The grey bucket with the handle is for separating your trash. I have 6 more square ones in a big drawer under my kitchen sink. In Sweden we separate our trash and recycle it. I separate plastic, glass, metal, cardboard, paper and organic waste. Once a week or so we take it to a recycling station (we are only 2 in our household).🇸🇪
@PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
Oh ok! Thank you! Here we have large cans to put the recycling in and they pick it up on trash day. I compost my own kitchen scraps so that stays out of the landfill. I keep my glass jars to reuse for different things some of which are actual mason jars that I can use to can my own produce in. Recycling is a bit of a scam as I understand it. Most of that stuff winds up in landfills or dumped at sea, so it's really better to incorporate the waste into your lifestyle and limit the need to recycle or throw away anything. It's difficult, but a better long term impact. We need to shift from consumption to production, and this is difficult as the means of production is not high tech and it's rather dirty. But so rewarding!
@spacepuppie Жыл бұрын
@@PattymacMakes Yeah, I remember hearing that recycling in the US can be a bit of a scam. I'm from the US but have lived in Sweden for the past 12 years. And they really do recycle everything here. You can't walk up the street too long before you come to recycling bins. I don't think I've ever seen regular trash cans here. I guess that's a friendly tip for anyone thinking about visiting Sweden ... be prepared to separate your trash. It's really nice though and why Ikea sells those small trash bins =)
@PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
@@spacepuppie It's not difficult to do, for sure! Reducing waste over all is the real key and reusing what you can at home instead of the recycling is also key. I've started making my own condiments like sour cream and salad dressings etc, so that reduces a TON of plastic waste. Plus it's much better for our health. It's all about changing habits, and while it does generate extra work, I think the benefit outweighs the inconvenience. I love my country, but frankly, A LOT of what they feed Americans in terms of food and information and news is garbage and a total scam. It's sad and I hope the country wakes up at some point. Love to connect with others around the world over our mutual love of IKEA!! 😃

Little fun fact about the names at IKEA: each group has a “theme”. Garden furniture has names of Swedish islands, book shelves are named after jobs or beds are named after Norwegian cities. And since the danish and Swedish people like to tease each other, all rugs and door mats have names of danish cities 😅

I have a great hack for the jonaxel. I run a prayer quilt ministry, and we needed multiple sewing stations. We have 4 of them spaced out along a long wall, and we cut and finished plywood, to make table tops, we now have 3 complete sewing stations and each station has its own set of drawers and supplies. It is the perfect table top height for a work station. this could also work for an office desk at home, and I bet they have table tops you can buy and use as well.

Glad you are planning ahead with your ability to get food. Everyone needs to do what you did and plan to have food for an extended period of time. A years worth of food we rotate through in our homes would save so much stress with the increase of prices. I feed my dogs a bunch of veggies and have had the hardest time getting them at Costco (medley mix, cabbage heads). I plan to grow a garden full of cabbage this summer to freeze for them. Having a dehydrator would be even better to do what you did. I’m in Alaska and we do not have IKEA here but I enjoyed watching what you looked at. Take care and keep on planning for a rainy day.
@PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
Thank you Kathy! I agree having an extended pantry to carry you along for a long period of time is critically important. People dismiss it and it's detrimental. The cost of everything is so high now, that if I didn't have put away what I put away, I would have trouble keeping us fed. And I am growing everything I can to minimize buying produce in the store. I haven't found it as easy to get my lettuce going as people like to say, but once it establishes it does really well. I have a Cosori dehydrator and I did my own potato slices last year which are really good. I want to start growing my own mushrooms and I figure I can dry those, too. Ikea is a huge blessing, and I'm so ready to go back again for another visit! You might want to consider a heated green house or some sort of indoor grow set up so you can extend your growing season and have more variety of produce. Alaska is a tough climate to garden in!

Thanks for that wonderful feedback Jodi! I lived rural for about 7 years, and some things I loved, but other things I didn't. The driving made me crazy, and it was too much for me. I also take care of my mother and there's no way I can manage her in that situation anymore. We are back in town, and while I do love it, I also kind of wish I was way out in the boondocks right about now. That's a great idea!! And also a great tip on adding wood glue to strengthen the furniture. I absolutely love my Ikea furniture and people who are critical of it have probably not used any of it. Thanks for your comment!

Thank you for the heads up on the Hogsma. I have two raskog carts and I was able to order the tops. Our IKEA is 2 hours away and prepandemic I loved going every so often but our store has been so bare the last few times because of the pandemic. Luckily I got the drop leaf table right before the lock down and it is the perfect table in my sewing room. I have so much ikea furniture. 🤣
@PattymacMakes2 жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh, you will LOVE the Hogsma. It's a small thing but it makes such a difference. I need to redo my office trolley when I get to the spring cleaning...probably next month after the worst of the pollen is over. The store here is hit or miss, and what's in now it a LOT more expensive, so I'm glad I'm not in the immediate market for any furniture. It's not going to improve any time soon which is sad. Very sad. I'm so glad I took the chance on my Norden when I had the chance. It's been such a great sewing table.

Thank you for your in-store video. I enjoyed it very much. I actually have been looking online at some IKEA cabinets. I have only been in IKEA twice I think and one time was just to get some food with my daughter from their food court. So it was interesting to me to see how it works, and I appreciate that. I am not far from an IKEA store, so perhaps I will have to make a trip there now!

In Ontario Canada there is a pick up location 1 hour away from ikea so that is very handy. Does cost I think $5-9 charge but way cheaper than their shipping charges. They used to charge $10 and now it’s tripled. Loved your video. I always get overwhelmed going to ikea. Actually any big store …squirrell!😳

Dear Patty, I would love to see your sewing room with all the little interesting things you use for organizing. By the way: you should keep your dehydrated spinach in the dark because some vitamins vanish in light.
@PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
Thanks Miriam!! I tend to use it pretty fast as I like to go through it once the can has been opened. I don't have a proper pantry and little cabinet storage so it's difficult to keep the food in the dark here. Unfortunately. I will absolutely make a video to show all the items and how I use them! Thank you for the suggestion!

Love your IKEA tour as I’m always looking for ways to organize. You made me laugh when you showed that big bucket with lid in the ugly color. I’ve seen people use those to help organize their freezer chest. They keep meat in one, vegetables in another etc. Liked your idea about a specific container for scraps which I think I’m also going to use. Thanks for sharing!
@PattymacMakes Жыл бұрын
That's a good idea in terms of using them to organize the chest freezer. Some people for Europe said they are used to separate the recycling but I get curbside pickup here so I don't worry too much about having small containers for my recycling items. I wound up doing something different with my scraps and I'll make a video about that today!

Can you do a video tour of local quilt shops? Love Ikea. You gotta use a little Yankee ingenuity in getting some of those heavy boxes on the warehouse shelves onto your trolly and then into your car when you don’t have help.
@PattymacMakes2 жыл бұрын
So true!! 😂😂 I went back and wound up getting a new office chair that was on close out. There is only one local shop here that’s a quilt store which is why I go to Joann so often and order online. There is a fabric store on the other side of town I haven’t been to yet so I need to check them out. And a couple other Joann stores that are larger than my usual store. I don’t go to the small quilt shop because she’s still enforcing masks and I don’t support businesses still doing that. Everything is open here and case counts are virtually zero so I think it’s ridiculous. She’s the only business I know of here still doing that. I know it’s controversial but I live in a free state and I have a choice about masking as well as where I spend time and money as she has the right to make requests of her guests. So I won’t go to her shop until things change. Though to be honest she’s $15 and up a yard and I can do better for my money with fat quarter shop. Though if she dropped her mandate, I would definitely visit again. This is my personal choice and I’m grateful to still have that freedom. Maybe as summer wears on. I can call her and confirm whether it’s still the case or not but as of today it’s still posted on her website.
@jojorey68862 жыл бұрын
@@PattymacMakes I agree with you 100% about having to still wear a mask, the owner of the quilt store is most likely fearful. I live in MA and the only place I have to wear a mask is in healthcare establishments although I still see a lot of people wearing masks out and about.
@jojorey68862 жыл бұрын
@@PattymacMakes your Ikea is nicer than mine, I have to park in the underground basement and enter through the garage. I have ordered online and picked up at the store, that went well for large items because they go get them. I still had to put them in my car, the guy handed me the trolley and walked away. Chivalry is dead.
