Now we're talkin! was hoping you would do one of these! Have you ever just noodled around with beats first and played on top of it to get ideas on riffs? I find myself doing that more than dreaming up riffs.
@RobArnoldWorld

Definitely Nate! I'll often times think of the beat first! Like something that gets my head bobbing... and then I'll lay that down, then let the riffs flow!

I just learned a ton from this. I'm glad you did it from the very beginning to the end with no stops or edits. I ran into some of the same things you did and it's good to know it is a normal part of the process and see how you worked through it. For instance, staying tight on multi tracks as you are making it up is tough sometimes.

This was a good little workshop! I have a 5 year old kid and my wife has a disability so little tricks that help streamline really make a big difference for me. Thank you! Also that tap tempo thing is huge for me because I'm building an ambient pedalboard and I was very worried about how to sync my daw to my track instead of essentially writing FOR the daw. You rock sir!

Cool! Glad to have turned you onto an alternate method! But it can also be done the way you described or have been doing it. It would just require a different process/mindset. Anyway, give this method a try, and I hope it leads to killer results for you!🎸

Thanks Rob, I love this format (bit longer video to really take time on a particular topic) As follow up to this video it would be great if you could speak about how you transform those kind of ideas into a complete song (i.e. songwritting basically) I accumulate a lot of ideas, riffs, etc... and I believe the most tricky part is putting it all toghether into something intriguing and exciting.

I can’t even begin to tell u how much I appreciate this video, I started watching the patreon early version this morning then had to take a break to take care of my sick daughter then I noticed the KZbin video had been released and I’m going to b using this as a guide. I’ve been recently learning about using a daw and creating songs and using plug ins in a daw and since it’s still relatively new to me some KZbin videos about creating songs and arrangements within a daw are still slightly confusing. I just find your approach so straight forward and u get right to the exact same things I want to accomplish with all this great software!!! Thank u so much once again this is a great video for this!!!!

thank you so freaking much for this.... these types of videos were what i was hoping the Rockhouse DVD of yours was going to be like. Not complaining about those lessons, just wish they would have let you go deeper into how you write. The self-title album was so life changing for me and is still my favorite album... and of course, IIRC you wrote damn near everything on that album. Inside The Horror was one i was obsessed with for the longest time, but nothing came close to Lazarus. The way that song slowly built leading into that solo always left goosebumps on my arms :) i love it when you show us how your head works when writing something

THX so much .... that actually answered one of my life long questions . My process for years has been ...1 have a riff in my head ..2 record a drum track that's close to the riff that I'm hearing in my head .. 3 record the guitar to match the drums ..... but by the time I do that the " magic " of the riff is gone ..if that makes sense . I did not have a technique for syncing the drums AFTER the guitar .

Really helpful tips here, great vid. Question though. For recording guitar cabs as far as mics, do you recommend Shure SM57 or Sennheiser E609? I have an E609, and it's pretty decent, but I've heard SM57 is the way to go. They're both good but I want the best.
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! In my experience, the SM57 is used more in the studio, and the e609 was used more often in live scenarios, like on stage. Both are great at what they do, but the 57 is more versatile, because it can more easily be used to record multiple sources. (vocals, horns, snares, etc.) So as a workhorse in any situation, the 57 is what I'd take with me to a deserted island. If you're interested, producer Ben Schigel always preferred a Royer 121 when recording Chimaira guitars in the studio. It's quite expensive though. Cheers!🎸

Rob, what's your opinion on DI boxes? Do you use a specific one (if so, why?) or your interface's DI input? Thanks for sharing your tips!
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Years ago I heard from a respected engineer, that the Countryman DI was the way to go. So I got it, and I've used it for years now, and I notice no difference whatsoever when compared to using my interface DI's. (So lately, I haven't been using the Countryman) However, because the Countryman (and most DI boxes) has a "thru" on it, it's still an essential tool for the studio. Like when I'm tracking guitars though a real amp, I'll always simultaneously record the guitars DI signal. This allows for much easier editing in post, and allows the flexibility for re amping at a later date. 🎸

YO again, Rob. Really digging ALL of your content in a big way. Since this video is recording related, I have a question that is seemingly difficult to get answered and that is the LEVEL at which you ingest real guitars or your DI. Do you aim for -18 dbFS? -12 dbFS? I'm sure by now you have found the sweet spot where you get the headroom you need and do not come in super crazy hot like so many cats end up doing and slamming damn near digital 0. What does RA aim for when he's trackin'? THANKS!
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld 2 жыл бұрын
Good to hear bro! I guess I usually aim for about -12 to -10db. I really just eyeball the level rather than looking at the numbers though. I want it hot, but I know the signal will increase as I add plugins. So I just kind of mentally compensate for that. Cheers!🎸
