I had a meniscus tear too but had to have surgery. People don't talk about injury sadness/depression enough. I couldn't walk or do anything for a bit it was awful but since then I've ran a marathon and got a 50km next month!

It's been a slow road back with up's and down's in motivation and like you say, having to listen to the body and back off when appropriate. Looking forward to more videos from you in the future!

I am coming back from a meniscus tear, and my sports ortho has been fantastic, opting for conservative treatment and PT. 30 years of running without injury, made three months without terrifying. Your advice listening to the knee is so on point. I have been taking it day by day - focusing on the successful workouts and not comparing them to pre-injury. During the last two weeks, I have been doing runs on soft surfaces. Today I did 4 miles - slow - but without stopping or pain.

I’m fairly certain I have an MCL tear however I’ve yet to get an MRI. I tried to get an MRI done last year but my insurance denied my claim. The orthopedic was unhelpful & sent me a $343 bill & that was for a 10min visit. What people rarely talk about is how expensive doctors are & how maybe some of us are on a budget, so when insurance doesn’t help, we just continue to live in discomfort or pain. This has been going on for almost 2yrs now.... Not a single day I get up without something hurting..... depression also kicks in.

Really sorry to hear. MCL tears usually heal up (depending on severity) within 3months. An MRI wouldn’t change your treatment - stretch, cycle, and gradually increase your jog/walk 2 x week. Let us know how you get on.

Cross training while injured is absolutely key to keeping up fitness and motivation, not going crazy- and not becoming an obnoxious whining downer your non- fitness friends can't stand being around. Lol After dealing with all sorts of injuries, including a rib that will randomly detach from my sternum, I've learned there's almost always SOMETHING you can do without aggravating the injury.

I’ve had a partial meniscus tear on my inner knee that doesn’t require surgery. It’s been 2 months now and the injury heals slowly. My knee bends fine and I don’t have trouble walking or going up/down the stairs. I can feel that there is some pain as I raise the knee but I was given the OK to jog 10-15 min. It’s natural but like Brad said, listen to your body. I only jog twice a week for now. But on another topic, yes, not running for daily runners is rough! For anyone who is going through it, you’re not alone. It can be mentally debilitating. Depression/anxiety does set in but give it time. Try cycling and other exercises for the time being. Also, give some meditation a try as well. We want our bodies to heal and only thing we can do is be patient and do exercises that help strengthen the glutes/hips. I know it’s tough but hang in there! You will get through it for anyone reading this. Use this time wisely to build the mental muscles for the time being so when you get back to running at 100%, you’ll come back way stronger than before.

Hopefully - This finds you well. I too am going through this as well. I took about 3 months off running - was able to walk and elliptical the entire time. Just now returning to running with PT specialist help- But am learning temp limits - dialing back when I overdo it the day before. But I am learning to listen to my body and enjoy every little bit of progress.

I completely tore my medial meniscus and have a minor sprain to my acl and the doctor recommended surgery but I chose to try an alternative. Today is a little over a month later and I was able to ride my bike for half a mile… baby steps. Thank you for this video sir!!

Thank you for this video! I hurt my meniscus last Oct, "listened to my knee", and stopped running. It is now July, and I feel better! My doctor also said I did the right thing by stopping. It has been depressing not to run, and I gained 30 lbs! Looking to start up hopefully this week. Wish me good luck! Cheers!

This is such a helpful video. I tore my meniscus on Dec 31st (not dancing at a NYE party) - going for a run. It was very painful. I couldn't even walk without a stinging pain, especially down stairs, ramps etc. Uphill wasn't much better. While the doctor was empathetic, the physiotherapist was fantastic. I am now at 6 months post tear and doing squats, bridges, steps. Yesterday under the advice of my physio, I tried a 4K walk with two 30 second jogs. No problem. I did it again the second day and have woken with that swollen feeling behind my knee. Typical of me to try it two days in a row. Have since had two days off and it's settled down. Boy I have had town hamstrings, have had a broken ankle, but this seems to be a really slow recovery. I am now thinking, as Run Experience suggests, of getting a bike as I don't like life without that beautiful feeling of having my heart and lungs pumping. It's just too flat and boring.

I've overcompensated the weight on my other knee and that gets uncomfortable sometimes. I am 39 and I will slowly build up, just like you did. I did my right inner meniscus about eight weeks ago - it is a degenerative tear - I am over 50 and being running long distances three times per week for most of my life. Outlook is probably 6-9 months before running is likely. So I have bought myself a really decent exercise bike, and I am now building up my new found love of indoor cycling. And have made it back to half an hour cycles - be a while before I hit 1 hour cycles, and before I hit the sort of anerobic capacity I had before. But it will come back.

Now after 10 months, manage to run for 15 min on treadmill. Really need to get a good shoe. I am 64 years and miss my triathlon events. Hope to eventually run again

Currently dealing with what doctor describes as a complex meniscus tear after reviewing my MRI. I am on wait list to see an orthopaedic surgeon (long wait). I have joined a gym, I walk to and from the gym 3x-week, do the elliptical, treadmill,and recumbent bike at the gym. 1st week of January, I started mixing some gentle run intervals on the treadmill (walk 2 minutes_run 1 minute x4 for 2 weeks, then increase the run to 2 minutes, next week ,will increase to 3 minutes for 2 weeks. Pain level has been low ( 2/10) sometimes no pain at all. Hope to enter some shorter races come spring/summer and possibly avoid surgery. I found your video most I inspirational !

Unfortunately I suffered a bucket handle tear on my lateral meniscus, so even though the knee recovered (swelling went down etc) it kept clicking and popping in and out of place. I decided to have surgery 2 month ago, and the clicking and popping is gone, but it's going to take some time to strengthen my leg again because I had altered my way of walking on an injured meniscus. Very hopeful though, it's getting better everyday and ultimately I think surgery was necessary for my tear.

Possibly. Surgery has its place if the meniscus is locking, or catching and conservative treatment isn’t helping.

Six years ago I tore my right medial "95% of it's length" - according to the MRI and the MD. I passed on the surgery even though I could not run, bike, swim or play golf - my favorites. I eventually learned from the Salk Institute researcher, dr. Satchin Panda, that eating after sundown IS VERY bad for you - causes inflammation ALL through the night. I figured maybe my injury would benefit from no added inflammation. Today I can and do run competitively, play golf VERY competitively and could swim and bike but have lost interest, too expensive and too much trouble. And I am 72 years old. I have run faster than the National Masters STandard of Excellent times in the 800, 1500, 5K and 10K and that was with very little training. How can this be, I was asked by a fellow elite amateur senior runner - after he had just done "the impossible" in a 10K - where his opening 5K on a certified course was almost the same time that he had run 2 days earlier in a 5K on a flat certified course that qualified him for the National Senior Road Race Championships. "How can this be possible?" He had stopped eating by 4PM the day before, to give it a try, so at race time he had not eaten for over 14 hours. By stopping early the day before his body, per Dr,. Panda, did not produce inflammation because there was no "excess circulating glucose" as a result of stopping early. THAT is what causes the inflammation ALL THRU THE NIGHT and it only begins to be addressed and healed after awakening and getting exposure to light (this wakes up the pancreas to release insulin to get rid of that excess glucose). see God's design. As Hippocrates reported over 2,000 years ago: 'If you are sick and still eating YOU are feeding your illness. Stop eating and you will heal." They knew experientially of the relationship between illness and eating. And in those days, people ate one meal a day around noon. The historian Josephus reported that for people in the Roman Culture, in the first century AD (time and location of Christ). They ate one meal at noon. The Benedictine monks ate one meal around 3PM. "Stop eating (after sundown) and you will heal."

oK. I tore my meniscus jumping off stuff on skateboard. I cant skate anymore, but this is the only thing I love in my life, apart from my family. I hate gym. Trying to kickflip a 5 stair was enough of a workout for a week.

I've had meniscus tear for 6 years but only recently had MRI to confirm this. I'm able to run on it, and it's actually my other knee that stops me from going too far as I believe I have long term it band syndrome that I've had even longer than 6 years. After research I believe the it band syndrome might be because I'm left side dominant, so I land heavier on left side when running, instead of shifting my weight evenly. I guess this means my left knee is taking to much. But anyway back to the meniscus tear. I do worry if I will, get arthritis because I've left it so long. That gets me down because sometimes I think what's the point in running and getting fast, if I won't be able to do it one day, so I'm going back to the gym, to lift weights so I have a plan b

Just diagnosed with degenerative meniscus tear. Runners need to be made aware of this injury. There’s no cure. If I had I known, I would have taken steps to prevent it. Took running and knees for granted. Gutted. 😞Training was going gang busters. Now have to swim and ride:(...It’s now been a couple of months. Surgery is not an option because the degenerative change is inside the meniscus. On a positive note I have embraced the swimming and riding and cross-training. I can now run up to 5-6k with no pain. So am able to do short course triathlons no probs. I feel I may end up a better all round athlete. The pain in knee has just naturally subsided. Although every now and then I inadvertently give it a bump. In hindsight, I should always have embraced more cross training on easy days and run more on grass. Oh well. Life goes on.

I was diagnosed with the same thing. Both my lateral and medial meniscus was torn. I just had the surgery yesterday. Even though I am taking both RX and OTC pain medication, my knee pain still is a level 10! I have the aircast system which helps, but I just hope that I didn't re-injure something while trying do light walking.

I injured mine about a month ago and it wasn't to bad. I could still walk and get around ok but a couple of days ago I went for a long walk at a nearby park and when I got home it was a little swollen but the next day I could hardly put weight on it for the pain and swelling. I use a rolling pin to push blood towards my knee. It seems to help plus some lite stretching. I'm a runner and it kills me to not run but will take it easy for as long as it takes.

Sorry to hear. Limit the walking to within capacity and put in some cycling. If unsure then seek some guidance of a local therapist that has an interest in running.

I tore my meniscus a year ago and had semi gotten better but then I used weight on them to build carport. Now I'm back to level 7-8 pain of swelling I have repair surgery july 9th I'm still scared to do it but it didn't want to heal on its own I've gained 40lbs since last year injury I just want to be physical again I hope I'm making the right decision 😔

That was my right knee, now my left must have a small tear cuz it swells n throbs on a busy day, doc doesn’t recommend surgery so just basics rehab stuff until I get them both on the same page.

I wear a supportive compression brace when doing certain activities eg planting trees & shoveling to help support. I also wear it after a run sometimes to help with recovery

Good to know, I’m sure I should wear one doing anything that requires pivoting or to aid after a long run like you said! Got 9 miles in today without a knee sleeve(neenca knee sleeve with stabilizers-it’s on Amazon)Running is so much better without that thing! Was kind of skeptical about going that far without one, but I think it’s healed and ready to rip now as long as I don’t pivot to hard again😑I do wear an IT strap on both legs though still, should I keep wearing those or is there a better solution?

I’m not sure I understand… is there any actual healing going on or is it just pain management?

There is remodelling going on and healing around the meniscus - if the tear has no blood supply (ie in inner 2/3 of meniscus) then it won’t ‘heal’ but it is possible to return to running if there are no mechanical symptoms.

Same R inner meniscus tear, degenerative. Have my spin bike, aged 55, was hiking daily 26km , dr said no surgery so doing phsio. An exercise physiologist said surgery is inevitable...unsure what will happen w my knee.

Keep working on strengthening the knee - I disagree with surgery inevitable. If it’s locking and getting worse then surgery will be needed but if it’s getting better then don’t rush into surgery

Im from NY and my doctor did the bare minimum on explaining to me the injury and how to go about strengthening it. I literally got no help or information on how to help myself. This video helped a lot, reminding me to continue working on my self despite the knee injury. I just have one question. Im about 1 1/2 months post mri/ diagnosis. How long will it take for my knee to atleast feel like its able to work at a higher capacity? Or how long should I wait until going back to the sports i love (skateboarding, golf, etc)

It’s a shame the Dr. didn’t give you more helpful, empowering information. It could be 3-9 months before you are able to return to those types of activities. Give it time and work on cycling, stretching, and improving walking in the mean time. If you want more guidance seek out a sports therapist that is into your sports.

You seem to have a grade 1 tear? Is that correct? The grade of the tear plays a major determing factor on weather or not someone requires surgery

5months back I had partial meniscus tear, after 1month of rest, i started with 5KM run. I used to run every weekend. One fine day the meniscus tear aggravated. Now back to d square one. I'm avoiding running, do not know when it will heal. pretty worried weather i'll back to my ole running days..An alternatinive to running is the best option like swimming, brisk walking...

It's only the innermost part of the meniscus which is avascular and thus has a lower chance of healing. So called 'white-white zone'. The outermost part ('red-red zone') has decent blood flow and a better chance of healing on its own. In between these is the 'red-white zone'. I tore my medial meniscus (a bucket handle tear, which ended up impinging my knee from full extension) last year and had an operation to repair it this February; read a little on the topic due to that. In more detail: _"Over the last two to three decades, great emphasis has been laid on meniscal repair and preservation. The aim is to preserve as much of the meniscus as possible and to avoid meniscectomy. To achieve this, the repair techniques have evolved substantially, with open meniscectomy becoming almost obsolete and arthroscopic techniques being developed consistently. Various arthroscopic techniques such as outside-in, inside-out, and all-inside have been extensively published, with all-inside and inside-out techniques being the most preferred by orthopedic surgeons around the globe [23]._ _The success of repair, however, depends on a range of factors, most importantly the location and type of the tear. The medial meniscus has its blood supply concentrated in the peripheral 20-30%, whereas the lateral meniscus is perforated by vessels in 10-25% of its periphery. The remainder 70-75% of both menisci receive their nutrition through diffusion in the absence of any direct arterial supply [31]. This has led to the classification of meniscal tears based on their relative location to the blood supply, building on the zonal classification of meniscal tears by Anderson et al. [32]. Tears located at the periphery or zone 1 are referred to as red-red (R/R) tears, tears located in the middle third or zone 2 are referred to as red-white (R/W) tears, and tears located in the inner third or zone 3 are referred to as white-white (W/W) tears [33]. The tears in zones with better blood supply, namely R/R and R/W, have significantly improved outcomes as opposed to tears in the W/W zone [31]. The morphology of the tears also play an important role in the healing, with horizontal or vertical tears having a success rate of up to 85% after surgery [34]. The systematic review by Nepple et al. also highlighted the possibility of lateral meniscus tears responding more favorably to repair as opposed to medial meniscus tears [23]. Re-tear rate for medial meniscus tears following a repair has been shown to be as high as 36.4% [35]."_

That is such an individual question. As I’m almost 50 years of age I go for a more cushioned shoe - Hoka is my personal choice

Hello Dr, I am 30yrs old and having grade 3 posterior horn of medial meniscus tear on my MRI, will it be fixed without surgery? I don't have any pain but when I bend my leg full while sitting then it gets locked.

I’m not a Dr. I’m a physiotherapist and coach. It’s difficult to say without assessing your knee. If there is mechanical locking and symptoms worsen then a surgical approach may be required.

hi brad, i had meiscus injury from last 1.5 year,some days with no pain and some days with pain,and when there is no pain then i thing i am okay now and will not face again, but when i try some exercise ang give weight on my knee then my pain starts and again same situation repeats,i tried cycling,i got relieg,mri told its grade one injury, please tell i have lots of expectations from you

Has anyone experienced pain from Patella Alta or problems with knee cap tracking?? Last year I lost 80lbs, and was absolutely loving being active again. But then the pain set in, and I’m almost unable to even walk any distance. Been told I will live with the pain and it will get worse with age (I’m 31). Had to give up my career dreams as I am unable to run:( Any advice or encouragement would help!!

No I haven’t had any knee surgery 7 years after first tore meniscus- I’ve had another setback since and applied same principles and it has settled well (in fact last weekend I ran a half marathon with no aggravation)

I WENT TO A PHYSIO AND ASKED HER IF SHE COULD FIX THE CARTILAGE...SHE STAYED SILENT...I FELT SHE WAS GOING TO CHEAT ME.....TAKE CHONDROITIN...I HAD THE SAME NOISE....I TOOK IT FOR LIKE 1-2 YEARS AND IT WAS GONE*

Well they make you do movements that can further ruin the healing. Has happened to a lot of my friends and I dont recommend them especially with ligaments and cartilage. @@TheRunExperience
