Ahah the trickiest part of the whole scenario is braving the act of just using the flash since it's such an unknown at first! Once you've got the hang of it it's easy peasy, I'll come show ya someday ;)

one of my first workshops at school was strobe photography on analog medium format and i really wanted to try this kind of lighting and never got it the way i wanted it to look and this motivated me to try again!! love the shots of the look book too, and so interesting to know that you metered the inside a bit higher to create contrast
@willysheepskin20 күн бұрын
You should definitely have another crack at it! Once you've got the metering aspect down and are confident in the strobe it's just about experimenting a bit until you figure out a way that works, then you can just roll with that! The right modifiers help a bunch too, like a white shoot through umbrella can be super versatile and a lot less of a headache than an octabox haha!

Hey could you tell me how you meter your shots? Im really struggling with that right now. do I overexpose a stop and then meter for the shadows when I shoot portra 400 and 800 ? would help me out a lot
@willysheepskin16 күн бұрын
Hiya Rob, I aim for like half a stop to a stop over always pretty much and that's about it really, the rest of the process is just feeling it out and deciding when to split the difference between highlights and shadow! I'm not very scientific about it for the most part these days, I just go with what feels right since I've shot mostly the same stock for like 9 years now and have a good feeling for how things should be exposed. Always aiming for at least a bit over is the main thing!

@pizzaface2816 күн бұрын
I have a question about the navy blue sky. Is it only the fast synchronization time (overpowering the sun) with medium format + film that is responsible for this effect, or did you use extra a polarizing filter?
@willysheepskin16 күн бұрын
No polarizing filter! Was just the shooting at like f/16 or f/22 that darkened it down and resulted in the color shift!

What film back are you using? Mine crapped out and I'm not sure which back to get for my pro s, like should i get the same or get that weird motorized 6x8?
@willysheepskin12 күн бұрын
I have the Pro SD and used to use it with that back, it's my favorite back for the RB when it's working ahah! In this Video I was using the Pro S backs. The motorized ones are fun, I actually made a video trying them out once, the title was something like "turning an RZ67 into an RB67", but I don't dig 6x8 really and adding electronics to a mechanical camera feels like asking for trouble haha. I reckon the Pro S back or Pro SD depending on the price difference should sort you out!
@subtletherapy10 күн бұрын
@@willysheepskin Ok! I was afraid of getting the same pro-s back in case it would crap out again, basically the film counter doesn't advance anymore which confuses the whole mechanism when trying to advance the film. But if the pro-sd back works with the pro-s back, then I'll try to get that one then. Rather invest more money to ensure that something is more reliable then cheap out. Thanks for the tip!

I put out a video recently where I spoke about it a a bit, but I spend a lot of time compiling references in folders that I can revisit at a later date - the video is called " New gear, a cool photobook and some workflow things" !
@Todd_Kuhns20 күн бұрын
From a business standpoint, could you explain why you shot film? I mean, you scan them and heavily retouch the digital file anyway, why not save the cost of film and time involved and just shoot digital in the first place? You can make a digital image look like film if that is the desired look........
@willysheepskin19 күн бұрын
A very reasonable question! I think the point you make regarding scanning and retouching being similar to shooting digitally is a bit reductive though. To a certain degree you can make things look alike, especially with 35mm and the more grungy film look.I actually made a video recently doing just that, but I have yet to find a way to truly match the rendering of a 6x7 medium format film camera paired with a Hasselblad scanner. That's having used the Phaseone, Hasselblad, and Fuji Medium format digital systems, and working for years as a retoucher and color matching film and digital things. A large part of my process is also darkroom printing things to use as color reference and part of my portfolio, and there are certain effects and color tweaks one can do in the darkroom that also can't be replicated digitally - yet, haha! Hope that makes sense, I'm down with digital and film and happy to use whichever format depending on the need and client, but if the choice is down to me and I have the option to shoot film I'll always shoot film for the sake of being able to make use of the darkroom down the line!
@Todd_Kuhns18 күн бұрын
@@willysheepskin Alright, thanks for the insight.

I find that 80mm lenses aren’t suitable for closeup portraits due to the resulting distortion. People don’t notice that right away if the model is attractive, because beautiful faces can take a lot of distortion before losing their attractiveness.
@willysheepskin21 күн бұрын
To each their own hey! I really enjoy the rendering of the 90mm rb lens for fashion things, I do tend to use the 250mm for more formal portraits but that's mainly cus I like the compression it gives. Thanks so much for checking out the video!
