Elizabeth, My wife used an audio pen that would record and match her notes to the audio when she was in college. She took her notes on special paper that had a pattern on it that allowed the pen to synchronize the audio to her notes when she played it back. She would just run the pen over that section and it would play the audio. She would transcribe the critical part professor's lecture on her computer. This allowed her to rewind and replay when she had trouble understanding. I did a quick search and I see they now make "Pen Scanners" that will allow to to scan over text and it will convert it to editable text for import into other applications. You take the pen and use it like a highlighter. Those sections are translated into text for import. I don't have any experience with them, that is what I read in their descriptions. You can also take pictures of the page with your Smartphone and then there are applications that will convert the image to text. I hope that will help you.

The most important part of the rules you follow that I'm sympatico with is the why For compiling written or photo or whatever entities at that time which provoke a tropism I'm not fully aware why but I'm sure I will find out when I find the time , if I haven't noted the why somewhere I promised myself that upon finding out I didn't affix my why I would get a tazr and put to my temple then let a low voltage of a charge felt from the left cerebral cortex out the right ensuring both parts of my brain are responsible... it's because the why is that important in developing an unrealized whole even if a whole is no longer an important pursuit I still want to know why it's been there. Very important referencing the why. thank you

What I always do is take notes the day after I did read it. With 2 reasons: 1 it filters what you think is most important and makes you think about why you missed the other parts. 2 it is a kind of "test" to check out what you actually did get and what not. (I read philosophy a lot and I found this useful)

It's great to hear someone else say that they treat physical books like 'gold' and find note taking a struggle. I've just gotten into note taking, it was such a pain for the first book I read that I gave up. Putting down the book, opening the laptop, going back and forth to copy quotes was harder than I thought. But, I did add the Notion Clipper extension and just figured out how to export notes from Google Play Books! GREAT things I pulled from this video.

Just discovered Elizabeth today and such relevant content, for me. So many puzzles you have thought through are similar to mine and my conclusions, and I always feel inclined to share my insights somewhere but I haven't figured out how, yet. I feel like an older, more neurotic more confused version of a similar personality: Made up of a lot of different "people" with different and sometimes seemingly contradictory, but just as vivid, valid and salient, motivations. And I'm equal parts inspired and intimidated. 😆❣

In the mean time I struggle to read/finish books and strongly prefer saving articles and reading them later. I save the article, print it, then organize it (physical copy). Then whenever I have the need to look at a category/topic I find the physical copy and read it. Usually I write my own summary and save that in a binder. What I like most about my method is that often I find myself looking at the same subject often but word it differently when I search so I get very different results.

On audiobooks, I listen mostly in the car so note taking has been an issue. Two workarounds I’ve used: 1. Use dictation to make a bookmarked note in Audible. 2. Set up a routine in Shortcuts on iOS to utilise Siri to add a dictated note to Notes. “Hey Siri, add book note …” I find the act or articulating a thought out loud both challenging and rewarding. It’s one step better than bottling it up in my head and forgetting.

I do enjoy listening to the audio while reading the Kindle book, but it can be expensive to buy both. There are quite a few where the Audible version is deeply discounted if you already own the Kindle (or purchase together) but in my experience the really good deals tend to be mostly novels. But it really does help me focus and retain much more of the information - I wish there were more non-fiction books priced such that I'd be willing to purchase both formats. Also, thanks for this great information. I do lots highlighting in my Kindle books but rarely go back and review them. I'll have to check out some of these apps you went through in this video.

But I am a bit curious here: is there a special reason that you keep two separate databases in Notion for your links and the Readwise integration? Currently, I'm clipping all my links right inside the same database as Readwise does, but would like to know your reasons to deal with it separately.

Thank you for your channel- it is very inspiring for a book reader. I got impression that you read a lot. Is it important for you to re-read whole book? I would quote Nabokov here: “ one cannot read a book: one can only reread it. A good reader, a major reader, an active and creative reader is a rereader.” He explained later that reading first time is a hard work ( especially with notes) but rereading same book is a great pleasure for him. Thank you!
