Liked the craft time... this is basically how I started to self publish and print our own hard back books, I've got a better jig, and apply the cloth, 2 pieces either side, apply laminate sheet covered wood boards either side of the book while its still in the bending clamp, use some wood work quick tighten clamps and then use clue on the spine and fold down the two pieces of fabric on the spine, slightly over lapping, take out of the main jig, and put on the floor to dry for an hour or so... I've made so far 1000's of books this well that we sell ourselfs, because I didn't have the knowhow or space yet to expand to a binding machine (preferable stiches and real glue), so found this way. I have some clips I shot of my generally process, but you encouraged me to finish it up and actually put it on my channel soon :)

9 Months ago. ... ok. ... first time watching very impressed, and that paper cutting machine WOW* Awesome. Love it. If I can help and you did ask, there is so much EMF and I'm sure Wifi in your shop that IMO as a Building Analyst (Retired) I would get the square footage of your shop and add Cross Venting. ... Specially up at the ceiling where all the heat is rising, it really is not being pulled out of all areas or any area but those Swirling round vent in roof at every 25 feet work wonders in keeping the building in climate check. If you don't want to take it that far, a few Casablanca Ceiling Fans (the ones with the pull down elastic, so you can pull down a few feet when needed for comfort and push up out of the way when you don't need it) so you can move air and moisture around and depending on the season, you can flip the switch on these fans for pulling AC up and or pushing some heat from ceiling Down during the heating season. Heat and Humidity are like apples and oranges, so on a humid day, with the above mentioned, you'll never have to open the gate for comfort and just so you know on a humid day opening your gate is letting humidity in that later when you close the gate, it's very hard to get rid of and will be in shop and decaying paper goods and drying up ink heads on account of some nano condensation build up from leaving the gate opened on a humid day. Re: the pressboards you used to rebind this book. ... on the back lower pressboard end -add a not so thick but close to thin metal ruler as a backboard not only to stop the book at its very back end but the ruler part to know and have book lined up and it also presses it some for a better glued binding cover fold to paper, and there's a plus to the metal ruler that it can be warmed, (hot air gun) so it's and evened nicely pressed glue job. Just makes for a better tight job with no future call backs on account of maybe some pages coming loose again. You're welcome and I'll check out your other vids up here thanks for the education, we never stop learning and picking up tips. ...

Quick tip, at least this works in woodworking with use of PVA glue. Put clear packing tape on your wood clamps. The glue won't stick to them. Of course you want try it to make sure but the glue shouldn't stick to the clear packing tape. Woodworking is my hobby. My sawdust therapy. LOL

As always. I enjoyed the video. The paper problem is still pretty bad. I know you have not had any issues with American eagle paper yet. But I just had some yesterday setting up a 3-3 job on press. The paper had pits all through out the roll. Where my screen hit the pits it looked like a blanket smash. I know I’m one of the few offset guys left. But we still have a small roll to play. We also had an issue with someone running out paper cross grain. We were sheeting off paper for out envelope converter. They cut the pull side of the paper cross grain. They could not get the machine to pull or fold well. Pretty much a was of time paper and risk of damaging equipment. Keep the videos coming I really enjoy when I get to see a new one.

Attempting to cool down your shop by opening the garage door to let the fresh air in is better than solely relying on conditioned air, since it is unnatural. Good work! (I remember writing on my blog over a decade ago about cheap paperback books from the US I bought which didn't feel right when turning the pages, and I attributed it to the wrong grain direction of the paper. Someone who claimed to be a printer then called me an idiot because he was adamant that the grain direction of the paper had no influence. Glad to see that my intuition wasn't wrong after all.) 2:30 Is there a tear in the rubber roller? Can that become a problem in the future?
@justaprinter
@justaprinter 2 жыл бұрын
You were correct, grain direction makes or breaks a book. That torn lower roller will run like that for awhile without effecting quality negatively. That lower roller really just applies pressure to the paper as it passes under the transfer belt.
@winch1587
@winch1587 2 жыл бұрын
Great job. Let's me think of years back, when I bound books. Normally I rough up the paper first after clamping, before putting on the glue. I did it with a knife, making cris cross patterns. After putting on the glue, I would then put on the inforcement (medical cotton gauze) add some more glue and then put on the second clamp. I find that those stitches keeps the book from opening completely. That black roller that keeps pressure on the paper against the transferbelt, is called paper transfer roller. It has an electrical charge that pulls the toner from the belt to the paper. Any scratches or tears may result in image issues on paper.

My wife is a librarian and sometimes has to deal with rebinding, fixing or repairing books. The thing is, however, that most books are available for download and have cover art available online, so she's said a lot of that old repair work is going the way side because they just reprint the book instead of repairing it. On demand printing is both a good and bad thing I guess.

We are an inplant and in 2010 we were going to be closed and outsourced, but luckily some fast thinking senator who works at the County building had a bright idea and got the Board of Elections to give us the task of printing the county's voting ballots. its very stressful every election, you literally have zero room for failure in printing hundreds of thousands of ballots but it saved our shop and here we are still here in 2024 and the good news is, the people who wanted to outsource us are gone AND the Board of Elections have now switched to printing the ballots at the polling sites,, so now we can relax as we are now just the backup ballots not THE ballots and we can relax as we dont print hardly anywhere neat what we used to. and been there 37 years thinking of retiring with a nice pension. printing had been good to me.

If you can find people that can be taught book bindering (the craftsmen are few and far between now) then you might be able to make some change. Yes, it's a "craft" at this point for you, but after about one hundred books.......not so much. Great job, but yes, it pains me to see books printed perpendicular to the paper grain; most printers see books as being a disposable item these days, sad to say. I have been in printing / publishing since nineteen eighty-eight and the things I see now would make my journeymen I apprenticed under rollover in their graves.
