I planted mine today, nights in the low 50's in NH. I started them inside way too early so they're huge now and a little root bound. I put in my own worm castings and organic granular fertilizer that breaks down over a few months. I even put dried seaweed powder I made from beach seaweed-don't know if it'll do anything but it made me feel special, lol. I hear seaweed has growth hormones in it and tons of trace minerals, great for compost greens too.

I think gathering, drying and powdering beach seaweed was a great idea because I saw it done in a movie about a rugged island in Ireland that was mainly rock, very little soil. They gathered seaweed from the beach and amended their gardens with it .

Is you lay the leggy seedling on its side for several days, the tip will naturally grow toward the sun, curving upward, and you don't run the risk of snapping the stem while planting it sideways in a trench.

I used to do an egg too, but quit a few years back. Didn't feel like it was doing anything.

@@StoneyAcresGardening ya it is hard to say.

You need to ground the egg shells or they will still be whole next year. There is also a method using vinegar that makes it so the plants can use the calcium now.

@@anncoombs6787 Thanks. I will look up the vinegar idea. I use 3 bantam eggs under each tomato and break them before I plant the tomato on top of them. After turning the bed I have not found any egg shells. I thought this was weird because no animal dug them up. I have done this for 2 yrs but have to say I think sardines work the best. I feel that the best tomato food is fish heads, tails, etc..if you cannot get those use sardines. A Sardine (Sardines canned in water only) under each tomato seems to do my tomatoes well. This yr I am going to do the sardines again with a banana peel and a bantam egg!. Cheers!

Haha, you said burying a banana peel will make your bananas taste sweeter. Slip of the tongue 😆. Interesting, I may have to remember this video for next year as I’m already planted. I’ll be eating a lot of bananas 🍌 next spring as I plant around 40- 60 tomato plants each year….. I may turn into a monkey 🐒 Thanks for tips, didn’t know about the deeper planting or the sideways.

I put 3 or 4 generic tums from $tree in the hole, helps prevent blossom end rot. Gonna try also adding the banana peel. Got a late start this year, gonna plant out my tomatoes today! Thanks for the tip.
