I was thinking that I have a lot of fabric and I’m trying to stay committed to not buying more. Then I watched Karen Brown’s latest video on how much of an inventory she has. I don’t feel so bad anymore. She was gutsy fessing up to her mass collection, but it was interesting to watch. I love seeing what everyone has.
@PattymacMakes7 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's kind of over the top how much inventory some of us have. My biggest eye opener is how many 16" blocks I've made using only scraps. It looked like a small collection, but I've sewn FORTY blocks now! I actually can't believe it. If I sew just 8 more, it's enough for 3 throw size quilts.I'm not completely sure what I'm going to do with all of the blocks, but it's been quite a learning experience to see how far even a little will go. I've been on a no spend for 2 months now, and it's been really easy. I haven't bought a single piece of new fabric since before Christmas. I did allow a purchase of quilt batting I use that was on such a good sale I couldn't pass it up. I'm going for 90 days of no spend on fabrics. I did, however, receive something free that I'll be sharing in the next video. But that's a bit different. I did not purchase it. And I submitted a proposal for specific projects to be made using those materials, so it was all selected with a plan in mind.

It is fun yo see what others have. Karen's stash is amazing. She is a much more prolific quilter than I am, and she is much younger than me, so she has a better chance of using much of it.

Omg!! Finally someone that likes order in their fabric stash including scrap fabrics!!! I even stack, bundle, tie, or package left over yardage!!! I like to be able to see exactly what I have and pull out what I want to use. I bundle and tie my yardage that I will make the quilt top with and place in large tubs in my garage… I open tub, pull out the bundle and go to work! Sad to admit, I’ve never bought a jelly roll or any precut anything… I totally love your storage methods!!!!💖💖💖You are awesome! For backing… I grab on sale and have a separate tub ! I caught a fabric store going out of business and stocked up!!!! I’ve always been able to make it work….

So many great tips!!! YES I also collect bits and pieces of stuff for projects I'm planning though I generally use a 2 gallon freezer bag to store everything. And I like bus boxes to corral stuff.
@mgmg3000.7 ай бұрын
Thanks for showing us your precuts. I agree with you 100% on backings. I started quilting in Sept. 2019, and I switched to using flannel sheet sets by Sept 2020. I buy king-sized flannel sheets sets each fall/winter at Home Sense or Winners for about $60 each and I can usually get three quilt backings out of one set. I've given away dozens of quilts over the last four years and nobody has complained!
@PattymacMakes7 ай бұрын
That is a fabulous tip!! I have used old sheets for several of my projects and I love the way they feel when used. Designer yardage is a beautiful thing, but it's just out of my reach, personally. Especially with everything else climbing in price. I have to economize everywhere I can these days.

I use 108 wide backs when I can because it's cheaper and I don't like to piece the backing. For batting, I get the Pellon cotton batting packs from Walmart. The prices aren't bad, and I like the drape of cotton. Plus, I don't have to quilt as closely, since I do my own quilting on my little Brother sewing machine.
@PattymacMakes7 ай бұрын
Oh thanks for the tip on Walmart having Pellon! I generally buy the double packs of Pellon 80/20 from Joann on sale, but I have been wondering where I will find it if and when Joann goes down. I quilt at home on my tiny domestic machines too. I don't love it but it's what I have.

I love your hair color. Once I retired, I stopped the hair coloring and saved so much money. Actually like my grey better than the color. It is so freeing. Love that you did that as well😊😊
@PattymacMakes4 ай бұрын
Thank you!! Yeah I stopped coloring in 2020 when I couldn't get a haircut for 3 months. She took so much off when I finally got my trim I only needed one more cut and all the color would be gone. So I decided to go another 2 months and then cut out the last of the old color and I haven't colored since. I love not being a slave to doing my color. I think it's better with my cool undertones than what I was doing, and I figure I earned all this grey hair so I'm going with it! LOL

Thank you!!! Yeah, I really don't have all that much compared to what I see on other channels. But it's enough to make a TON of things which I realize very clearly now after going through my scraps and making 16" blocks. I've made FORTY of them using a very modest scrap collection, so a little goes a really long way.

I love your comments about the backing fabric...TRUTH!! I really don't enjoy quilting, so I have mostly flimmies unless it was a baby quilt for a new family member. I am making a quilt now that I will keep for myself- used a 5 yd piece I inherited from my Mom. Would not have been my first choice but sort of goes and I don't know what else I would use that fabric with. Like you said - use what I have. Think about JoAnns...I should probably buy some sale fabric to use for backing in the future.
@PattymacMakes7 ай бұрын
Oh my gosh. It gets so expensive it's becoming prohibitive. So yes, find ways to scrimp and save on the backing is the only way to do it. I should do a quick tour in my Joann and show what I use for my backing.

@PattymacMakes4 ай бұрын
Canada has lost it's mind!!!!!! I can't imagine everything being so expensive, but I do expect it to come here in the near future. Unfortunately. With our grocery prices and general cost of living increases on everything, I have cut out pretty much all my extras at this point. I'm so glad I stocked myself ahead so I have plenty to keep me occupied for a good long time.

I'm still devastated by the way they closed our beloved Craftsy. And the way they just dumped all the remaining inventory. Instead of really price slashing it for the people who loved the products, they did minimal discounts and then dumped a warehouse full of it to fabric stores all over the country. But it was so difficult to buy it from stores like that. Anyway. I have what I have and it's tucked away for a while.

I have just purchased 2 ROLLING MESH CARTS at COSTCO at $50 each. They are similar to yours only a little wider and have 4 deep drawers. Has helped me so much as my sewing room is my living room too. Then I found 108”x108 backings on Amazon for $45.00 each. I splurged and got 9. The brand is AQCO. I am 76 Years old, love to sew and finish the quilting with Elmer’s glue basting and straight line quilting. I figure this is what I need to do as I have a lot of trouble piecing the backs and getting down on the floor is no longer for me . If you have many 4 1/2 “ squares, could you consider making backs out of these?
@PattymacMakes7 ай бұрын
The carts sound like a great find! Thanks for sharing that info! I don't think I would use the 16 patches as backing because I like them enough to be the star of the quilt and not just the backing. I kind of prefer a plain backing anyway, like a solid flannel. It's soft and warm and the solid doesn't compete with my pieced front. I have several viewers who can't handle the floor anymore so you are in good company. I'm going to keep doing it as long as I'm able. Thanks for sharing your great methods!

Enjoyed seeing your precut storage. In the process of organizing my collections. Just a comment about the fq you have from Joann. The sticker leaves a sticky residue on the fabric if you keep it on and don’t use the fabric for a while. I now take off the sticker after purchase and put it on a piece of paper if I want to keep it.

Oh I didn't realize that!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing that great info!

The backing is my stumbling block too. That’s why I have so many tops that I have not finished because of the price of backing.

I KNOW!!! I wind up buying snuggle flannel in Joann when it's on sale, and using that. They also have widebacks but the selection is not as good. That inexpensive flannel is my go to for backing except in very specific instances.

I like how compacted your stash is stored. I ago with you regarding Joanne’s it is not going to be long before they are gone. Hopefully they are still available online. It is sad! I love to goo to the store to touch and feel the fabric and to see the colors. I’m that lady takes multiple bolts to a counter to try out the fabrics to see how they look together. Your rambling does not bothers me at all.
@PattymacMakes7 ай бұрын
Oh my gosh. I know. I do the same thing with looking at what I'm getting. Unless I just go in for a couple of specific items like neutral background fabrics or flannel for backing. I buy everything online now because we don't have any quilt shops here, and when we did she was so expensive I couldn't afford to shop there. She wanted $15 a yard 5 years ago! Anyway. I do like Hobby Lobby, but mine has such a small fabric section there's not a lot of selection. I kind of think that when Joann goes out, it is probably gone for good. Like how they liquidated Craftsy products when NBC took over Bluprint and ran that into the ground. Invest in items that you can use across multiple projects like neutral backgrounds and polka dots in multiple colors. That stuff can be easily mixed in with more expensive items pretty easily.
@Sand-Lind7 ай бұрын
Haven't been back to Joanne's in over a year. They were so not seeming to want to be helpful and the store wasn't even busy. I now buy on line, Walmart, & Hobby Lobby. Have had good results from all. I figure, if you don't want to wait on me, I don't want to shop with them. Besides, I have enough to last the rest of my life. (I'm 80 yrs.)

I have started backing with large cotton sheets, flannel, blankets, I can't afford backing, also batting has increased and I'm living on social security, so I have to cut corners, I did break down at Christmas and bought a roll of batting at joanns on sale, 8t blew my fabric budget for this year, but oh well, I guess I need food and vitamins, gas and electricity
@PattymacMakes7 ай бұрын
Oh my gosh!! Who needs to eat or stay healthy?? LOL Yeah, the cost of just "keeping the lights on" has gotten so high, I barely shop at all now. Any shopping I do now is for groceries that are on sale so I can stock up the sale prices and have it on hand or necessities like laundry soap or car maintenance. I bought 4 packages of queen size quilt batting from Joann on a really good sale in January. It amounted to $16 a package which is a heck of a deal for Pellon 80/20 batting so I got it. It's easier for me to store packages than rolls so I stash packages in multiple sizes. I also like the snuggle fabrics from Joann in solids for backing. I get it on sale and put away what I can. But gosh, what a challenge it's been!
