Thanks for this. My dad was a cutter back in the late 70s thru the 80s and filed without one of those guages. We cut our last tree together in my front yard and then a month later, he passed. Needless to say, he would never let me file his saw, even at 35 yo. Anyway, he passed, i have his Husq 455 rancher. I have been intimidated to file the chain since he passed, because he always said if you dont know what your doing, you can hurt yourself. I just been buying a new chain and keeping the dull ones around since i knew they can be sharpened. He love cutting wood for heating his house. I enjoyed watching him work the saw. As bad as his health was, he seemed to lose 20 years everytime he cranked this sucker up. Anyway, thank you for the instructional video and for the moment, taking me back to some awesome memories i had with him.

I will be 18 in a few months! My father and mother walked out on me at 6 months. Grandpa never has taught me how to sharpen a chainsaw. Thanks you for this video! You have made impressions on many young men. Although they may not all say it, is fatherless boys appreciate you!

Tim, you file just like my daddy did. All the actions , everything. If I turned off the sound it would have been days past, thank you.

I have been watching these "sharpening" videos for a year now, and this is without any doubt whatsoever, the absolutely BEST VIDEO on the subject. Cotontop3, you are a great help to me and to us all.

That's pretty much the same way I've done it for the last forty years and it's worked fine for me.

The drags are actually a depth gauge. You hit em too hard with the file and your saw tries to cut too deep, that’s where you get the “jump” of the saw. I hit mine every 3 sharpenings. If you don’t file them, your saw can be sharp as hell but it won’t bite into the wood.

Your video made me think of schoolshop days-learned to sharpen from the instructor there.Circular saw blades. From 7" to 18".The angle you use is the same as for the saw blades.except ripsaw blades-those you file the teeth straight across. The teacher said for circular ripsaws-"chisels on a wheel"Then sharpened the same way years later at a tool repair

Great video, One additional tip about a file is never drag a file back, (in a sawing motion ) the file is designed to just cut in one direction , If you drag it back it flattens the cutters on the file and ruins it. Thanks Bp .

My father taught me how to build houses, fix cars, airplanes and boats. I taught myself to put a bar in a vice, use the guide and keep using the chain I filed. Thanks Dad and thank you Sir for all the guys who didn't have a Dad that could save the world.

I feel the same way about sharpening- one side is easier than the other! I grew up on Stihl saws, and still have my first 036 that I bought about 20 years ago. Thanks for the video!!

Great video! Have been getting into chainsaw cutting myself recently, I inherited the files that you used but had no clue how to use them or even knew what there true purpose was. Thanks for showing me the proper use of the files it means a lot to Me! If you get a chance and you haven't already made some felling technique videos showing your methods Tim I would definitely love to see them. Thanks Tim and keep up the good work!

I cannot play a guitar, but I sure can play a chainsaw. One of my favorite things is to make that machine sing. Ever find yourself listening to a neighbor run a saw and think, "they don't know how to run that saw" or "that chain must be dull as can be" or" they know what they are doing with that saw". Out in the country, I know of a little old lady, 85 years old, who still cuts her own firewood; sometimes while sitting in my treestand I think to myself, "She puts me to shame on a saw." Go on out and make your saw sing to you Tim and thanks for the videos.

Hey ct3 , at a young age I got taught to sharpen the saw but not with file guide or any point in time. That’s something everyone should know how to do it. They need to learn to sharpen ,maintain , and cut.
