I have a paper Kill Zone 1 that someone mounted onto a piece of slate and glazed. I LOVE that presentation and love the Kill Zone series. I have always wanted to collect copies of the rest of the series. However being a bowhunter that has missed a kill by inches, this painting really speaks volumes! My story is this: I had been bowhunting for about 3 years at the oldest hunt club in Virginia, USA in the county of Charles City. Holdcroft Hunt Club is still together today (I would still be a member but I relocated to San Antonio Texas years ago...I miss it and my fellow hunt members so much!). Mr. Layfield is the owner of the 1000+ acre property and it is a multi generational tree farm along a tributary of the Chickahominy River named Morris Creek. I had sighted in my Parker Hunter Mag, my first bow, and was deadly out to 38 yards, and even had a first kill at that distance. At the time, I was scouting a BIG buck with some massive tree rubs. I knew he was big from his hoof prints and scrapes too. I could never get a sight of him, but could occasionally hear him nearby. I had the perfect tree to jack into with my tree climber stand, the perfect shooting lane up to 20 yards, and I knew it was just a matter of time. One breezy evening before my hunt, I checked my sights with a few shots in my backyard. I had a perfect range with a target about 20 yards away in a shed. I thought it was isolated from any latent breeze or wind, but found it was shooting off. Very weird I thought, but I will adjust; what a big mistake. The next morning I jacked up into my spot about 15 feet off the ground before daylight. The breeze was in my favor; everything felt PERFECT. As the sun rose, I could hear him in the thicket coming toward my shooting lane. With my heart pounding, I quietly got my body, bow, and mind into position. As he ever so carefully broke into my lane, he raised his snout and sniffed the environment for danger, then lowered his head to inspect the ground. There was my chance...I raised my bow, drew back, and settled my bead for his heart. I followed his movement as he crept forward and cleared all brush that would disrupt my arrow's flight path. All the while I fought the deer fever trying to overtake me...he was a MONSTER wall hanger with an estimated 24 inch width, 11 points, and massive beams. This guy was likely over 220 pounds. Breathe and hold. It was time to squeeze the trigger. I saw my arrow whiz just a few inches below his heart, graze his belly, and bury deep into the ground. He snorted, ran, and paused in the thick blanket Mother Nature provided. I could hear him snort more in disgust, then run off. When I retrieved my arrow, I found some fresh cut hair that my broadhead sliced from him. I never saw him again until gun season; one of my fellow members harvested him. He was beautiful but not mine. When I arrived home I check my sights and found that my bow was shooting low about the same amount that I had missed my mark...I should have left my sights alone the night before!! This painting really speaks to me!

Wow Eric!! That’s gotta haunt you...but we’ve all been there. I too have my stories on game situations that I’ll replay in my head till the day I die. Thanks for the story, it was very relatable. 👍🏼
