@RAmjad
@RAmjad 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, that sounds good already. You want to also make sure you are covering the right pieces of content which are the topics you find the hardest. I think the fastest way would be to keep asking yourself the question, "if the exam were tomorrow, what topic would I be least happy about?" During GCSE and A-level, this often helped me revise the topics I often hated but ended up coming up in the exam. It really saved me some marks. By doing that, you will already be outperforming a lot of students who just revise whatever they feel like. Try to ask yourself that question, cover that topic, check that you understand it well with some topic questions that you can find online and then repeat this for the another topic. But you may have to revisit that difficult topic more than once to make sure it really sticks and it can be helpful to use the technique outlined in this video to help you do this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGjSYWyXbNlniKM I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions

Do you have any tips regarding time management? It’s probably the area I struggle most with and when seeing a Cambridge student such as yourself claim not to have been able to finish some of the further maths paper it really has me worried.
@RAmjad
@RAmjad 4 жыл бұрын
I assume you mean for exams. The further maths one was a difficult one, more difficult than many of my teachers expected. I think it's because it was the first year of exams for that specification and they were seeing how far they can push students and knew the grade boundaries would just adjust accordingly if it was too hard. But this was AQA further maths, my friends who did Edexcel had an easier time in theirs whereas some other Cambridge students who did AQA further maths agreed that paper was tight on time. I think the grade boundaries reflected this because it was 216 / 300 for an A* (72%) and 175 / 300 for an A (58.3%) for AQA further maths. But the biggest problem for me with exams is the sunk cost fallacy (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunk_cost) I would struggle with a question for too long, even though I was getting no where, rather than cutting my losses and moving on. It's especially easy to do for hard questions in further maths which feel like they're just in your reach but you can't quite get it. I go into a bit more detail about time management in my A-level exam technique video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2q2l6iLi5mMd6s

Hi, sorry, I should have mentioned in the video that I wasn't too concerned with how long I spent per day, as long as I was getting the tasks done that I wanted to get done that day, I was happy. It's about revising effectively during the hours you do rather than how many hours you are racking up. As for the many sources, I honestly don't know 😅 some websites had some nice diagrams but really bad explanations and others had the opposite. Some took a few minutes to read whereas others took almost an hour. I think I was trying to combine the best parts of all sources in my own source. But I know this isn't feasible for those who don't have enough time to do it

@RAmjad 3 жыл бұрын
Hi and yup! It can be useful to use it as a checklist to keep track of how much you have covered. It can be quite difficult to understand at times but doing a quick Google or asking your teachers should help. Even opening that section of the CGP Revision Guide should help you undstand what it is referring to. By my Trello board, I indirectly used it as a checklist. And Anki is really good! I would recommend using it for even one topic and you will surprise yourself with how much you can remember so quickly. As for the amount of content and balancing time, I am thinking of making a video on it (maybe with some of my friends). I'd love to hear if you have any specific issues that you want me to address :)

@RAmjad
@RAmjad 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I didn't do an EPQ because I felt that it would be better if I devoted more of that time into doing tough questions to improve my problem-solving skills which would help me in admissions tests and interviews. There are people who do EPQ's and still get rejected for maths and natural sciences just because Cambridge cares more about their admissions test and interview scores. I have met two personally. The general idea I hear is that, do an EPQ if you genuiely want to but not for the sake of applying to Cambridge. You can still do other super-curricular activites to show your interest. You can email admissions offices at some Cambridge colleges and ask the same question and you are likely to get a similar response. Queens' College, Cambridge is always happy to answer admissions-related questions (I asked my a couple to them back in my day): www.queens.cam.ac.uk/applying-here/admissions-office-contacts But, of course, I'm speaking for STEM subjects, the case might be different for humanities

So you don't use any daily Calender thing ? I always loved the idea to fill out the days and move around tasks BUT i don't know if it sometimes doesn't work because i don't stick to it or because it has it's downside. What do you think about planning the whole day (every hour) in advance ?
@RAmjad
@RAmjad 3 жыл бұрын
So sorry for the late reply! I've been a little busy with exams coming up. I personally don't plan the whole day in advance as when I used to, I found it really hard to stick to it and I'd get quite anxious if I was falling behind or missed an hour's slot. It really didn't work for me which is why I just decided to make a list of tasks to do each day and I can get them done at any point in the day. But ultimately, my recommendation is that try it and if you find it works for you then that's great! If not, rather than forcing it to work for you, think about why it doesn't and either make the appropriate changes or try something else completely. I hope that helps!

Hey, I need some advice from you. I have an exam in 25 days for AS level OCR Chemistry OCR Biology and Edexcel Maths. I have 0% knowledge in these subjects. I haven't even looked at a page in the books before. What would you suggest I do so that I can CRAM all the content and just do exam questions. I'm thinking of using your anki deck for chemistry to cram in information in 9 days. Then just doing all the OCR chemistry papers for AS level in 16 days. For biology I'm just going to memorise the CGP book and do all the OCR As level past papers. Is this a good idea? I really need to cram and at least get a C grade or above (Ideally B) to continue to year 13 and not get kicked out. Please reply ASAP
@RAmjad
@RAmjad 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, that is quite a difficult one because you want to be able use that time most effectively yet also cover everything you are unsure on. I would suggest instead asking yourself, "if the exam were tomorrow, what topic would I hate to come up?" then re-learn that topic and then test yourself with some questions to make sure you understand it. Now, the difficulty comes in potentially missing topics or not really knowing how to answer that question. For that, I would suggest doing an old specification paper (or the specimen papers for maths because the old specification is quite different there) or two with no preperation to test yourself and figure out which topics need the most urgent attention and which ones require less urgent attention. That way, you can then tackle the most urgent topics first and if you still have time, you can tackle the less urgent topics. And then you can do a bunch more past papers after learning the topics but make sure you're learning content inbetween past papers for the things you get wrong. I mention this in my making the most of past papers video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4qzY3ZpiNaXqaM Many students when cramming past papers don't improve as much because they don't take some time (even 5 minutes) to pause and reflect on their next plan of action after knowing their strong topics and their weak. I hope that helps give you some ideas, let me know if you still have any questions!

Did you revise before doing the past papers or did you just attempt them without any revision beforehand? How would you suggest doing them from February as a year 13 student?
@RAmjad
@RAmjad 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Nope, I didn't really revise for the past paper beforehand. They served two purposes: (a) for helping me practice applying the content that I'm familiar with and (b) for helping me figure out what I don't know and should therefore focus on. I think there's a difference between not being able to do a question because you don't know the content and not being able to do it because it requires you to think outside the box a little. If I knew the content then I would attempt the question and after marking it, make a note of the keywords that the mark schemes like to use. If I didn't know the content then I woukdn't bother attempting the question and I would subtract that question from the total mark and ignore it when marking. Then I would learn the content, re-attempt that question, then mark it and make flashcards to ensure that I remembered the content further down the line. As for past papers, it is best to do them when you have covered I'd say about 90% of the content. I did learn ahead because I got pretty tired of how slow my teachers were going at this point and then started doing past papers much more frequently in late February / early March. I hope that helps!

Hello! Thanks for the tips, i definitely will be using some. Do you think I should get a maths tutor for A Level maths and further maths or is it too much? Thanks!
@RAmjad
@RAmjad 4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! As for getting a tutor, I think it comes down to a case-by-case basis. Don't get a tutor just for the sake of it. I think a tutor can be effective if you are behind in terms of understanding or there are a few things you don't understand. A tutor can help bring you up to speed if your teachers don't offer any drop-in sessions. Twice a week, during lunch time, my maths department would have lunch-time revision sessions where anyone could ask any questions and get help. But I understand some schools may be well-less resourced. Equally, some students can realise when they're behind, pinpoint the things they don't understand and fill in those gaps from free online resources. That does take a little bit of time - especially finding the material - and it's difficult to ask follow-up questions like you could do with an actual teacher. But in many cases, if you're watching a popular video explaining it, someone else may have had the same question in the comments below. Ultimately, I think, don't get a tutor just for the sake of it and if you do think about why you want them specifically, really do make the most of them and realise when they've served their purpose and they're just unnecessarily charging you and wasting your time by giving you questions on topics that you are already comfortable with.

Hi I was wondering how many hours it would take out of your day doing this method and did you have spare time to hand out with your friends ect?
@RAmjad
@RAmjad 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I answered a simpler comment here for how many hours I spent revising: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKLEgneQmpKjY8k&lc=UgzTZCkUtTYE3lFWY6x4AaABAg.9D7FD7Em7te9D86Pwr2YN2 As for doing the method, the method itself didn't take more than half-an-hour of management or so a week for me. Whenever I had a little time free like during form time (my sixth form had 30 minutes of form time a day!) then I would just think about what tasks I need to get done and move tasks around. I even did this during assemblies because they were never really important. And yup, I did have enough spare time during the school day and after school to do that. But I would suggest not hanging out with friends during your free's because it can become a bad habit that is hard to break, especially when you need to break it closer to exam time. I instead went with them to the library and did work there in silence and occassionally whispered if I needed help with a question

Apart from using a mistakes file which I mentioned in my A-level workflow, I came up with a few other techniques over the year to avoid making mistakes / increase the chances of finding them. I mention a few general strategies in my exam technique video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2q2l6iLi5mMd6s But I'll try to make a more math-specific one in a separate upcoming video 🚀

Hi Quick question: Do you believe it’s possible to get 4A* in bio, chem, maths & further maths in one year? I have an interest in maths I want to study dentistry BDS and physiology iBsc Keep in mind I have been predicted A*AA for bio, Chem and maths respectively and I didn’t take my exams this year due to an injury and covid-19. Thank you

Yup! It's definitely possible, don't define yourself by your predicted grades because you will end up just holding yourself back. I have many friends who beat their predicted grades because they wanted to show their teachers wrong. And I have other friends who felt like they already "achieved" their predicted grades and just became complacent and didn't revise then got less than their predict grades and missed their offer. The difference was in the mindset they had

Are you planning on making an SAQ video because i need to do one for natural sciences
@RAmjad
@RAmjad 3 жыл бұрын
=== WARNING: this question is only for Natural Sciences === Hi, great question! I have been debating it with myself. The only thing I could write about is the extra 1,200 words statement it asks you for. I have heard people argue about whether it is worth it or not. I have many friends who did write it and others who didn't and were still made offers. The idea is that, since Cambridge as slightly different courses, they understand that some students may have to write broader personal statements as the same one goes to all 5 of their choices. But, if they want to write something about the Cambridge course specifically, they should use the SAQ. This is especially true for people doing more obscure subjects. Here is what I wrote on the SAQ: ====== Studying Physics at the Cambridge Sutton Trust Summer School was wonderful. During a supervision, we touched upon using gravitationally lensed quasars to determine the mass distributions of galaxies. Diving deeper into this idea, I was intrigued by the advantages gravitational microlensing has to transit photometry in detecting exoplanets. I enjoyed attempting to link these observations to what I read in Feynman’s “QED” regarding probability amplitudes. Similarly, I love trying to explain odd demonstrations using my current understanding of chemistry (such as why bottles of supercooled water turn to ice almost instantly when hit). In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the supervision as not only did it stretch me massively, it taught me that it is not always about the right answer, it is also about what you learn along the way. Ultimately, the summer school helped me to realise that scientific disciplines are no longer so discrete. I believe that studying Natural Sciences will equip me with the means to work at and succeed in the boundaries between traditional disciplines of science. ====== So, for myself, I saw the summer school as an a chance to talk about my experiences with the Cambridge Sutton Trust Summer School which I attended the summer after Year 12 and to write a bit more about chemistry. Since I was applying for Natural Sciences at Cambridge and Durham and Physics at Manchester, Lancaster, and Imperial. I mainly focused on physics in my personal statement and wrote a bit about chemistry. I wanted to write more about it on the SAQ. However, one of my friend told me him including more information about chemistry backfired as, during the interview, they asked him about something which he wrote that he didn't actually know much about. But he was still made an offer. Ultimately, I can't say whether including more information will improve your chances of an application. If you feel you have more to write about any other science then go for it! If you want to talk about your experiences with a supervision-like experience (like I did), that may help. But try not to fill it for the sake of it, often writing nothing can be better than writing something poor in quality. But remember, it's a hollistic process, interviews, SAQ, admissions tests, personal statement, GCSE grades, etc. They're all taken into account with some areas having more weighting (like the interview) so don't get caught up in it. But I think your SAQ deadline is a week after Oxbridge applications close? So there are about 10-11 days to go, I think? I could make a video before then but I'm not sure what include. If you have any requests or questions specifically then I could address those in the video. If I don't end up making it, I'll answer them here

Would you say you can use anki instead of flashcards

Hi, I should have really clarified that when I mention flashcards, I'm talking about those things that I have on Anki, not paper-based flashcards 😅 But yes, all my flashcards were on Anki because of the spaced repetition feature it had

How do you have time to study through various resources and put them all in your notes and flashcards? There are just too much things to study and there were some days where I constantly study 8-9 hours from morning to night but still didn’t have enough time to actually study a lot of things. I also have the workflow like you have in Trello, but the difference is that my checklists are all unticked! 😂

Hi, so sorry for the late reply! Great question and I think this goes back to my point about consistently. Working for too long in the short term can lead to the law of diminishing returns ( see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diminishing_returns ). As a useful tip, I grouped my tasks into 3 types: high-demand, medium-demand and low-demand in cognitive power. High-demand tasks are usually doing past papers where I want to be the most awake / most alert to get the most out of it. It also included summarising information and turning them into flashcards. Medium-demand was usually homework and sometimes making flashcards and transferring information into the document I then turned into flashcards from various resources (see my A-level workflow video). Low-demand was mostly repetitive tasks like copying the flashcards from Word (after I made them) into Anki and even copying over some of my class notes onto the word document I used. And I usually did high-demand tasks during the day and hours when I was the most alert and low-demand tasks when I'm tired (like after having dinner in the evening) and medium-demand at any other time. This ensured I was doing the most optimal task at the most optimal time which allowed me to squeeze more out of my time. There is no point in doing low-demand tasks during 11am or 2pm during your free's when you can do a high-demand task like a past paper or vice versa (ie, doing past papers at 9pm because they're not going to get the most out of them). I hope that little tip helps you make more out of your time :)

Thank you for the kind words! Maths was a little bit of a surprise at first because I didn't do any after my Year 11 holidays so I forgot a bunch of things but fortunately my teachers starting recapping some GCSE topics and set up some pre-work to do. I talk about a little bit about my experience and getting an A* in A-level maths here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmKTeXqfnd5jm68 I hope that helps!

@RAmjad

Hi. I believe much of the same strategy can apply for IGCSE except that you would need a few more archival folders for more subjects. In which case, it may be better to get normal ring binger folders instead of lever arch folders. I hope that helps!
