I've been using my altoid container for notions since high school. I will never forget the time I asked my mint-loving friend if he happened to have an extra tin and he dumped the entire contents of one in his mouth, handed me the empty tin, and didn't understand why the whole lunch table was staring at him with wide eyes.

My fav tip I learned was to take a picture of my project right after starting it with the hook clearly visible in the picture! I don't always remember to write it down, but I almost always take a pic when I start a new project because I want to share with my crafty friends. It has saved me a few times when I had to set my project down for a long while for whatever reason.

I have a background in science--so I've discovered that test tube racks are great for displaying crochet hooks.
@marychoy9340 Жыл бұрын
I am shopping for a used test tube holder rn 😊. I also use a beautiful ceramic orchid pot which was a gift from a dear friend. (That orchid got repotted in a new container). Now this 4” wide 5” tall ceramic pot holds a few hooks, dpns, pen/pencils, scissors, gauge ruler, etc. I open a large vinyl covered paperclip and hang on the rim of the pot with a dozen stitch markers on it and a second one with a tapestry needle that clip a stitch marker through the eye and hang on the paperclip. This container of tools sits on my serving didhes/bar/vase storage shelf in my dining room. When I sit at my dining room table to work on a yarn project, the orchid pot of tools is my centerpiece.

Dollar tree has amazing storage options of all kinds. I get a lot of my smaller bins, trays and buckets there. I also found these plastic tote bins with locking handles in various sizes and colors at Walmart for cheap. They come in bulk packs or singles. I personally use the clear bins and go crazy with my label maker to make sure I know what's in what bin. Makes it easy to keep track and I can see most everything at a glance. Everything is stacked neat and tidy. I like to keep my current project and all the tools in a smaller bin that I can just grab and go.

I have one trick I've been using for day to day things, but especially yarn: If you think the cute design means you'll use it more, get it and use it! Even if it's a design meant for kids! Lovely ideas Toni, Thank you! I am a WIP devil. They’re everywhere. In grocery bags, zippered clear bags that linens come in. I’ve got them in tubs with lids, in the closet, under the bed, upstairs, downstairs. So for 2024 I decided to break it down to “about” 15ish projects. I went to Hobby Lobby and purchased some of their very, very inexpensive canvas bags ($0.99 to $4.99). They come in so many sizes. Some are totes with handles, some are zippered canvas pouches. I love these bags. Now, as they are canvas and you can’t see what’s inside, I tied a piece of the project yarn to each handle or zipper so At a glance I know what is in that bag or pouch. As I finish one project I put a new “old” wip in that now empty project bag. So far it is a system that is working well for me. I have also “made” myself sew in all ends right then when the project is finished. Lastly I have “made” myself write a notecard for each of the wips I am working on that also goes into the bag. 2024 is going to be my year for productivity and with this system I can’t wait to finish one project so I can stick a new/old one into that canvas bag. Some of my wips are not something I want to finish so it may get frogged and the yarn recycled back into my stash for later use and I am okay with that too. 💕

My daughter and granddaughters love TEMU. I have put my yarn in the various sized plastic zippered bags that they've received in orders. Not only does it keep new/and partially used yarn clean, it also protects it from my cats. I keep my "notions" in different containers ( some are storage, others are unusual glass jars, empty pill bottles, cookie bins etc). I'm moving soon and it is much easier since most of my yarn is already separated and bagged. I keep my WIPs and UFOs in bags from various stores (not the thin plastic grocery bags) and they are different sizes that can handle either small or large projects. 1:09

I use a hanging toiletry bag for the majority of my hooks/needles/scissors/stitch markers/etc. It's super easy to grab when I'm traveling or just hang up near my work area and I can close it up and put it away when I'm not using it. I've also seen 'caboodles' and tool boxes used for this. I saw someone who had a travel professional makeup suitcase they used for all their tools and notions. For project bags, I really love reusable grocery bags. I also go on a work trip every year where there are a ton of vendors who have those branded canvas bags for free...I take one of each I find and use those as project bags. I also use the fabric gift bags you can find at Christmas. Also...diaper bags...I have reused my daughter's diaper bag for a big project bag. I also purchased some others. There's so many pockets and some can transition to a backpack. I usually use these for big projects that use a lot of yarn like blankets or sweaters. I can usually fit everything I need into all the pockets and keep all my yarn in one place or at least one skein of each color.

We have 3 crocheters in my house. It makes project bag management a must. I have 2 that were purchased for me that I use for travel projects. While I love my bags, I find that I prefer using storage bins for my stationary projects. Especially ones with a top. I use them so that my WIPS aren't confused with my mother and daughters. Plus I can keep everything in the bin, put a lid on it, and then put it on the shelf for my WIPs. They range in size to accomodate anything from the amigurumi I'm making (complete with a bag of poly fil) to my blankets (12 -16 skeins). I keep the pattern, hook, notions box/bag (slowly becoming my new addiction), notebook, pen, and yarn all in the labeled container complete with a due date on it. The due date doesn't always work, but it reminds me when I want it complete. If it's a gift I'll leave a note in the bin for myself. It's a little bit of extra work when I go to start a new project, but it keeps me motivated. A note on noti0n tins, I picked up a couple of cute metal pencil boxes at the dollar store for $1.25. They are the perfect size for a hook, foldable scissors or seam snippers, stitch markers and I add a small magnet to help keep track of pins and my tapestry needle.

I use fancy face moisturizer jars for stitchmarkers. Some are so pretty i hate throwing them away. Look nice on my desk,too! Just wash and dry thoroughly. ❤️

When I have a WIP I use an idea from Krista on the secret yarnery. Post it notes are important but I don't want to put hooks in a bag I might not get to for a while, so I use a colored stitch marker similar to the color of my hook. That tells me what hook to use when I return to it.😊

I like to go to the Dollar Tree for my storage. They have cute metal pencil boxes that you can add magnets to for needles and scissors and there's room for 2 crochet hooks, needle threader and a few stitch markers. They also have large fabric totes, they aren't very thick, but so far they hold a lot of yarn and the WIP and I've not had any issues. There are also clear plastic organizer bags that are great for his and notions. They small storage containers that I use for holding large beads that work great for stitch markers. I store a lot of my yarn in organza bags. I do have more expensive/sturdy bags for taking WIPs when I travel. I have an old clothes basket that holds all of my leftover yarn. I typically use 4 weight, so I don't have to worry about weights getting mixed. Cheap hair clips work well to keep the end of the yarn secure in the ball or cake. I do like to cake my yarn before using just to deal with yarn barf before I get to work. I write the hook size on a little sticker and wrap that around the center pull and I'll put the yarn name, color, weight and yardage on another sticker to hold the end of the yarn to the cake. I like the idea of vacuum bags for storage but I've heard that if you use it for yarn skeins it can cause issues with it when you go to work with it later, but that may only be an issue for hoarders like me that take a while to actually use the yarn.

Old shoe boxes or bags are food to store hooks yarn or project and you can label them and stack them so can see at a glance what you have. Hope that helps x

Camera bags come in all sorts of configurations and sizes - and have many, many pockets. Right now, I’m using a camera backpack for WIPs with my hooks in a roll-up and a silicone bag.

Great ideas here, thanks! Would love to see some ways to keep yarn samples, like a yarn library so that I know what I have at a glance.
