Hello John, Sharpening such knives has always been a problem for me. Thank you for this nice useful information. I will try this. And now my knives will be sharpened. Thanks again for showing the details. (I admired that sharpening tool) nice content. See you. I wish you have a nice weekend. Big greetings. Take care, my friend.

I have the Record power machine and have access to the top of the range Tormek one at the college where I work. What I will say is that the Tormek spills water the same as the Record, where it scores is the adjustable up and down of the water tray. The cost was a lot of money whereas the Record one which I got direct from Record power on eBay was cheap as chips. For the difference in cost which was several hundred pounds its not much better or may I say worth it either. With regards the jig to sharpen planer blades, I think I will stick to a wooden block with angled cuts and run them over some wet and dry paper on my planer bed. It works very well and costs just a scrap of wood and some paper. Very good vid and if you can afford the attachment it can be a good investment, certainly better than sending them off to be reground at a specialist.

(former tormek owner) - an unbelievably expensive and slow solution. if there is considerable wear on the knives, I can't imagine waiting for the tormek - for three knives. it's slow even grinding hand plane irons, which is why I am a former owner and not a current owner.

Instead of going back and forth you should do complete passes one at a time. Just go from one side to the other then lift the jig. With slow, consistent passes you'll get an even grind without oversharpening the belly. Extra important with knives.
@AdamNiddrie
@AdamNiddrie 5 ай бұрын
With this jig it is impossible to over sharpen the belly as you suggest. The blade runs along a jig guide giving a maximum removal of material along the entire length of the blade. When any given part of the blade reaches that limit it will simply ,as is known in the saw doctor world , spark out that section until the rest of the blade catches up. During this spark out period the movement back and forth will actually refine the edge to best the edge can possibly become. Reducing any kind of machinery chatter marks and reducing the effort required to hone the blade at completion

@AdamNiddrie Knife Grinders AU has a video demonstrating how wrong you are. You can end up with an oversharpened belly, effectively turning your knife into a recurve blade, lol. If the stone were a lot wider, you might not have the problem. But if the stone were a lot wider, the machine wouldn't be able to sharpen recurves or blades with sweeping curves. At least, not with a simple jig.

questions: how fast does it remove deep chips in the blade? (like from a nail) how fast is a blade sharpened in generell (without a chip) how straight is the blade afterwards, comparable to a new one?

Nice video thanks, but it would have been better if you explained the circular adjusting nuts with numbers on them on the two mounting posts are used to adjust the sliding jig so it is exactly parallel to the grinding wheel. If they are not used there is a risk the newly ground edge will not be parallel to the back referance edge of the blade.

Now that you have some experience with this machine setup, do you find that you are able to grind the planer knives perfectly straight so that pieces run through the machine come out at the identical thickness, no matter which portion of the knife did the cutting?

I am struggling with this jig, because the planer knives I have are not quite as tall as yours. Therefore I am unable to actually have the edge touch the stone at any angle. Does anyone have suggestions?

Hey John, no offence. But it would have been smart to save the planer blades when you bought new ones. That way once you got this setup you could have sharpened all the blades. And that's the advice if give anyone in that situation. If you buying new blades for your planer. And there's a chance you might get a setup to sharpen then at some point. Save your blades so you can sharpen then all. And recoup some of your money. Just my thoughts. Thanks for another great video.

That jig is over 200e which could give me 4-5 of brand new sets to keep me going for 2 years. Just wondering if there is anyone in Ireland who can professionally sharpen blades in County Kildare preferably. Would rather pay someone who knows what he is doing than myself ruining blades 😆

Its HSS steel why would someone be using coolant ? water is absolutely all that is needed, there is no carbide nor stellite that would require extra coolant or non corrosive coolant with the water?Great video mate but maybe best not to mention things that are not necessary with the material you are working with so as not to confuse beginners thinking they need coolant when they dont. Or it maybe a conversation piece to elaborate in your video the differences , however be prepared for the many natural and synthetic options available if you choose that path and the extra time it would add to a simple video.
