The fun for me is saving seeds from my store bought tomatoes. I found a thin wiry tomato plant growing out of an abandoned pot in the middle of winter. Brought it in and lo and behold it gave me lots of cherry tomatoes😊 I was hooked & one day, just for fun, I started placing the seeds in an occupied pot & was surprised when the plants grew😂. Now, usually after finishing up my sandwich, I find a couple seeds leftover on my plate. When they grew I transplanted the plants into their separate pots. I now have 3 (12") plants & about a dozen other seedlings popping up. Should be fun to see if they are Campari, Plum, Cherry, ROMA, or Beef Steak.😃

Thanks for the advice about cutting the top when it gets as high as you want it to grow! I've been growing mine in those tubs you get from Walmart for 6-7 $. It works great! I just drill holes in the bottom and a few on the sides. And the tub sits on the lid that came with it! I have 26 tomato plants growing right now! 😂 Every year, I tell myself I'm only going to plant a few... but I just get carried away! 🙄 Can't help it, I love growing tomatoes! Gonna have lots of canning to do again this year! 💞 Blessings and Much thanks my brother! ❤

I prune once a week on vigorous growers, they can get away from you if you don't. I water every other day in the height of summer if its needed. if its not too hot I just water when the soil is dry down to three inches or so. Usually the rain is enough until high summer.

As a container gardener tomatoes are great to grow, but have issues that you need to be aware of. You are right Scott, 5 gallons is the smallest pot you should use, I much prefer 7 gallon pots. If using 5 gallon pots you will have to really keep up on fertilizing. You will also have watering issues in a 5 gallon pot unless you are using a sip (hint hint) or can water twice a day, especially grow bags. Because of the watering issues you are more likely to get split/cracked fruit. Better than rocks is paper. I use old brown paper from grocery bags in non sips. It allows drainage, but keeps the water in the pot a little longer. As a side benefit it keeps the soil in the pot. As you said Scott you have to use potting mix. I have yet to find a mix that has enough calcium on its own to prevent blossom end rot. There are good fertilizers that provide it. But a cheap homemade calcium fix is a cup and a half of garden lime in a 5 gallon bucket , cover it with vinegar and let it bubble, when its done fill the bucket with water and mix it up. Each plant gets 2 cups of the solution. I usually do it and then reapply in a week. I dont even wait now to see the end rot start. But it will remove it from future tomatoes once applied.
@jeanettehaygood4154

@j.b.6855
@j.b.6855 5 ай бұрын
@@jeanettehaygood4154 Usually only twice, the first time is when I see the first tomato, then a week later. Further applications wont hurt, but likely wont be needed. Whats nice is if you do see blossom end rot, this wont help whats already bad, but will stop it from ruining what the plant produces from that point forward.

I am so glad you posted this, timing is great for me. I purchased covers for raised beds that said they were good down to 28, but last night it got down to 32 and entire garden died. All my San Marzanos, cucumbers, squash, peppers, watermelon, everything is dead. After I stopped crying, I wondered what to do. Well, I am going to try some San Marzanos and Black Cherry tomatoes in pots. I have 15 gallon bags and fortunately a few starts left in the greenhouse and also purchased a few news ones from the nursery. My dear husband is also getting a pallet of the same potting mix you have so I will have plenty. But sadly no Jersey Devil tomatoes or others that needed to start in Feb-Mar. I am also going to try cucumbers and maybe squash. The raised beds will just have leeks, beets and other cold-tolerate plants. Wish me luck, we are in Spokane Valley Zone 6 and are facing another few days of extreme cold at night so at least with pots, I can bring them into the garage at night.

Ah, I am in zone 8b, Clark County, Washington, western side of the mountains. If you are new to gardening, or new to eastern Washington, you need to talk to old timers. If you got 32 at night, freezing, do NOT put your tomatoes out yet! It is too soon for you. In fact, typically the time to put out most veggies even in my zone in our state is not until April 15, but on rare years we can get snow as late as early May (1990). Tomatoes and melons and peppers are all things that need heat, and cannot handle the low 30s at night. At this time, if that is your weather, stick to the radish and cabbage a few more weeks. Soil should warm up more, maybe around May 15th, then plant them. I remember twenty years ago at a feed store I saw peppers and tomatoes in pots in late April and some woman from California said she put a row of bell pepper seeds into her dirt. 😂I told her she just wasted her money and time, this is not how things grow up here.

@@davidthedeaf LOL!! I am from California also but knew enough not to put seeds in like that. What I wanted was a freeze protection cover because of the low temperatures at night but the item did not perform as advertised, not going to do that again. I did put in leeks and today will put in some beets as they claim to be able to withstand cold. But the tomatoes, peppers and other veggies are in grow bags and brought into the warmer garage at night. Looking forward to May 15th.

Hi, my name is Bruce I live up in Ontario Canada. Not that that makes a difference for my question. I planted 2 different kinds of Tomatoes in the house under a light, (one plant for a 4" pot) the light was a little high, plants were spindly, found out that the lights need to be lower. Rooted the plants up a bit and planted them deep to increase the roots and prevented them from falling over, Wow! These plants took off and most grew to 8 or 9". All of a sudden they all completely stopped growing I mean stopped! (Side note: they were not all that tall in case one thinks maybe they outgrew their pots).The leaves were turning over, curling up and the bottoms of the leaves were turning red. Over the course of 2 to 3 weeks I lost some small ones but the large ones did not die. Finally after about 3 weeks I noticed a few little new growths happening in the crotch between two branches. Then I got brave and cut all the dormant leaves off because even though the were not growing they were still using nutrients. Now you are up to the present and the new little growths are turning into branches. The question, 2 part: What on earth happened and am I wasting my time with these? Now, you must know that I started the seed in 4" used pots and I used 1 year old garden soil that was in my garage that my wife uses in here flower gardens. Thx Bruce

Hi😃 a quick general question.... I am using my garden soil that last year my tomatoes had some blossom end rot. I used tums then and all went great. Could I used tums as a preventative measure and add them to my young tomato plants early on? Thank you.
@ScottHead
@ScottHead 4 ай бұрын
You could but the issue is inconsistent watering that makes calcium difficult for the plant to take in. Just be sure to water ver regularly.

My hybrid beefsteak tomatoe has curling leaves, what do I do to save it? I live I’m 9b area and it is in a 10 gallon pot. Do I still leave it in the hot sun all day?
@ScottHead
@ScottHead 5 ай бұрын
Some tomatoes curl just as a normal matter of course. If it looks stressed its not the sun exposure, but it could be watering issues. Under-watering or over-watering. Stick a finger in the soil or dig down 3-4 inches, if it is bone dry, give it some water. If there is any trace of moisture, leave it alone.

I have a question regarding tomato cages in hot weather. I am growing them on my balcony, the cage gets really hot, will the plant suffer any form of burn from a heated cage? Or do I change to one that is not made of metal?

The question I have is my tomato plant has black on the outer edges of the leaves. Do you happen to know the cause and if possible correction process.

Sorry, diagnosing stuff like this is difficult without seeing the plant and knowing the growing circumstances is almost impossible. There is a good book called “what’s wrong with my plant” that is helpful.

Any experience or thoughts on neem oil for pest control and tomato plants?

I typically don't use Neem on tomatoes, but if the pest is effectively controlled by Neem go for it.

I know what you mean, I have experienced that myself. And I don't know either although I have seen yesterday on a video that the lack of calcium in the soil I believe it was or some of the mineral I forgot which one it was., but with this information you make it do some research and find out for sure and the inconsistency of water distribution I'll keep that in mind also good luck❤

Just consistent care as you normally would and time. If you have done everything reasonably well so far the plants should perk up pretty soon.
