For people who don't have time or who can't prune your raspberries or fertilize them, they will still grow. Don't not plant raspberries just because you don't have time to maintain them! I never fertilized or pruned mine, and I had a massive production every year so don't be discouraged if you can't maintain them.

Black berries grow wild here. All by themselves, every single year. I absolutely love this comment. We can sometimes compare ourselves to others and think because we can't be or do things just like them, we should just not do it. (I'm absolutely not saying that there's anything wrong with pruning them). 💜💜

There are wild blackberry plants growing along the woods on my property that have been there since before I moved in a long time ago. The birds and wild life usually get them before I do. I guess the only reason to trim them is for the people who don’t like the wild look.

Greetings from northeastern California! I am an arborist. My sister sent me this link and I enjoyed this video. I am going to paste in my reply, some basic observations from a tree man. "YEP I enjoyed this video. •Her Felco pruners are a good choice. Good quality •She seems SO organized •I like her 4x4 posts with caps on them. Attractive & sturdy •She pays attention to nodes. I do too •I like her energy distribution methods. I can relate to that •The gravel walkways look nice. But I was waiting to see cleanup on that. But she's got it down. •HUGE compost pile! I wonder if she ever chips any of that? •She's organized and speaks well. A good, sensible presentation. •Thank you for this video. I have shared it with my landlady Theresa. She loves gardening. Her T-shirt says she's a "Crazy Plant Lady". And she is so sweet." So, I just want to say I like your work. Oh -- in our area the deer make everything difficult. I heard a reference to a distant fence. Do you have a video on wildlife management where your garden is concerned? Thanks & Blessings, Michael. 🌲

I watch these every year and pick up a new tip. I also use these as a reminder of garden chores in my own garden. Too cold here right now but in 2 weeks it will be time. I ended up putting a wood trellis behind my grapes because the wires just weren’t enough support. Maybe move the blueberries were closer to the raspberries, have them all in one place.

I guess I need to ask the birds what variety they planted. 😂 The birds planted several varieties of wild red raspberries in one of my fenced gardens. Each year I would hack them back. One year I got too busy and they had berries. I decided to take care of them afterwards. Two years later I made a garden for them. Two years after that I determined some were not good so I focused on propagating from just one red raspberry plant. All others were pulled (crap raspberries & blackberries) I now have 2 rows of red raspberries that are wonderful! Last year I fertilized them for the first time with aged horse manure. Wow! What a difference! I also noticed that they had primocanes and floricanes. I removed the floricanes after the berries were done. Oddly, the ends of the primocanes had a few blossoms just before winter. My volunteer variety is probably a hybrid, but mostly June bearing, I guess. Flavor is intense. This year the canes are super long and wide, with loads of shoots. They have outgrown their rows so I will need to improve the fencing for them, similar to how you will fix your blackberry fence. Note that I tried twice to grow red raspberries many years ago. I could not keep those nursery varieties alive. This volunteer unique variety is perfectly adapted to my environment and thrives.😀 I did a similar feat with volunteer black raspberries. I started with one bird-seeded plant. I propogated doing tip rooting and planting seeds from the mother plant. I now have about 60 plants with harvests so large that I can make sauce, jam, and wine. And there will still be more left. Oddly enough, the birds do not eat them. Which is weird because the birds planted the original.😵‍💫 Before mine were plentiful enough for use, other than eating out of hand, I picked some at a u-pick. Sticker shock! And theirs were not even as good as mine. Within my seedlings I got a hybrid red raspberry x black raspberry plant that has purple berries. Very unique taste! My wife doesn't like them, but I do. Happy gardening!

20 years of trying to get the blackberries in control/ the worse time was while I waited for hip surgery(my neighbours hated me) Now this year one year of retirement and those thorns I have felt through my shoes, gloves, pants, they have even taken my hat off for me many times while pruning. It's like the plant is alive and trying to poke me so I'll stop cutting/. I have never had the need to fertilize. I'm almost done taking down the mass now it's time to dig up some and stake the rest. Cheers/ I can't do it daily but you are my inspiration and I love your gorges thick hair girl to girl

@@seanaames6855 It’s so frustrating. They need to find a way to eradicate them without hurting the other native bugs. We didn’t have them here in KS, 10 years ago at least at my old house never saw them before a few years ago.

Japanese Beetles start out as grubs in your grass. Eliminate the grubs and you disrupt their life cycle. I fought Japanese Beetles on my 24 rose bushes when I lived in AL. The darn bugs love roses too. On the rose bushes I could use a systemic to kill them off but of course you cannot use that on a food crop. Your best bet is to treat the grass and cut down their numbers each year. I hope this helps. Happy Gardening this year!

@@cynthiafisher9907 I noticed when I order plants from north and south west coast states, they have to do an agricultural test with anything coming in or out of certain states Oregon especially. Even though I’m sure it’s a pain for selling in general. I definitely see a benefit for keeping horrible pests like the spotted lantern fly and Japanese beetles from being spread. I talked with our local greenhouse about them being all over their plants too. He said the soccer and football fields by them are never treated for grubs. Which is understandable, it’s expensive to treat large portions of land. We have a school by our neighborhood and we could treat all our lawns but they will still find their way to our beautiful gardens.

I cut mine down to the ground last year because I need to get a staking system in, I was using big tomato cages but now that my plants are bigger and starting to spread, they have outgrown them. I'm thinking of doing something similar to yours but I need to be able to accommodate the curves in my bed. I made a kidney shaped bed, drove 12 inch metal edging into the ground to stop them from taking over and planted two, one heritage and one fall gold, honestly wouldn't mind getting rid of the heritage and getting another gold, like you, I love them so much more haha. They are so sweet and just melt in your mouth, when I gave a couple to my neighbor she was super surprised and loved them too. If I had a good spot, I would make a second bed just for the fall gold.

Super interesting! I bought a container raspberry plant last year but I’m unsure of its growth cycle. It must have been at least two years old because there were some raspberries on the plant when I purchased it. The card instructions said not to prune at all but my better instincts told me to go in on a sunny day mid winter and pull off anything that wanted to come off with just my hands and fertilize. Now the canes are nice and tidy. I’m excited to see if it will produce again this year!

Have you ever used a leaf vacuum type of leaf blower? They're awesome for sucking up leaves in flower beds!🙂🍂

Hello Laura. Would you happen to have a video on how you built the raspberry beds with a material list?

Ok seriously I just put some blackberries in last year and had no idea what to do with them. I’ll definitely feed them but I think I’ll let the stems fall over and stick the ends in the ground to produce more plants. I have the berries growing up on stock panels and can tie them up pretty well.

You will get more plants in no time. They do that on their own by sending out shoots.

Have you ever considered planting the exact same thing (raspberries or other crop), side by side with the same conditions and testing out how much using garden tone helps production? I have noticed a change when I use Garden Tone, but when telling others about how much it helps I find I often have no reference beyond my word/personal experience. It might be a fun experiment.

Wow! Thank you so much for sourcing the kneeling pad and offering it to us for purchase. The size will be great, helping to save my knees, ankles, butt, etc. Well done!

I was advised to prune my first year blackberry canes once they reach 4-5 feet to size control them and encourage branching/more fruit production. Have you heard of this method before? It’s definitely an extra chore mid-season and I’m not sure if there are disadvantages to pruning them at that time of the season.

My wife absolutely LOVES your videos and has used tons of your tips for our gardens, flowers, fruit tree's, etc. Im a Ford Lariat guy, who loves his John Deer diesel tractor and all the attachments, as well as being a musician that loves to use the Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro (That Aaron recommended), on my Apple Mac M2 Studio. So how about an "Aaron Answer" show once in a while? lol.. What guy doesn't love to see info on tractors, fords, or just nerdy PC programs.. I could use some help figuring out these programs. Just a thought.. Thanks

Laura, can you recommend any variety of berries that can grow in a ‘wild’ setting on land around our lakehouse - without much care? We aren’t at the property often enough to fiddle with them but would love the treat for us and our rental guests.

Saw your face all over the Northwest Flower & Garden Festival in Seattle, Washington on another KZbin channel. They have life size cutouts of you girl! You need to hop up there and check it out. ❤ I hope you’ll show the installation of the wiring in the blackberry beds, I need to add some more to mine. I love your videos cause it reminds me what I need to be doing! ✔️ Love your stories too 🤗 👋

It amazes me that you can rake over your gravel and it stays in place! If one had a single bush, would a support like a cage of sorts on the bottom be a good idea? Right now mine is just splayed out taking up lots of room.

Congratulations Laura, Aaron, Benjamin and Samantha Grace. So proud of all your “hard” work. It sure has paid you back immensely. Not only financially but how we all love watching Garden Answer and respecting your information. Wish I could go to Andrews and meet “all” your family. God Bless you forever.
