that's the hardest part of getting into tech...not everyone can get to enterprise hardware. Thanks for the videos

Found this about 3 1/2 years later, lol But I'm amazed how relevant this still is, watched a few videos you made over the last few months, and i pick up a little more each time, I've got 2 R610's, and 2 R710's and this is good info for anyone looking to get into the retired enterprise level stuff, in any case great job, and thanks!

Man, I am so jealous of that wooden chassis you built, it's very nice! I'm about to order my second R610 and while they stack well I need a chassis like this!

My server is almost the same as yours, which Java version are you using? I totally agree with you about the Java version, now that I use the latest version my console doesn't work at all...

@napalm38995 жыл бұрын
The RJ-45 port with IOIOI marked on it is a serial console port.

It looks like every server has a USB-stick plugged in to the back. What are they for? Maybe a noob question, but I'm just starting to build a home network with servers as a hobby, and got curious.

Nino Durden Bootable usb with ESXI for example.
@robwillisinfo7 жыл бұрын
Exactly as was mentioned, in this case I am booting VMware ESXi 6 off of USB drives since the OS footprint is so small and once booted ESXi will actually be running from memory. Instead of wasting a physical disk on ESXi, you can now use that to run more VMs :)

Lol insert typical "yea what they said" comment here. Although to be honest, I'm kind of surprised he is using USB sticks on the outside. If I recall correctly... Those servers have an internal USB port specifically for this exact use... And I know for a fact the 2000 series poweredge he showed here does, as I've got two of these servers bothing running esxi 6 (for the moment) off of cheapo 1$ 16GB sticks inside the physical server chasis.

@@robwillisinfo are there any machine specific configs that are written to the USB drive? Or does it really just act like a non writable boot medium?

Dear, I am looking for a solution wherein my Dell Server T630 can acommodate ESXi and Windows 2019 OS as physical servers. I have Windows server 2019 installed on my RAID 0 (SAS drive) and I want to add one SSD SATA 2.5 to my Server and build another RAID 0 for ESXI Server... Is it possible? what should do that I select one of my two options ESXI OR Win2019 to bootup?

Hello mate, I was searching for IPMI then your video came up. What is IPMI please, is it a hardware embedded into the server or a software/tool.
@robwillisinfo5 жыл бұрын
I can see why you are asking this, I have been there :) IPMI is more of a protocol that is typically (from my experience at least) used to control the "out of band" embedded hardware like Baseboard Management Controllers (BMC) or DRAC's. You can use things like IPMITools on linux to power a server on or off, check bios settings, hardware health, etc - when the server has the appropriate hardware of course. Hope that helps!

How do I setup a java console? Is there a download for the java console software and how do I successfully separate the IPMI management ports so that I can use my Four intel onboard nics while using only the realtek gigabit nic for just IPMI management alone? Every time I try to separate them it somehow reverts back to it's previous setting of being on both ports than one.

Very nice but you need to add the word "DELL" to the title since other manufacturers are not always the same.

I am having trouble with the java virtual console for iDRAC7. Sometimes I am able to get mouse/keyboard inputs to navigate the menu, and sometimes I cant get any keyboard inputs or mouse inputs at all. I am able to enter fast!Utils and RAID Config, but when I enter the setup menu, boot manager, or lifecycle controller, it will stop responding. I can still perform control commands like boot into, restart, power off, power on etc. iDRAC responds via the web portal. But even the HTML console will display the same behavior. Do you know what could cause something like that?

How have the 1U dells been treating ya? I've been tempted to go out and buy a couple of them for a short while now, but haven't made up my mine if I want to get those, or bite the bullet and get hp proliants like what are in use where I work. Really don't like HP's iLo2 systems... And love dell's drac system... Decisions decisions

I love them, especially my Poweredge R610 servers. I've had to support many dells and hps at work, i feel your pain on the iLo and we have had tons of firmware related issues with them. Cant say Id ever buy one. Dell FTW :)

How did you get your server to work with firefox? My dell poweredge 1950 doesn't ask to install the java kvm when I click Connect. Also it doesn't tell me that I need the plugin nor does it display the plugin type under attribute. Internet explorer 11allows me to connect and use the mouse but I can't use my keyboard and I cant install the certificate. Google chrome doesn't even work at all. I ripping my hair out, what am I doing wrong! Any help would be much appreciated.
@robwillisinfo7 жыл бұрын
Not sure what exactly you are seeing but most browsers are now disabling SSL v3 and the RC4 cipher, which is required for most of these older DRACs/BMCs. You can trying enabling those settings on FF or try downgrading to an older version of FF. Chrome is more aggressive with SSL/TLS security so I usually stick to FF when connecting to older hardware. Also I would update the DRAC to the newest firmware available from dell, which may enable newer protocol/cipher support as well as update the certificate which is most likely self signed and possibly expired. Good luck!
@Nightstalker3501197 жыл бұрын
Will do, thanks for the tip, also yea that's what chrome was bitching about was the cyper key being old. I'll see about down grading FF. I'm pretty sure the cards are up to date but I'll double check. What I was meaning, when you click on the console window to start it. It's just blank. Nothing pops up in the window. It doesn't even ask me to enable a Java KVM extension.
@Nightstalker3501197 жыл бұрын
Got it working, my Drac5 firmware was out of date, also had to downgrade java 8 to java 7, got to the security file in C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\lib\security and Comment out the line jdk.tls.disabledAlgorithms=SSLv3 after that, add the ip addresses in java security GUI. It turns out from wiki that Firefox is the only Drac supported browser. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Do you need to be in the same network to access it ? Because DRAC & ILO seems to have a private IP..
@robwillisinfo7 жыл бұрын
It's just like any other private IP, if you want public access you will need to forward the ports from a public IP to the private IP. In this case the BMC is accessed over port 443. However I strongly discourage exposing these to the internet. If you need remote access, use a VPN.

@robwillisinfo6 жыл бұрын
That is correct! The grey are hypervisors, red is SAN/Storage, the orange cable is a SPAN, black is DRAC/BMC, yellow is unfiltered internet and blue is just misc.

Hello! I got a 2950 just like you but the console is not working AT All what version of Java are you running? and what version of fire fox? and which version of DRAC :/
@robwillisinfo6 жыл бұрын
It has been a minute since I had to DRAC into a 2950 and I do not have one anymore but the last time I did it I used Java 7 32bit and Firefox 34. Java needs to have SSL V3 enabled which may or may not be enabled by default and the browser needs RC4 support which later versions of Firefox removed, but the early 30s should have it. Good luck, hope that helps!
