. It can take some practice to get it looking right, but it's easy enough to wipe off with your thumb if it's not working!

I had exactly the same look until I added the agrax earthshade. It made my whole model look way too dim after that. I didnt use any more than you did in the tutorial, could it be that my pot of shade was a darker mix? if so what would you advise instead.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't think a single pot would be darker, but sometimes you'll end up with a darker finish with a surprisingly small difference in the amount that's been applied. It can also be a case of shaking it up more before you start with the painting.
@Mogsey19724 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, I decided on a different approach where I have undercoated with grey and will steadily build on the highlights with drybrushing grey to whiter shades etc. Then cleaning up with pale grey on the higher white of the armour and darker washes for the lower tones. I know it won't have as much contrast, but It will certainly have a nice wintry look to it.

I really love the look of this mini, mate. It kinda makes me want to start a small guard army to add to my inquisition, but i don't know if i should collect more minis because sometimes it feels like thats the only thing i have in my house :/ Have you ever felt something like that?

Thanks, I plan on doing Space Wolves soon and will implement some of these techniques in my painting. What is the difference between using Valhallah Blizzard VS making your own snow with glue and such (plenty of tutorials out there on making snow for miniatures)? Is it better to make your own or use Games Workshops' stuff here?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
Really it's down to what you like to use. I've got a couple pots of Valhallan Blizzard and I like how it dries hard and the few little bits of texture in there when it dries gives it a neat finish. If there's something else that works for you, there's no reason not to use that instead! It's honestly just a case of picking what works for me and that I have to hand.

The Nighthaunt Gloom really works best over 'soft' things - clothing and skin, for example. I'm not sure that it'd work perfectly over a Marine. You might find the shade straight over Corax White gives you something you like the look of for that dirty white appearance, though?

I’m painting some ultra marines in a snow environment, after I do the colours, following your vid, should I slap some of Valhalla white texture stuff on their armour?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
With Space Marines I'd be hesitant to put too much extra snow on the miniatures themselves, unless you're going for a force that's been in situ for a while. I tend to think of them as crashing into the enemy by drop pod or transport, fighting hard, then zipping out again - they aren't there long enough to get snowed on! Of course, your mileage may vary, so if you like how it looks, have a play around and see if it suits your Ultramarines on a test miniature first.
@jeneral-jeff84026 жыл бұрын
Sonic Sledgehammer Studio haha, thanks for the info and reply! I’d like to think that the marines aren’t there for a few hours but days. A big battle might last a long time against a formidable foe. Like chaos marines or 1000 sons. So, some snow would be there, I think anyway. For my Ultramarines I’ve picked up a few different paints and the dark imperium set. Are these paints okay to use or do I need more? - Chaos black spray primer - Macragge blue - Chronus blue - Abaddon black - Lead belcher - Mephistopheles red - Retribution armour - Nuln oil - Valhallan blizzard
