If you've ever wondered what I look for in a book and what my star ratings mean, I break all that down in this video. Second video in a two part series about why and how I rate books. Check out the first video about why I don't do negative reviews here: • Do I Have Problem With...

Hahah this was great. There certainly is an aspect of ‘the books I want on my shelf’. I, too rate mostly on my enjoyment when reading rather than the technical critique or language. I love finding the ‘theme’ in books and am more easy to forgive plot holes if there’s a good message or if I feel it may provide a bit of an eye-opening experience and expand people’s empathy.

I'm the same way with plot holes! Yeah, I tend not to notice the writing for the most part unless the author does something really good or really bad. I think there's room for critical thought, but it's not at the forefront of my mind whe I'm reading ( though I can get really critical if I do notice something).

Hey Margret, I just came from Nichis Booktuber Mash Up video and I find it such an interesting topic about objective reviewing. You're right, no one can be 100% removed and be objective, that's not how art works. We can try to be objective but we are always stating our own opinion and finding people with similar tastes to you. Also, everyone does ratings differently, the stars mean different things for different people.

Exactly! I think it's great when people have a rubric or whatever, but I prefer to go on feeling because in the end how the book makes you feel is what counts.

This was so interesting! I try to balance my reviews half-and-half as far as personal enjoyment and objective (as much as possible) merit, and I just try to be very clear about which parts of my review are which. also I really liked the concise way you described writing upsetting or bad content for a purpose--that's a distinction that's really important to me too. (also yeah the realism argument in fantasy? dragons are fine but we DRAW THE LINE at women voting or not being constantly harassed or something 🙄)

I think it's a valuable thing to try to separate yourself from the material and judge with as little bias as possible, but I am not good at it. And yeah, I don't mind having "problematic" stuff in books, what I mind is when it's just there.

I also rate books based upon how I felt reading them...in addition to the writing style and other things. I read a lot of older books and under the radar books more so than what’s popular or new. So I definitely take into consideration the time when those books were published. However a really good book is timeless in my opinion! It’s fun to analyze books sometimes. I definitely do not review every book I read on booktube lol

I agree that good books are timeless! But I think that's because they speak to a universal human experience that overcomes any differences there might be between the original creator (because books aren't the only stories we turn to again and again) and the people who pick it up much later.

I think I rate with a mix of critical and enjoyment. Oh yeah, I can't separate any sort of bias or taste in a book XD
