A few take-aways: 1. Plugging a pedalboard worth a midsized car into a cheap-ass micro cube is dope 2. The drop, while being possibly the most budget pedal on your board, stayed with you for years. 3. Video Production is topshelf as always 👌

The Automatone has me in a bit of a quandry. From a live perspective the advantage it offers is that you could conceivably set-up a whole range of boosts, ODs, Fuzzes and EQ's within the one unit. The only thing though, is to randomly access those settings quickly live, the way you can stepping on individual pedals, you need midi otherwise you're stuck scrollling/cycling. When you add a midi controller of course you're looking at more expense and more board real estate. As a studio tool it would also offer amazing flexibility with access to all those EQ/Clipping options on the desktop with sliders at your fingertips. In the studio though, I tend to use amps as my drive tones and you typically have a lot of great EQ options in either plugs or actual desk/hardware outboard on hand.
@JohnsDough19184 жыл бұрын
Very true. Personally, I wouldn't consider it if I wasn't already using an Empress Zoia with a midi controller. I'd end up just replacing my gain and EQ pedals with the mk II, and downsize to a smaller board in the process.
@matthewizen4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's totally fair. I do think people sometimes get tripped up with the number of options and may forget about how it's actually going to be used. Obviously everybody has different need out of a drive pedal, so this is just an example of how I use it: I don't ever use more than three drive sounds in any given sound. Clean on the edge of breakup from the amp as well as medium and higher gain sounds from the Automatone. The Automatone is soooo incredibly pick sensitive that those sounds give me such a huge range of drive sounds depending on setting and pick attack. So if you just use a couple/few settings for any given song, I think it works great. Especially with the banks/jump options. Taking advantage of those gets me 6 different sets of drive sounds: Bank 1a: Preset 0, Preset 1 (Jump to 0) Bank 1b: Preset 5, Preset 6 (Jump to 5) Bank 2a: Preset 0, Preset 1 (Jump to 0) and so on... Does that make sense? Having three drive options per song (amp and two drives from Automatone) is plenty for the music I play. Having six different options for any given song is even better. So even if I'm using "only" 12 out of 30 available drive sounds in a live-type scenario, I still feel like I'm getting a lot of use out of the pedal. Again, that's just how I use it. Add that to it being an *incredible* studio tool, like you said, I feel like it was a great, though admittedly *very* expensive investment.
@Grant_Ferstat4 жыл бұрын
@@JohnsDough1918 For sure. For someone already using MIDI it makes total sense.
@Grant_Ferstat4 жыл бұрын
@@matthewizen So typically I run a Timmy as a chime/crunch (think Tom Pettyish) sort of rhythm sound, another OD set as a more fat crunch and, I'll post boost either of those with a clean boost for solos depending on the song. The clean boost also gets used on its own for clean solos or parts I want to get to jump a little. There are of course shades of all of these with guitar volume adjustment, pick or no pick etc. Obviously with the Automatone you could simply save two versions of each OD tone with different volume levels to do the OD+Boost thing I'm doing, and have a separate clean boost setting too. I'm not quite sure I get though how uyou could go straight from one present to another without midi. From what you're saying you can jump to a present per bank but wouldn't I still have to cycle through potentially three sounds to get to the one I want?
@matthewizen4 жыл бұрын
Grant Ferstat Yeah. Jumping between more than a couple sounds means cycling through. Without MIDI, your set up is more versatile because you have independent control over three(?) different pedals. If you have three sounds set up on the Automatone (say chime, crunch, and lead on presets 0, 1, and 2...and you have 2 set to Jump to 0), you’d have to double tap the preset switch to go from chime to lead, crunch to chime, or lead to crunch. Does that make sense? To be fair, I don’t know of many overdrive pedals (save having multiple like you do) that allow immediate access to more than two or three sounds (thinking of Brothers and Sunset but I still think your set up is more versatile because you have independent control over three separate sounds). To your original comment, it’s definitely a quandary. So many factors make it that way: 1. it’s the best sounding drive pedal over ever played/heard 2. it’s expensive 3. it’s capable of doing so much more than other drive pedals 4. taking advantage of all of those capabilities takes midi... Thinking about it... another option would be to use an expression pedal. That way you get two sounds out of each preset. Just a thought. I’m definitely not here to convince you one way or another. Just hopefully answering questions and offering useful information. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Have a great day!

Loving the Pre amp Mk2! It’s already nudged a few of my older pedals off the board. Not just because it’s massive, but because it covers so much of the same ground. Living Room Gear Demos I really didn’t mean any offence... just saying that with so many pedals a loop switcher of some kind is a really good idea so that your signal isn’t going through all the pedals all the time. With so many pedals you’re either getting some level of signal degradation or if some or all of those pedals have always-on buffers they will be affecting the tone and performance of other pedals after them in the chain... or possibly a combination of both of those things. That’s the same whether you’re playing a Squier or a Suhr. Good pedalboard practise is good pedalboard practise.
