I have a fun little story: 1 year ago I assigned to my first comp. I signed for 7 events including square-1. Thing is: I didn't even HAD a square-1. So i bought it. It was still a month till the comp so i bought one. I waited and waited, but the cube didn't arrive. So there was I at the comp, signed in for square-1 and don't even owning one. But the worst part: I didn't even know how to saolve it. I was really lucky and there was a table where people could sell their old cubes. So then I had the cube and still didn't even know how to solve it. So i sat down and watched some tutorials. I was really confused sometimes but finally made it! If there were no parity... That's the story of how I learned square-1 on the competition a day before competing in it. (Maybe thats why I dislike sq1)

Yaaay congratss on venturing into one of the best WCA side puzzles (imo, along with Megaminx), and sooner or later, after getting back to squan, learning scallop-kite for cubeshape, learning the EOs and CPs, and some good EPs (M2 helps so much here), and even practicing parity even more, you'll become much better at it, just as it used to be when I almost podiumed at a comp! I don't squan that much nowadays and have gotten slower at it, but still quite enjoy doing it too, it's just really nice of a puzzle, and really satisfying to learn to solve with the hard work! Congratss again, and much love! ❤️

Hi tingman! Question: I’m a Christian like you and most cubing comps are on the weekends (colliding with church). My parents wont let me go the a comp if i would be able to make finals since I would have to stay there the whole of Sunday. This didn’t matter when I was a beginner since I could just go some of the day then go to church (my church is at 1:00 - 3:00 nz time) . What should I do? And also what do you do??? Also tip for squan (or any cube): remember to auf the correct way

That’s a really good question. I have some flexibility with church times because there are multiple services and also all the sermons are recorded. But it definitely is not ideal to skip church for a competition. I think you’ll just to make the best out of this tricky situation and ultimately it’s most important to obey your parents.

I became sub-1 minute using the following method: Get the 6 point star. If you have the Millenium Falcon then do the same thing that Tingman did. If you have the Millenium Falcon but with one edge between the 2 corners, do the alg that comes with the Qiyi solving sheet - /(2,2)/(1,0)/(2,2)/(1,0)/(-1,0)/(0,-3)/ Then intuitively orient the corners. Next, do the edges using the two algs on the Qiyi sheet. Then permute the corners using the following four algs (also on the Qiyi sheet): 1. /(-3,3)/(3,-3)/ 2. /(0,3)/(0,-3)/(0,3)/(-3,0)/(3,-3)/ 3. /(-3,0)/(3,0)/(-3,0)/(0,3)/(3,-3)/ 4. /(-3,0)/(3,3)/(0,-3)/ Finally, permute the edges with the following two algs (once again, on the Qiyi sheet): 1. (-1,0)/(5,-1)/(-5,1)/(1,0) 2. (1,0)/(0,3)/(-1,-1)/(1,-2)/(-1,0) I use the following parity algorithm (I only use one please don't criticise me): /(-3,0)/(0,3)/(0,-3)/(0,3)/(2,0)/(0,2)/(-2,0)/(4,0)/(0,-2)/(0,2)/(-1,4)/(0,-3)/(0,3)
@mkay29704 жыл бұрын
I’d actually say that there are some triggers with square 1 such as M2 (1,0)/(-1,-1)/(0,1) and once you’re more advanced you memorize the cube shape cases by name like scallop-kite is commonly used as a trigger for plenty of different cubeshape algs.
@alexhaley214 жыл бұрын
I used the same sheet, and I’m averaging about a minute now (I still have more algs to learn) but I will get there. I also learnt Parity as one of the first algs ( it is one you can just slam from cube shape so it is easy to remember)

To get faster, you might want to learn scallop kite and scallop scallop cube shape. I'm a newb to cubing and over the past few months, got myself a gan 2x2, gan 3x3, moyu skewb, a yj megaminx and a volt v2 squan (also just ordered a little magic 4x4). I expected to really enjoy squewb and megaminx the most but my favorites are square 1 and 2x2. I'm dyslexic so I find the cube notation hard to remember and really unintuitive. Couldn't for the life of me tell you what a down prime or back prime move was right now. But with the squan, the notation just makes sense and I've already memorized like 10 algorithms in past 2 weeks, including the main adj edge parity alg. It also helps that the slice is direction agnostic and that there are only really two layers that you have to move. Square 1 just is so satisfying to practice too and I feel like every time I pick it up, I improve in a realistic manner (my pb right now is a sub 30 with the average being about 1:10). Really wish there was more hardware the volt is great but I can tell that it has nothing on my gan cubes in terms of quality. I hope that square 1 gains more popularity in the near future and as a result gets some strong releases. Would love to see a gan square 1 with core facing magnets.
@spacevspitch40283 жыл бұрын
I was inspired by J-perm to try solving it first time with no help. No idea how the notation works or algs or anything. Took me a few days of random 10-20 min sessions to get it to nearly solved except I had adjacent corner parity. I spent days after that screwing around and eventually ended up turning the adjacent corner parity to adjacent edge parity. I was SO determined to solve it entirely without help of any kind but I knew going into it that parity was a possibilty and that supposedly it's a really long alg. So, my mindset is, is it even possible to figure out parity "intuitively"? I mean, somebody had to figure it out at some point with no help, right?
