I get lingerie laundry bags, some are drawstring but I prefer the zipper (as long as the yarn doesn't get caught) I have thought about mesh bags but I would honestly make my own too. Also I get them from the dollar store or my work, it's only a dollar but if you wanna bigger sized one it's 2 bucks

Wow, I'm so glad you corrected that statement! Lol! My 71 year old heart almost choked when you said if you come and help me u can have all the yarn u can stuff into a tote! First I thought of how long it would take me to get there from Tennessee. Second I thought of what it would take me to get my husband to drive me there...(I still have not recovered enough oof my sight from long hauler covid effects to be able to drive yet). Third I thought of all the hundreds of traffic jams we would have to negotiate with folks heading straight for your wool stash! Fourth, I remembered, thankfully, we are broke and our soc. sec. Check has not got here yet! And then as my heart got its rhythm back you said you were just kidding. Whew! Quick thinking for an old lady, eh? Thought u would like my funny story of There and back again all in one night. LOL

Hi crystal. I used to store my yarn in those giant storage containers but they got so heavy that I would have to ask my husband to take a few off of the top so I could get to the yarn I wanted. He wasn’t too happy about that so I didn’t get to SEE all of my yarn that I had. Now I bought storage draws from Walmart. They have wheels on them so you could roll them out of your storage area without help. Or you don’t have to put the wheels on at all and just stack them. I’ve never seen a bug in my yarn but I saw a video on KZbin that bugs don’t like bounce dryer sheets. They hate them. So I put a sheet of bounce in the bottom of each draw. Now not only do I NOT have to ask for help I can just open any draw to play with my yarn cause we all like to do that. Also I sort my yarn into groups like baby yarn or scarf yarn or for a blanket. Makes it easier for everyone. They say oh she’s in her yarn again. Lol 😂

All my totes have cards attached with quantity counts and yarn specs (yardage & thickness) . I wrap my whites in acid free tissue paper. All the yarn is stored with like colors and content (blues , blacks & purple wool with similar or same wool etc.). I have big skeins of wool Aran from 40yrs ago from a sale for 50 cents each. I bought all they had, over 200. My husband at the time thought I was nuts. I told him it would last for years and save a ton of money. He’s passed on now , but I’m pretty sure I still have 20+ left. It’s still fabulous because I took care of it. It never goes out of style either. I Love my yarn. ❤️

I think your new system is well thought out. Here's what I do out of necessity. People say I have too much yarn (not), and I've had people in the past actually walk around my house looking for yarn to see if I purchased any more. For size comparison, I've only got about enough yarn to complete maybe ten or twelve afghans (which I like to give away). Not a lot. What I do is this. I have seats, hassocks, furniture that have storage inside under the cushions. This is where I put my yarn. People can sit on them. Mostly my cats sit on them. It's right in front of people's nosy noses and they don't even know it's there. I agree with you that yarn, and textiles, have to be protected from bugs (and mold). I'm a yarn sniffer/hugger, too. I love it. Great idea for an episode, glad you presented it. (By the way, Darian Roscoe was my beloved cat who I miss with all my heart. My name is Kat--and I'm not a cat. Lol!)

Just as when my parents bought their first home 30 years ago they purchased a lot of decore from Ltd magazine (known for cute decor that's also a bit on the cheap side) for no reason than being affordable. To this day there are still some pieces that they purchased that are present in the house! Treat things correctly and they last a lifetime

From a military spouse with 19 cross state and overseas moves in 28 years suggestion: throw a dryer sheet (even dollar tree kind) into your box and it will keep the bugs away. I’ve done this for decades into all material of any kind boxes for storage or moving. Never had a problem with any bugs. I currently keep my yarn in my secretariat desk drawers with dryer sheets as well.

What a fantastic idea! Love the bags. I've been doing the totes forever but adding the bags is a great idea. Would also be good to put lavender, peppermint, or even dryer sheet in the totes to help keep the bugs out. They also sell cedar balls you could add. Bugs are so sneaky they will get into the smallest spaces. I like peppermint tea bags , it's already self contained.

I wouldn’t use dryer sheets, it’s highly carcinogenic.. The petrochemical based artificial scents used in commercial dryer sheets have 100s of compounds that are considered carcinogenic. Really. I make perfumes and I know about scents and though I’m not a chemist, I know professional chemists who told me this. Stay away from commercial dryer sheets for real. You can use cedar wood or lavender flowers.

I poke a hole in the plastic bags so they stay fresh. I keep some yarn in my "Yarnia Closet" made out of mahogany. It's actually a wardrobe. The yarn I have in totes I put dryer sheets in them, that keeps the bugs out. Since I love in a flood zone, drilling holes in them makes me leary. It's an awesome idea and I get the logic but with my circumstances, I'll start away from that. I do open them up once or twice a month to get stuff out of them. Thank you for the tips with the mesh bags, I love that idea. Stay safe and hydrated.

Great Video. thanks for proving that it pays to keep yarn organized and safe. lol my husband thinks I am strange. (back story) So we have 5 cats and go through a lot of litter. and I have gone through several different kinds of litter. I came across Tidy Cat and found it to work very well. well I order 6 buckets at a time from chewy now and am now called the yellow bucket queen. I first made a storage bucket for our big orange extension cords. cut a hole in the back buttom for the cord to plug into the outlet. then on the front cut a slot for the cord to come out for what ever it needs to be plugged into. when you are done, plug the female (back portion) into the male (front part) wind up the cord that was used. close the lid, lift the bucket by your by the handle and BAM!! So I started using the buckets for other storage things. Now I use them for my yarn. I now store project yard in a cleaned out bucket. I also put 1 hole per side close to the top. lastly, I love to put smelly socks into every bucket except the ones with tools or hard drives. Downey laundry beads and mismatched socks. pour a quarter of a lid into a mismatch or single sock (we have many of those) use a zip tie to close it and just plop it into every bucket with yarn. I have a whole wall of stacked yellow buckets. all labeled with what project or kind of yarn. they are easily decorated with contact paper or designer Duct Tape. with the handle it is easy to take on the go. .................. these Buckets are also great for packing an emergency kit. so, I get cat litter, use it in our litter buckets, and not fill the landfill with empty sturdy buckets. Thank you and you are welcome.

Thanks for all the yarn storage tips, updates. Love all these wonderful subscriber comments too! I keep an established yarn stash listing, (I chose my free Ravelry account for this purpose), with very detailed info as well as yarn purchase dates, fiber, weight, colors etc, and when I store my yarn in totes, I work up 'cut/paste info from my Ravelry listings onto my tote tag labels. Each yarn in the tote listing usually appears as a detailed one-liner, so I can cut/paste/customize my totes labelling very efficiently, and then that helps me know exactly what's in the totes, and I can also highlight purchase and storage date, quantity, and intended use of yarn on my tags, as I try to work up donation projects within roughly a next 12 month period, for example. I also can easily find stash yarns I decide not to use, amend my Ravelry stash list, and then donate those yarns locally. I keep a smaller notebook of intended yarn/pattern compatible future projects and ideas,( including Bag O Day tutorials and suggestion !!!), and that also allows this 'yarny fanatic' to know which totes (by number labelling) to find the yarn easily, rather than get too wishy washy and dazed out by all the out ot sight yarny goodness. I have been on my crochet journey for only 4 years now, like to have multiple WIPS, and am trying to maintain a reasonable budget, and still learn crochet techniques. So my storage system keeps me "in line". and also lets me have all the fun I could dream up without the stress. btw, I have a few separate notebook storage binders for patterns, favorite designers, or new yarns of interest, as many other crafters certainly do. Too many amazing yarns find their future on the yarn "discontinued" lists way too soon. (Ugh!!) For me, these calculated "extra steps" I take really go hand in hand with my yarn storage.

I make prayer shawls that are given away. I store my yarn in 12x18inch organza bags. One bag holds enough yarn needed for one shawl. When I complete the shawl, I use the bag as the gift bag. I have had clothes moths in the past. It was horrible to open a tote to discover moths had gotten inside. Protecting your yarn stash is important. Thank you for another informative video 😘

Hi, Chrystal. I am so glad you made this video. I keep my yarn in totes but not the mesh bags, and it makes good sense. Bugs in our yarn...ewww, but it's true and the reality. Thanks for sharing this information with us.

I have yarn on bookshelves, in totes and on my bedroom closet shelf. This is the most yarn I've ever had. Bought while on sale.

Thank you very much Crystal for video. I have been contemplating how to store my helpers of my imagination of all the beautiful things we can create together. I have been storing my beauties much like you have been doing. I have been constructing an idea of how to use lucite and mesh as I too enjoy admiring the textures of these beautiful fibers and don't wish to store them away to be not gazed upon. I love your idea of the mesh bags but perhaps wools etc hung in the bags in a spiral on hooks ....anyway thank you so very much! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

If I lived closer, I’d love to help. OKC,OK is a road trip! I store my yarn so I can see it and after awhile it seems to tell what it wants to be, and I like looking at my yarn. Love your videos, keep up the great work!

I have made some of your baskets 🧺 and maybe the cats bed with higher sides. My scraps are in a Costco cheese balls container, where I make them into single round granny squares to be put together in strips and made into blankets. I also have completed Gifts 🎁 in a heavy plastic zippered blanket bag. Thanks for sharing. This year is the first time I've had a stash. So I will be using some of your ideas when I get home to Arizona.

I have 5 cardboard long office file drawers I got from previous job. They are full of older brands of red heart 4 ply yarns and cotton crochet threads. Some day when I can buy new yarns, I want to put in tots also. Good idea about mesh bags that is a great idea.

Hi Crystal! I don’t think it’s excessive! You have a lot of yarn and yarn is expensive and precious! Great job!! Thanks for sharing! 😊💖
