How can we describe the combination that makes a book 5 stars? Or any other rating, for that matter?

I like that you start the video saying that you will probably not be able to deliver your thoughts as eloquently as Angela did, only to then continue to give a super clear and detailed overview of your rating system, lol. Don't talk yourself down, you said it all perfectly!! 🥰 I wish I were more easy to please, but I tend to be a bit stingy with my 5-star ratings. I used to only reserve them for those 'magical' reading experiences where you feel like a book moved you so much that it will stay with you forever. But the sad reality is that those reading experiences are quite rare (at least for me), so I've been getting more lenient and I am actually starting to enjoy giving out 5 stars to books that I just had a blast reading! Also, I am completely with you on having to be invested in the characters. If I can't latch onto anyone I'm following, then it will never be able to become a favourite book for me. That's why I think most older sci-fi (or any other concept/theme based books) don't tend to work as well for me. And I am (sadly) also not a visual reader, so I really relate to everything you said about the writing having to be immersive enough to completely capture me. Now that I am really thinking about it, it seems like we are *very* similar in how we experience and rate books, haha. Loved this video, thanks for sharing!! ❤

Yeah I do completely respect people who reserve 5 stars for their absolute faves, I've just never been able to separate it like that! Plus, often I won't even know if something is an all-time favourite until it has time to sit with me for a while. Also, I completely agree with what you said about older sci-fi or books that rest on their concepts! I do think we're pretty similar in our approach 🥰

Although I no longer rate books, I always find this topic interesting because I like to learn what captivates readers. I’m like you in how writing style affects my immersion. I am a visual reader, and I’ve been recently hearing many others say they don’t visualize what they read. That doesn’t seem to be necessary for enjoyment or having the emotional experience we all desire. 😊

I find it really cool that you don’t rate books! On one hand, ratings really help me organize my thoughts, but on the other hand, everyone uses the system slightly differently so describing your feelings is just as effective. And you communicate so well 😊

Thanks for the video. My personal rating system evolves but for me to give a book five stars, I have to not only enjoy the book but something about it has to impress me. It could be the writing, the characters, the word building, the plot, the twist, etc. Just some aspect that this book really excels and stands out among all the books I read. Sometimes I read books and it feels like I've read something similar before so I really gravitate toward stories that have that something special about them.

I totally understand that!! I know what you mean, how it’s a different feeling when some part of the book really excels 😊
