Two Saturday morning videos in a row! Thank you. What a treat to wake up to. Last year I planted two blueberry bushes in containers and although they were small to start, I have high hopes for greater yields this summer. Your videos always make the process clear and they are great reminders of the things I need to put on my gardening TO-DO list.

ahhh, yes, pruning mine is on my list for this week.. great instructions and explanation 🙂 i only have 2 bushes; it's risky here in my warm climate (zone 10b) but i have had good luck with them... last year was phenomenal, i think because we had a cooler winter... i get enough for me and some to freeze usually, plus i share them with Herr Grossbeak (one of my favorite wild birds, he visits me especially during blueberry season, lol)... there is nothing more satisfying than picking fruit from your own garden (well yeah, veggies, flowers, etc, too, ha)... maybe i'm going about it wrong, but i find pruning just satisfying and somewhat relaxing, lol... no stress for me; i enjoy it - i feel like i'm helping my plants do their best to give us both what we want! 🙂love seeing Benjamin learning 'at the knee' and helping you plant (did he wash most of those seeds out with the hose?? lol) ... and boys and sticks, lol... 🙂 ❤ thanks for the video!! 🙂 ❤

Thanks for showing this!! It seems like pruning the blueberries follows similar rules for pruning as my crepe myrtle, or multi trunk lilac. Snipping “suckers”, competing branches, and taking a little “off the top”!?! I so appreciate you and all the things you think to share with us. I have always been interested in gardening, but never knew what I was doing. So I consistently was getting inconsistent results with my projects. I came across your channel about a year and a half ago when I was looking for help with my hostas. I have learned so much from your videos. Your hair looks amazing in that light when you were pruning giving off major summer vibes! My grandparents had blueberries lined up along their fence and it was a beautiful lush green hillly front yard I loved it we’d roll down the hill, picking blueberries for snacking or filling up yogurt containers for my grandma and grandpa(they always had yogurt containers for storing food always recycling 👍)☺️ I’ve always wanted blueberry bushes like that for my kiddos. And knowing I can pop them in some pots is hopeful for the coming season I’ll keep my eye out for some more berries bushes! We’ve had about 5 years experience with outdoor gardening but were a traveling family we move because of work every few years and only have done raised beds, a few front yard annuals and a few shrubs and bulbs. So investing in perennials hasn’t been something I’ve considered because it’s not a permanent home and we wouldn’t be there to reap the benefits. But recently I’ve learned planting perennials only make the world prettier so we’ll be planting away this new house even though we won’t be here permanently to enjoy everything we plant but maybe the next family that moves in will find joy in the blooms like we do 🤞❤️🥰

Our property came with 6 high bush blueberries - two different varieties. I feel validated with your video! I pruned mine a couple days ago - I just felt it was time. We think ours haven’t been tended to for 3 years, possibly quite a bit longer. Last year, our first, we just put some berry tone on the soil and hoped for the best. They grew to just shy of 7’ tall and we had so many berries!! I knew they had to be pruned this year or else we’d have no chance of being able to pick the new growth. It was really tough pruning off some of the berry buds! I was so worried I was going to prune them wrong, but 1 bush in I kept hearing your voice telling me “just try it and see what happens, there’s no rules.” Thank you for your words of encouragement and letting us know we really can’t make catastrophic mistakes.

One of my relatives in New Brunswick is a blueberry farmer. I’m also a beekeeper just for a hobby. Many beekeepers from Ontario will transport bee hives to New Brunswick to do pollination for the season. As many people know pollination can boost fruit yields up to 4 times so the blueberry farmers feel it’s worth the cost.

It's interesting about the theory of blueberry pruning. I wonder if that is specific to certain types of blueberries? The reason I ask is that growing up, we had basically a field of half wild blueberry bushes. This was on our farm in NW Florida so I think they'd be highbush, but possibly rabbiteye, blueberries and they were approximately 5 feet or so tall. I feel like they started from just a few bushes planted before I was born, but then they basically spread themselves around this 40 acre field they were in after we weren't using it for crops, whereas earlier it was one of the fields we used for various things like cotton and sugar cane. Anyway, we certainly never pruned them but they kept producing. Because the field was half wild with weeds, tall grasses, etc. That he would just bush hog around once or so a year, and this was rural Florida with a lot of venomous snakes, Daddy would drive the truck in with us in the back, drive up close to the bushes, and we would just pick the blueberries without getting out of the truck bed, lol, then he would drive on to the next bushes. 😀. They sure were delicious and I miss picking all the various kinds of fruit we had...well, actually I miss eating it more. 😀 Anyway, I am sure the blueberries would have been in heaven if we'd fertilized and pruned, but they always had heavy and delicious yields so I guess they were able to thrive on their own because they were in a situation they liked which us a good tip if you are looking for less maintenance. Plant what will thrive in the climate and situation you have, then they can more or less take care of themselves and you have more time for a few special things.

If you have deer they probably did the pruning for you. At my parents house we have a bunch of wild blueberry bushes in a swampy area. We never pruned them either. They were 4-5 feet tall and wide. They are at least 4O years old and still producing.
@Gigi-fv9ky2 жыл бұрын
@@amysgardenstead2879 it's funny, but in the country deer are not nearly as bad a problem as they are in urban areas. It actually does make sense in that 1) they simply have more habitat and natural food sources, 2) they have more natural predators, and 3) hunters also kept population in check. The deer never bothered the blueberries or any of the crops we grew on hundreds of acres, nor did they bother any of our other plants. You rarely ever saw a deer because they also retained their natural fear if humans. But, now I live in the suburbs in western Washington and deer here are are a huge problem. So many people have moved here so rapidly that their habitat loss has been staggering but they didn't have the chance to move. Their predators have been nearly eliminated, and there's no hunting in the burbs, so they are forced to feast on any garden that isn't protected by strong 8 foot fences, which I can't afford. Sprays don't work here and I have tried them all. They also are so used to humans, that they don't scare off easily even if you are out there yelling at them. So, it's been extremely disheartening trying to garden here because, with a few exceptions, the deer destroy even plants that are supposed to be deer resistant. So the deer didn't prune the blueberries on the farm, but they sure do kill a lot of things where I live now and vegetables, among most other things, are nearly impossible for me to keep from the deer. One day I hope to have fencing or move back to the country. 😀

I live in NW Florida and just wrote an article about blueberries in our area. Did you know we have some of the best blueberries in the country? We can also harvest from May through July. This was such good information about blueberries! I got 2 top hat seedlings by mail 2 weeks ago. They were doing excellent at first but the instructions said to keep them in the shade. They are now having browning leaves and some leaves died and dropped off. I see yours are in full sun so think I'll do that too. Oooh! So happy to see videos posted today! I made a quick run to a hardware store today, and I saw beautiful Lenten Roses! Okay. I didn’t just see them. I went home with one.☺️ I started pruning, but rain stopped that.

This is the kind of video I needed today, my blueberry plants need work done around them and to be fertilized/ fix the acidity. I struggle with this, I got my 1st blueberry last season and I’ve had my plant for almost 2 years and it has not grown much either. I have a new variety that I hope does well in my zone 9. Perfect timing for this video, I’m enjoying these Saturday videos 💜

Mint in the ground??? That scares me 😱 haha. I keep mine in containers because if not contained it tends to try to take over everything. Hope that isn’t an issue for you in your area. I love that you’re adding in some edible landscape out on the new property. I’m so excited to see the orchard meadow take shape this spring and all the other areas you are developing. So exciting 🥰!! I’m in the process of relocating and can’t take any of my plants with me. There is some fun in starting over, but this year will be limited. Living vicariously through your beautiful space. Thank you 🙏

It should scare you, lol, at least if you are in a climate similar to me. I knew better, but about 20 years ago I planted a single mint in what was an area nothing else would live in, dry and hot with reflected heat from the driveway. That mint is a beast and spreads like wildfire by a zillion underground roots. I kick myself so much for planting it in the ground. 😀😀😀 now, I would not even plant mint in a container unless the container was sitting on concrete.

Mountain mint is in the mint family, but isn’t aggressive like true mint is. It’ll still spread, but it’s controllable. True mint (Mentha) should NEVER be planted in the ground.

Wild bergamot is just about as bad. It spreads everywhere, it's tall and crowds out everything else. I finally got rid of it but it wasn't easy. zone 4, too.

@@karinchristensen220 Yep, it’s also in the mint family.
@Gigi-fv9ky2 жыл бұрын
@@GardenKath lol, I just Googled it and came back to add that it wasn't a mentha and wouldn't be as bad. Thanks for also sharing that!

Actually, it would have been 7 days because of your sit down together videos in recap ... Also, I learnt very recently, possibly this week from a fellow Australian commenter that we actually get your videos 10pm the night before, I'm usually asleep although I must admit if I can't sleep I have noticed your video, sometimes I may have watched but also I may have wanted to save the video for the morning x🧡💛🧡👏😁🇦🇺

I have always looked forward to pruning and shaping season every year. Gives an enormous feeling of accomplishment. I read the most amazing book many years ago called... The Royal Horticultural Society, Pruning and training by Christopher Bickell and David Joyce. I found it to be the most valuable book I have ever read besides of course The King James Version of the Holy Bible scriptures. Fortunately I have obeyed the directive of Jesus the Christ to be born again of water and of the spirit, so the Holy Bible is an open and understandable book to me x🧡💛🧡😁🇦🇺

I'm in the sourthern hemisphere, so the Northern Highbush grows best in the south, and the Southern Highbush grows best in the north. Rabbit Eye varieties are the recommended ones for my area by my favorite garden centre, so I have a couple of them which are currently fruiting. Will have to look back on this video when it gets into winter.

Thank you, once again. Great info and thorough info. Love to see Benjamin help you

Many of the seeds that you are planting can be invasive in my area, like the mint, so I must grow in pots. How will you be using this. Sowing directly in your garden or will you keep some of these in containers? I always learn so much even if I’ve seen you plant seeds before the information that you give really is appreciated by us all.

I want some blueberry bushes! I live in berry country. There are farms all over the place and we usually ride up the street to our Great Grandma's house to raid her bushes. I'm hoping to put some of my own in the yard this year. Thanks for the pruning tips. Very helpful!

Thank you for the extra video:) I do have blueberry bushes in the ground. They are fun, but maybe even more for the birds. I also let wild strawberry serve as ground cover. Berry palooza here in the summer.
