I’m going through the worst time of my life right now. I’m a postman who can’t walk! I’ve never been laid up for more than 2 weeks but now? Having to take STD for months and doing nothing but sleep+rehab has me questioning my whole life like nothing ever could. The reassurance I’ve taken from this video is leagues beyond anything I could articulate here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this!❤ I’m 2 sessions into what looks like 180 sessions till a hopefully full recovery. 3 months and counting. Wish me luck! Hello Please let me what you think, i’m terrified of surgery. I’m 60 years old MRI shows arthritis, in my lateral knee, and 😢bucket handle meniscus that’s needs surgery I’ve had too many episodes where I go three weeks without any praying and then I can get up from having dinner and then I feel a pulled muscle where I cannot move my leg, I eventually get it straightened, but it’s very painful to walk. What are steps to recovery after surgery? And I was told I was still having pain.

I’m 68 years old. Three years ago while bodyboarding I got hit by big wave on the side of my left knee. I had to crawl out of the surf and could barely move. Unfortunately I didn’t realize at the time that I had done some damage. I was a mountain biker, so after resting for a few weeks I got that on the bike. I bought a boarded a few more times, but it seem to aggravate my knee. I continued to hike and mountain bike. A year and a half ago. My husband had a shoulder injury and we stopped biking. I came off a hiking trail and the next day was in agony. My left knee had ballooned. My entire leg from the ankle to the thigh was black and blue. I went to the orthopedist and was diagnosed with complex meniscus tears, a burst baker cyst, and stage 2-4 osteoarthritis. I did PT for a week, but could hardly move my knee because of the fluid. I had some of it drained and continued sports PT. I had remarkable results with my left knee. Without any warning, my right knee ballooned. I continued PT, but it seem to worsen. An MRI showed complex meniscus tears, including a lateral. Also a lot of fluid and a bakers cyst. My knee would lock up in any movement planting my foot even picking my leg up to the side with send me through the roof! I have not gone back to PT yet because of family issues. I do have a stationary bike which I use and I am doing balance and stabilization exercises. It has gotten better. Thank you so much for a great explanation of not only the anatomy but possible outcomes. I urge anyone that feels that they’ve done some injury to their knees to get it checked ASAP. I believe I created more damage by waiting. Once you have OA there is no correction.

Deadlifts feel like they help... my injury happened end of August and I am still not back completely...I also refuse to see doctors and hospitals after 2020... so... hopefully it goes away soon with the exercises I can do to strengthen the muscles around the knee...

Thank you so much for the information. I think my meniscus journey started longback. I twisted my knee 12 years ago while training in martial arts. Didn’t pay much attention untill 1 year, I was young so I think it healed a bit but later the pain showed up. With consistent food, selfcare and change in lifestyle I got over it. Now iam in my 40ies. Last year I jumped around 7feet high cliff during a hike and my knee got swollen. It was worse. Based on ultra sound it was diagnosed as minor meniscus tear and minor Ligaments strain could have caused it. I followed the docs instructions. Took bed rest for 2 weeks followed by physio for 2 months. Didn’t find much improvement. I started going for massages and somehow the massages helped my muscles to relax and my leg to get better. After 11 months, I can walk, take medium hikes too with the knee. Only thing is can’t sit for more than 3hrs. My knee reminds me of the injury. Well this is not end of story😢 . My carelessness prompted me to do a hard hike . I went on this steep hike last Saturday and while coming back, for 3kms I made my knee struggle. I hurt my knee badly. Again the same swelling but the popping is intense this time, as if my knee is complaining. I could analyse myself that it’s lateral meniscus that’s hurting. One week bed rest and here I am watching this video carefully and attentively. If I took good care of myself last year and would have been cautious this wouldn’t have happened now. Dear friends, self care and self love is the first medication that we offer to ourselves. I am strongly determined now that I will care for my knee and I will get rid of this soon. ❤

Bucket handle injury is no joke. My knee got stuck suddenly while doing something very simple. It was impossible to straighten my knee without surgery. I am happy that it was repaired, but I am afraid to go back to martial arts. I don't know what caused it, but I bet it was my years of jiu jitsu (a lot of crazy movements).

It’s the worst when you don’t know exactly what caused the tear. I tore my hip labrum by unknown means and now I’m too afraid to go back to riding horses because the injury derailed my life for ten years (nobody diagnosed it and thought I was making the pain up because there was no instigating moment of onset).

This is the best information I have found and matches so accurately with my experience. I am in week 9 and while it fluctuates from day to day I feel I am 80% better. The information about movement and the nourishment of the muniscus thru Synovial fluid is very important. I feel like modest movement is better than just sitting and not moving. "Synovial fluid is a thick fluid with an egg-white-like consistency that lubricates and reduces friction between joints. When synovial fluid is low, which tends to happen with age, it can contribute to joint stiffness and other aging-related joint conditions like osteoarthritis." Thanks you so much!

Great video, thanks! I tripped on a kerb in September last year. My right knee started to click in November. I had 6 physio sessions via my employer but they thought it wasn’t a meniscal tear because I had too much movement in the knee and there was no swelling. An X-ray showed mild OA changes and pseudo gout (I’m 63, male, previous spinal surgeries, on the heavy side and already use a walking stick :) Anyhow was taken to hospital by ambulance 2 weeks ago in quite a lot of pain. MRI showed lateral meniscus tear. I’ve been off sick from work since November (I’m a UK-based mental health nurse). The recent flare-up appears to have subsided and the orthopaedic consultant wants to see me again in June. I’m going to go back to work if my boss agrees and engage with physiotherapy. I just hope the delay in diagnosis won’t hinder my recovery. Thanks again.

I tore my lateral meniscus mid February. At first, I couldn't walk up stairs at all, it was way too painful. Two weeks after I tore it I started walking more, stretching and going on an exercise bike eventually. Now three months later, I've been at rugby training twice a week and I've also play in a few games, one been the full game. I also participate in the scrum as I play lock and I haven't really had any issues, my knee just feels a little "off" sometimes but I haven't had much pain at all, mainly discomfort. I tore my meniscus while running on a treadmill preparing myself for rugby season. When I was on the treadmill, I was feeling unstable but I kept pushing and increasing the speed until I stepped too hard and tore my meniscus. I got a sharp pain, but I could walk quite fine but I couldn't even lift my leg up to put in on the side of the treadmill. This happened after I just after trained legs so my muscles were fatigued. Learn from my mistakes and rest if you have too, it's much better than having an injury that will probably linger for the rest of your life. I've been too afraid to squat and I'll probably wait a few months until I try.

It has been 10 months since I tore my meniscus and sprained ACL. I wear compression and still had to go to work as a teacher. Swelling went down and I start to feel much better...and then I feel awful again. Probably over doing it. Then I begin to heal again...and now I'm on my second "flare up." I got up off a low couch one day and felt injured again shortly after. Probably the twisting motion. This video makes a lot of sense. Once the pain stops, I begin to resume my "normal" activity level...and that irritates it again. This is going to be a long healing journey.I'm wondering why after 10 months, I'm still not all the way back to my regular level of activity. I'm 58. Thank you for making this video.

Hey yall, I’ve had this injury for 12 months now, and have been doing conservative treatment, including injections. Initially my thoughts were definitely meniscus injury, and many of the physical tests were positive. Only because my images didn’t show anything significant, I was mistreated for itbs. Now, I have surgery in two weeks for arthroscopy because I met with a specialist surgeon, and he thinks because of no success with conservative treatments, and him noticing some weird things on my images, he thinks the surgical route is the next step. I will update in two weeks lol

But I didn’t do any exercise for years and when I started again the pain came back in a week. After some research I think actually could be meniscus or ligaments injury. Hello doc! Ive been dealing with this for years. It'll sometimes lock and swell for weeks during wrestling matches. First ortho thought I had "snapping bicep femoris" now after a MRI they think is lateral discoid meniscus. MRI doesn't show torn, but if its not torn why does my leg lock out and leave me needing physical therapy for weeks? And after one lock out its way more likely to lock the first month after injury.

In most cases like this, working on really strengthening the knee slowly over time is the best solution. At the start you may find that you have to use very light weights and restrict the range of motion you work through but this then slowly improves over several months.

I'm getting there too. Just had mine done 6 weeks ago and I can't tell what direction I'm going. I've hit a wall and haven't gotten back to normal yet despite moving it, stretching it and trying to do PT exercises.

Mine is triggering the pain when doing long ride cycling especially climbing many uphill, but the pain subside after 2-3 days, i do cyling everyday, 30 minutes daily and 50-60 kilometers once a week with many climb, it is were the pain trigger
@SportsInjuryPhysioАй бұрын
I would then look at what your pedal/cleats set-up is and what you do with your feet and legs during those rides - see if you can identify something that places more strain on the outer knee.

I think I tore my lateral meniscus in my left knee over 10 years ago while playing basketball and I never got it looked at. I still feel pain till this day. When I play basketball my left knee feels weaker than normal. If affects my movement and jump shot. I also feel it when I walk at times.

Hello! I hope you are doing well. I recently got my MRI results, and it mentioned a grade 3 tear at the posterior horn of the medial meniscus. The report also states that the ACL is not adequately seen. There's no joint effusion. I'm quite worried and hesitant about surgery. Can this be fixed through physiotherapy and a knee immobilizer? I really want to explore alternatives to surgery. Your insights would mean a lot to me during this challenging time. Thanks in advance for your help.

My issue is on the inside of my knee. Do you have a video for medial tears. I did look but couldn’t find one. I have already had a meniscus surgery repair, approximately 6 years ago. The same knee is now giving me terrible pain when walking and also when not using it. The pain is very sharp at times but always there to some degree. It is difficult to get comfortable in bed as if my knee flops to the side the pain is awful. I am a female-64 years of age and normal daily activity but no workouts or gym. Thank you

Thank you, Maryke, for your kind research and knowledge. I have a popping sound in the left knee that developed into horrid pain and difficulties bending and standing on the knee. Would you recommend a knee support sleeve together with exercise?
@SportsInjuryPhysio4 ай бұрын
Knee supports are a bit hit and miss for this type of thing - some people find them very useful while others don't really benefit. Just be careful of a sleeve - if your knee is very swollen that can cut the circulation off. So it must not be too tight or a better option is often to use something that fastens with velcro so you can adjust the fit more easily - I discuss it in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mneWd2lrerN9nNU

Hello doctor . Have you made a video on fat pads? Apparently I have a large tear through my “Hoffas fat pad” . Fortunately no ligaments or meniscus according to MRI. Does hoffas fat pad have similar recover time as meniscus ? I look at these videos because they’re near the same area.

Hello doctor, I am 21yo. Based on the MRI reports of my knee, would surgery be necessary for the following findings: 1) Horizontal tear of body-posterior horn of medial meniscus. 2) Type 2 signal in anterior and anterior horn of lateral meniscus. 3) Complete tear of medial patellar retinaculum. 4) Mild lateral deviation of patella. 5) Mild marrow edema with impacted fracture in lateral femoral condyle and medial patellar facet. 6) Mild knee joint effusion.

I can't answer that - you need to ask your doctor - it depends on more than just scan results.

7 weeks ago my left knee locked. Hospital gave me some drugs to straighten it out and put a mechanical brace on it for 6 weeks. MRI says I have a small tear. Now brace is off and sports support is one and feels good. Am waiting for the UK NHS report before physio, but as i dont walk far but cycle a bit, is 7 weeks a good time to start doing some strength exercise (i have been stretching it within the confines of the brace). Havent had a shower in 6 weeks because of this mechanical support!!!

Rehab exercises are usually started within 5 days of sustaining a meniscus tear so I really don't think you have to wait for any reports before you go and see your physio. I would suggest that you speak to your doctor and get physio organised asap.

Thank you so much for your information. I don't know if i have a meniscus tear or not but the symptoms are exactly of meniscus tear and it happened when i fell from my bed and my knee hit the tile on the ground. My knee then started to swell up and i couldn't even bend my knee it's been almost 4 months and i almost fine but i can't stop suddenly while running or walking cause it hurts my leg for a while and i can not walk properly then in winters i can feel more pain while twisting my leg more often. Hope if you can help me with this 😢

You say a good dose of treatment first rather than surgery, how do you measure what is good dose of treatment. I am still recovering from a PCL surgery, 6mths after the operation I still cannot walk without pain. RA too has now set in, any suggestions for recovery.
@SportsInjuryPhysio5 ай бұрын
It's difficult to make sensible suggestions without actually having an in depth conversation and understanding all the factors affecting your recovery. But in your case low load, repetitive movement may be a good option e.g. cycling as it improves the knee's circulation and movement +++ without the impact.

Impresion:-Lateral meniscus posterior horn tear near the root attachment with meniscal flap projecting in the intercondylar notch. An additional posterior horn lateral meniscus tear is noted in the peripheral third. Intact femorotibial articular cartilage and medial meniscus. Will this tear heal?
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
I can't answer that, but usually the best thing to do is not to worry about it and start doing your rehab. If you find that you are improving continue rehab, but if you find that you don't improve, then consider other options.

Had an ACL reconstruction and lateral meniscus repair surgery in the last wk of May this year. Watched quite a few of your videos since the 1st week of the surgery, they are really helpful! Thanks. I have a question hope you can answer: Started the physio sessions 7 wks after the surgery. In the days before the PT, I used to feel some pain around the lateral meniscus, and had non-frequent poppings and they were slightly painful. Now it's been more than 6 weeks already and I still have popping around the lateral meniscus, but "painless". The PT says it's normal to have them but I'm not sure about that because I think the scar tissues should have gone already. What do you think?
@SportsInjuryPhysio4 ай бұрын
First, your physio is correct - pain-free popping is not a problem. Second, scar tissue does not cause popping. And third, scar tissue also does not go away - it remains and becomes part of the tissue. People give scar tissue a bad name cause they like to blame if for anything and everything that goes wrong but it is actually an integral part of how things heal and get strong again - I've had it on my list for a long time to discuss scar tissue - think it is time to make that video :)

My knee feels numb and dull on the middle outer part of the knee cap what would you recommend. I've rested a month then after a mri the doc said nothing was torn so I went for a jog on a snowy trail (great cushion) had a few pains but figured it was due to no activity for the previous 3-4 weeks I rested it but then went back to work and could hardly walk (wearhouse standing 10+hrs lots of bending small shuffle steps amazon) then did nothing to be able to work the next week after having 3 days off resting and couldn't even make it through a 40 hr week. I'm not one to complain either typically I work 60 hrs a week and climb 14k ft peaks on a regular basis. Life now is depressing. Please anyone what do you think is wrong? Any suggestions hobbies that would make me happy again since I can't climb.... I'm depressed please give me input... thanks

I have a friend who has been receiving PRP injections in both knees. His left knee is doing well but his right knee appears to have Baker's cyst issues. Could the Baker's cyst problem be directly related to the inflammation caused by the PRP injection?
@SportsInjuryPhysio8 ай бұрын
PRP is not meant to cause such a significant inflammatory reaction, so it is more likely to be down to the initial injury. But the doctor should be able to cast more light on this.

Hi thankyou for the information provided, I am having the same pain that you are showing in the video part 3:13. This pain comes and goes. It happend again while I was just standing and somthing unusual came into the knee with a pop and that cause difficulty in standing usually I wait for another pop that adjust my knee again, but why does it happens again and again.
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
Sometimes there is something loose in the knee and it just catches in the wrong position - then you can't really place weight through it because it pinches but when you move the joint a bit, the thing goes back into place and you can go again. Often it is a tear in the meniscus that folds back on itself.

I got today the recommendation to do surgery for medial meniscus tears, I'm so freaking sad about it. I tried conservative therapy for 6 to 8 months and I improved a lot, but apparently not enough. Also, I feel a little bit stupid because I'm not sure if I ruined my own recovery by getting too greedy and comfortable, I went from not being able to walk and not being able to do a squat, to biking 60 km and squatting 100 kg (this is the part that worries me, maybe I ego lifted and screwed up my recovery) Anyways, too late for regretting, hope to be soon doing my sports again and having my life. Strong hug to everybody going through this injury, we will recover our lifes :)

So I have 0 pain unless I’m going up or downstairs. My injury happened cause I scooted sideways while washing my car and I ran into my bike rack on the lateral side of my left knee. At first it hurt but nothing insane. Now it’s a week later and it’s still hurting. It seems like the pain is coming from LCL or meniscus or both. I really can’t tell. I can still do a pistol squat on my left leg and have slight discomfort in my knee but going downstairs is really where I notice the pain. Any help is appreciated
@SportsInjuryPhysioАй бұрын
So, if you can still do a pistol squat we can at least say that nothing serious has been injured and your leg is nice and strong. Whatever you injured is likely just pretty bruised and irritated and should calm down within around 4 to 6 weeks if you just try and adapt your movements to avoid irritating it for a while to allow it to settle. Doesn't sound like you need rehab for your case at this moment in time.

Is there need for surgery for a small radial tear in the white zone. No pain etc, will this inevitable get worse over time now that the rear has begun?
@SportsInjuryPhysio10 ай бұрын
The current advice is that if you have full function without pain, surgery is not required because surgery carries its own risks and may cause your knee to actually get arthritis earlier than if you didn't have surgery. Also, there really isn't any evidence that a tear like that will get worse without surgery.

Hi Doc, had a lateral meniscus tear 2018. Was undiagnosed until 2021. I got a trim in 2021, i hadnt done much exercise between then and now. After getting back into exercise the last 3 months i seem to have torn it again. I am wondering if conservative treatment is still viable in a 2nd tear? Im also 30kg overweight (130kg, 6ft tall) which obviously doesnt help. So my real question is, would losing weight and conservative treatment be viable for a 2nd tear looking in a vacuum?
@SportsInjuryPhysio5 ай бұрын
Yes, it doesn't matter if it is a second tear, conservative treatment is the first step. Losing weight can make a huge difference to knee injuries, so putting effort into that is definitely useful.
