How I Seal My Paintings, Finish The Sides and Clean My Brushes 🖌️🎨

I always varnish with a piece of old t-shirt and very thin coats. No air bubbles, no brushes to clean. I store the cloth in a zip lock bag with a few sprays from a water bottle to keep the cloth moist and can varnish multiple layers for a few days. Best technique I have ever used. I can’t even tell you how many of my first paintings I ruined trying to varnish them.

To clean my brushes I use hot water and a gentle bar soap. I rinse it out scrub the brush on the soap bar several times and re soap every time after until the brush is clean. I was taught this way in art school and it works with oils or acrylics. I then dry the brush tip on a cloth to reshape the brush and tip. I always use a sandlewood type soap because I love the smell and I have had my brushes more than twenty-five years. There may be colors on the handles but the brush part is soft and supple.

Joni your paintings are so amazing. Is there a video of the tree with deep sides & the one with a window and flowers? And is there a specific place to get the Gambar varnish? I think that's the varnish I need. I have ruined many paintings trying to varnish using masters touch, it's super thick and does not spread well at all. Liquitex I am hit or miss with it. Great video. Do you varnish all your paintings? Can you use spray varnish? What black paint are you using to paint the sides? Does that varnish leaves any streaky lines?

Thanks! No streaks, I’m using craft paint for sides but you can use any acrylic paint. I don’t paint all my pieces, it’s purely cosmetic technically not necessary😉

Varnishing is purely cosmetic (looks pretty) technically it’s not necessary for oil or acrylic paintings.

Does this formula work for brushes that have dried paint in them? I'm horrible at letting paint get fry on my brushes. As a result, I have a cazillion brushes. I ruin one, I get another.

Wait at least 24 hrs for acrylic paintings and oil takes much longer. Your painting has to be absolutely 💯 dry before applying sealer or varnish. 😊

Hi Joni: For paint I use Grumbacher academy and Masters touch. For my varnish I use Liquitex Basic gloss varnish. I always wait at least 2 weeks to varnish but still paint smears. 🤷‍♀️
