Remotely control your computer with any laptop, tablet or phone using Google Chrome Remote Desktop.
I’m an architecture student. I recently started an internship, which is great. But before I started, they asked if I could bring in my laptop to work on.
This would be fine if I had a good laptop with all the software I need, and that can actually run all that software, but I don’t. That’s what my home desktop is for.
I have a really powerful desktop at home but my laptop, is, well, a piece of shit. I can take notes off of it and that’s about it.
I wanted to use my desktop, but without carrying it with me on the back of my bike to work each day.
As a solution, I’ve been remotely connecting to my desktop from the office using my shitty old laptop that can’t even handle opening a new document in photoshop.
How? Using google chrome’s remote desktop app.
The process is incredibly simple to set up and use. It’s free and is an absolute game changer.
The way it works is that you use your laptop, tablet or phone as a monitor to control your desktop at home. Your secondary device (laptop, tablet or phone) acts as a remote control that controls your desktop at home. It takes advantage of your desktop’s hardware without having to physically have a desktop with you.
There’s now no need to upgrade to a fancy, high-spec laptop. All you need is a second hand $150 laptop like the one I have that can remotely connect to your computer at home. I do this for work, my internships and when at campus for university.
There’s no more working across different drives on different computers, getting home and having to copy all my new files over. There’s no need for cloud storage. I just remotely connect to my computer at home and work from those drives.
How about lag?
The connection is based off your Wi-Fi connection. If you have a slow or broken internet connection, you will experience some delay in your remote connection to your desktop. However, if you have both your desktop and laptop connected to a stable Wi-Fi, you won’t experience any lag whatsoever.
In this guide, you’ll learn how to remotely control your computer with any device for free using Google Chrome Remote Desktop.

This is also handy for live concert mixing, I can have my laptop in the crowd and listen to what the crowd hears, while my desktop with all it's ADAT racks and Cubase with all my low-latency pluggins is mixing the band - no long fiber optic cables, no 100 foot XLR runs. Just a laptop in the crowd.

You would have to plug it into the device you want the files on, you can't copy between them. I would often just use Google drive though as the middle man. Plug the USB into the laptop, drop it into Drive and then open it on my PC through my laptop.

Well sort of. You are using the device. Think of it like you're sitting at that computer using it, but you are using it from afar.

Do you need an internet connection for this? If not, will SIM card work?

I wonder what happens in case of a power cut. It happens to me pretty often with a desktop that I work remote on and it can get annoying. Is there any way you can turn it on from distance without asking someone to physically push the power button? Thanks!

Good question! There are ways to do it but not directly with the software. I will have to create another video on that. Best wishes

I simply wanted to turn on my PC by remote control at home as I did not want to get up out of my chair with my yellow lab sitting on my lap. I also did not want to use a phone or app to turn it on and off so here is how I did it. I added a remote control to my Minisforum mini pc by adding a "remote control power strip". Set the Bios (hit delete button during boot up), change the setting to enable pc to start after power outage. Then simply turn the pc off normally but after pc shuts down power off the power strip. When you turn power strip back on PC boots up automatically. Simple, cheap and effective! Hope this helps everyone.

Good idea my concern is if someone stole the computer and turned it on there's no password to get in?

Does this turn on the desktop? or do you have to leave the desktop on when u leave for work?

I have to turn the desktop on before I go to work. There are methods of starting your computer remotely though, search for "Wake on Lan" (can also be done through teamviewer) or "Switchbot" (literally a robot that presses the on button remotely)

Hi Kyle, Thank you. Is there a way I can print a document locally while I am remotely connected to my desktop? I am home and need to print a document saved on my desktop at the office. I can save it on my google drive and then access it from there and print but I am trying to see if there is a way to print to a local printer. Thanks, JA Law

Hi JA Law, as long as both the remote computer and printer are on and connected, I don't see why this shouldn't work. Cheers

@@kylesinko Hi Kyle, for some reason I cannot. It is printed in my office instead of the local computer I am using. Do I have to use remote google printing? Thanks

Great stuff. I wish it was possible to remotely wake my main PC from the laptop connection, though.

So do I! It would be so handy. There are other ways to do it however - see "Wake on LAN" or "SwitchBot"
