I started my beginners silversmith class today and was so discouraged, I cried in the car after the 4 hour class. I go back tomorrow for another 4 hours and because of you and a couple of very uplifting girls in my class, I am going to go back, and I am determined. I guess sometimes it's not the actual teachers, but the good people on the sidelines that make you realize you are capable...i really thank you for this video! It was nothing against the teacher but I just felt rushed and so out of the moment and I had random strangers in my class of 5 people giving me hope and cheering me on. As much as I was discouraged, I was encouraged to try again.

In most of my favourite courses I've ever done it was my fellow students that made the experience great. Don't give up! You may have just made some great friends. I'm also a slow worker and hate the feeling of being rushed, so I can relate to what you're saying.
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing3 жыл бұрын
You are more than capable, sweetheart! It always takes time, we all stryggle in the beginning, regardless what we do, and this jewelry maiing technique is one of the hardest, so don't be hard on yourself! 😊🙏 Give yourself time to try enough times to know if this is for you or not. You don't have to be good from day one. You can try, experiment, learn and most importantly - have fun! Don't give up too fast. Like J J said too, I myself hate being rushed, judged too quickly and I also hate negative "motivation". Use the class to learn and work at your own pace. You'll do great!

I love that necklace so much that I wanted to build one just like it I started watching videos on KZbin on how to make certain necklaces and they settled on a Cuban link and I used a quarter pound of gold I Purchased all the tools rolling mills torches everything $25,000 worth of tools Pepe Tools Rio Grande Epsie and others inspired me to make That replacement necklace and I made it with a locking clasp.

Wow!! Soo encouraging for us newbs.. especially old newbs like myself. Lol It’s still possible. I started a year ago playing with wire and really want to jump into cutting my own copper, soldering, torching.. I even purchased everything for Electroforming jewelry simply because I fell in love with the pieces I’d been seeing, but with little to no knowledge of construction. There are no kinds of classes right now, due to Covid, so I’m stuck with tutorials for now. Thank you for stressing the point that everyone works at their own pace, and progresses at different times/ some more lucky than others just having a natural knack. It’s so hard to look at social media and see others who are also only a year in or so remotely ever touching wire beforehand and are light years from my skill level. 😢 It’s so hard to not compare, although I know I shouldn’t. It genuinely stops my progression. I need more videos like this! Thank you for sharing your journey and congratulations on your success! Your rose quartz set at the end was beautiful!!!😍😍💚

i started doing jewellery since i was always good with resin and metal crafts so i decided to learn as a hobby now i can do solder and cast jewellery pretty well although my solder skills leave something to be desired since every now and again i mess up a joint but iv found ladies and gents if you just keep on trying you will improve. plus i have 3 craftsman in my family and 2 are metalworkers so it has been nice having someone to ask for help which is a good idea if you don't know something ask someone with knowledge on the subject it doesn't hurt to ask a fellow human every now and again for assistance trust me it makes life easier and most craftsmen and jewellers are really nice people i didn't know why my project kept going wrong i asked a social group im in got response in 20min people are always happy to help such a nice community

Totally agree! There are amazing groups on facebook, on reddit and Instagram, honestly a lot of great people happy to help fellow makers :)) Sometimes there's a bad apple here and there that will try to drag someone down, but let's not pay attention to them. This should be about having fun and loving the craft! 😍❤

I legit came here to find out how to make jewellery. I didn’t expect it to be so high tech. This is like the very beginning. I’m interested though. Love learning back from the start. I actually prefer learning how to make my own charms rather than buying them to make jewellery.

Hi Jamie! That's awesome you're learning how to make jewellery. Check out my other videos, I think some of them might very useful. I make tutorials, how-to videos, ones about tools, and I also recommend learning resources. And then there's vlogs too haha :)

This was just the video I needed to see. I'm in Scotland myself and I have a lot of health issues that have stopped me working since I left school. I had no dream career other than one and due to some MH issues of mine, it will likely never happen. I got really into body jewellery around 20. I'd seen these brands that made solid gold body jewellery and I became very passionate about wearing it and generally became passionate about gemstones and jewellery in the process. I flat out am obsessive, could talk about it for hours every day(and do!). Everyone has said I should work in the jewellery industry but again, with my issues I shut it down. It's just not possible with my problems, its too late for me at my age(now 27) etc. I'd been screwed over by a couple of jewellers last year and wanted to become one myself so that it would stop happening but I felt it was just not possible. The very same week, I'd just followed an independent jeweller from Scotland and found that he had only started a few years ago, just went to a ring making class etc. He is well known in the piercing circles so his business is flourishing in such a short period, it felt like destiny that I stumbled across this info at a time when I felt so low about my likelihood of succeeding. I found a ring making class in my city, I went to it, which took a lot for me to do, but was so happy I managed it! I made a ring and I was absolutely delighted at how much I enjoyed learning how to do it. I knew THIS is the way to go for me. Self employed, Etsy probably. I could work at my own pace in my own home. I bought all the tools, the books, even a bench for in my flat(though its still not put up). I was planning on doing an 8 week course with the place I did the 1 day one. Unfortunately the pandemic put a spanner in the works, and my mental health deteriorated a lot. I had not lost the desire to do it, but I felt hopeless again. In comes this video being recommended to me. I felt all the things you spoke about feeling and it's so wonderful to see how you have flourished. I feared initially you were saying you went to school for it when you were talking about loving jewellery at such a young age but to find out you too, went the self taught route with books tools and passion, is just what I needed to hear. This video has got me some of my hope and motivation back. Thank you for sharing your story!

@no 💭 Wow, your story and mine are very similar in ways. I had an awful time worrying and self doubting during this pandemic. In my case I did finish an art degree although after university I have been spinning aimlessly for a good while searching through all sort of jobs or wondering what is wrong with me, it made me feel so worthless. School doesn’t always help you decide or make you feel prepared for the future. I have been taking the self taught path too in the hope I can finally prove my worth, it is not an easy path but hopefully in the end it’s worth it. I send you big hugs and strenght to help you carry on, I also wish you the best of luck and all your dreams to come true, hang in there! Thank you for sharing your story too🤲💖🙏

@@nemesixsis Thank you so much! School is very often not what it's cracked up to be. I mean, if I'd had any idea I could go into jewellery, I might have been interested in it at a young age, but the arts and crafts classes never broached the subject! I feel that kind of wistful feeling where if it had been introduced to me at a younger age, I'd be in a completely different place, life wise. But hey, at least we know now. The passion is there, the motivation may waver but we can do it! We just have to keep remembering "even if I feel bad now, maybe tomorrow I can try!" and never let that optimism fade. I say this after years and years of just giving up and feeling miserable because with my health its hard to be consistent at things so keeping a routine is hard. A routine is kinda vital to learning! But I had to realise, to try one day and maybe not another, is better than nothing at all! There's some great youtube channels to help us grow too. Without them god knows what I'd do. Reading doesn't get me very far, so the videos are vital for me personally. I wish you strength and the best of luck too.

Thank you so much for sharing this with me, with us! I think a lot of people will be able to relate to you and your story. I can feel a strong connection myself. School is one of the ways, NOT the only way! If you, because of your circumstances, require different path, that's ok and that only means you might need to invest some time into extra research. But it's worth to craft your journey specifically for yourself, and keep moving forward 🌺❤ And to remember that things take time and it's ok to go slowly. It's actually even better. And girl, you're 4 years younger than me! You have so much time ahead of you 😀 I've started with smithing when I was your age. My business became professional and picked up a pace about a year ago, when I hit 30. It's NEVER too late 😊 Do what makes you happy. Don't put any pressure on yourself - just make sure that you have fun. Without comparing yourself to others. Everyone does things in their own time. I hope that helps a little. Take care!

Thank you for the pep talk. I did a silversmith course a couple of years ago and loved it. But thought I was a bit old to go through with an apprenticeship. Like you, I got into beaded jewellery bead weaving to be more precise. This has made me think again. Thank you. I'm going to start saving for my equipment. I've subscribed to your channel.
