Really enjoyed watching this. Learned a bit, questioned things that are trivial. I applaud you on the work, subject manner (never heard of the character) and your explanation. I will say, for blending colors without the color blender, as you already know, you can always go over the darker color with the lighter tone to get an even smoother gradation. And it's fairly minimal with each pass. Kinda fun too. Hope to see more soon! Have a great day!

Cool technique! Have you ever tried watercolor (either tube, pan, or pencil) for doing the gradations? It seems like they would work well together.

Yes! I have a love/hate relationship with watercolors. I’ve been using it for other commissions but I still yet to master it, I tend to use it for more organic images where I can be more free since I still don’t know how to control it well, might be a personal perception since the volatile nature of watercolor it what makes it charming…guess is part of the artistic journey

Hi Jorge. Can you show us how traditional comics were hand colored? I know they used to kind of screen print them when they were on newpaper type of paper. Was there a phase between that and computer coloring?
@jorgemolina4264
@jorgemolina4264 Күн бұрын
Great question! I’m not very familiar with how it was done in the past but I think it was screen printed rather than using acrylics or watercolors. Then digital came into the picture and it was the industry standard for as long as I remember.

@jorgemolina4264 I became curious when I noticed that inking was always done to pencils 1st. That made me wonder, how do they add the color without going over the inked part? Thanks for your reply.

How do u decide when to use pencils vs markers? At first, I thought u were just using pencils for a gradient effect, but then u started blending with markers. And it doesn’t seem that u used different mediums for different textures either, because both were used on both skin and cloth. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

Yes, it depends on the “look” I want to achieve, I usually think about how I want the end result to look, for this I didn’t want the classic black ink render with colors, I wanted my lines to blend in with the markers and have a more realistic look to it. So that’s why I “inked” the piece with prismacolors first, always picking darker value tones but with a similar color of the area I’m tracing, dark blue to the blue suit, dark brow to the sking, etc etc. that way once I start adding the markers (which blend really well with the prismacolors btw) I can have the boundaries of my areas already established by my lineart, and that’s where I start adding shadow and creating depth and mass with the markers and at the very end I go back with prismacolors again to define shapes, add gradients and darken any shadows. Hope this helped!
