Like you alluded to, it’s always tempting to think that you left significant time on the table when you actually execute a negative split, and maybe that was the case with this race. But I think it’s worth emphasizing that planning a realistic negative split is NOT a conservative strategy, it is virtually always the BEST way to get the most out of yourself-by allowing your body to properly ease into the effort, by giving yourself time to discover what you really have to give on a particular day, by saving harder efforts for later in the race (when you won’t really be paying for the effort until after you’ve crossed the finish line). And perhaps counterintuitively, a well-executed, realistic negative split will feel easier (and often FAR easier) than the alternative while allowing you to run a faster time. Obviously Chicago is your race to run and I’m excited to see how you do, but (at the risk of sounding a little preachy) I hope you’ll avoid the temptation to be more “aggressive” by trying to pace it evenly. With a negative split you may wonder how much more you had to give, but with an even or positive split you will know for sure that you underperformed AND you will have made it harder on yourself. But regardless, great job and thank you for sharing your journey and dedication!

I have this weird preference when talking about half marathon times, that below 1-hour 10-minutes I'll say "68:53", but if it's above I just say "1:11:25". Maybe it's because if you say it as "sixty...something minutes", you emphasize on how fast it is. Anyway, I don't think this makes sense at all but I still do it haha
