In this video I have a go at applying some anti-corrosion protection to the MG ZS EV, using Bilt Hamber Dynax Seam sealant and Dynax S50 wax to address the lack of seam protection on the rear of the car.

Your MG is no worse underneath than most cars I see. The best manufacturers for undersealing seem to be Kia and Hyundai. Strangely even though I am a massive Toyota fan they dont seem to underseal as well as some others. However even after fifteen years its rare for one to need welding for its annual M.O.T. I can give no better comment than I would not hesitate to buy an MG ZS EV

In all honesty the best time to rust proof a car is when it is as new as possible. I've previously rust proofed a car with 7 miles on the clock. Manufacturers only want it to last through the warranty period and maybe a little longer to save embarrassment. On a brand new car it takes maybe an hour to inject all the cavities with wax and spray clear underbody wax on the running gear etc. Well worth doing.
@funsky77

Definitely going to do this on my new vehicle! I hope they dont think this is considered a modification for the finance lease agreement though!

@funsky if yhe vehicle is brand new and you don't want anything obvious. I'd recommend Bilt Hamber Dynax UC as it's completely transparent. It's not as durable as the S50 from them but it is considerably less obvious. Its safe on all surfaces, don't get it on brakes though. Then I'd do the cavities with S50 or if you want a clear option then Dinatrol 1000 is excellent for cavities.

Thanks Matt for doing this video and all your others. The amount of rust on the MG is no more than any other car. There are a number of people looking to fault this being a Chinese made car. For the amount of effort to give additional protection and reassurance is worth the effort. I jack each rear wheel up individually and put bricks under each, that gives plenty of room to get under the back. Then I lower it down and do the front. The ZS is such a spacious and practical car and only 4,314mm long.
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 3 жыл бұрын
Yes there's enough clearance to do this job with a few bricks under the rear wheels or getting the wheel on a curb. Its only at the back this needs doing and the ground clearance of the ZS EV is plenty enough to get under the rear and do this.

I don't have an MG, but this is fantastic content. If only everyone who bought a new car did this in the first year of ownership. We recently did the Dynax S50 to our Dacia, and it looks like it already has brown cavity wax dripping out of its box section which is good. The other thing is, I've just had to replace some brake pipes on my 12 year old Toyota due to corrosion, so from now on I will be treating brake pipes with some spray wax or Dynax. They look like they don't have any rubberised coating on your MG so you might want to hit those too. Mine have rubber/plastic coating on most of the pipe, but corroded on the few areas that are bare.

Great video and great to help the community. I would just say that i think the seem sealer has hidden your rust issue and it will come back through and you should of let it dry for a good period (week) as you could of trapped some damp in the joints when you sealed them but i am aware you also dried it. But still super effort 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Great job, prevention for peace of mind is better than cure, did mine last year in Summer, I used Bilt Hamber Dynax UC Clear Anti Corrosion Underbody Wax, it was a lot less messy than the S50 you used, but it's extension tube was more like a wd40 not the clever 360 style of yours

MG is a brand from Chinese owned SAIC Motor but that doesn't automatically mean cheap or low quality. Those people that question MG should understand just how many products, automotive or not, that may well be designed or engineered in the UK, US or parts of Europe, but are often assembled in the Far East. Tesla, Apple and Lenovo are a few well-known companies that spring to mind with factories in China. Not forgetting Geely who have majority ownership in one way or another of Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Proton and LEVC the London electric taxis.

Go lightly with the seam sealer and just a fine mist of wax will suffice. I’ve seen BMWs with similar corrosion after three years. The main thing is to clean the car underneath regularly with a hosepipe. A pressure washer may do more harm than good.
@matthewwakeham2206
@matthewwakeham2206 3 жыл бұрын
I'd say the the seam sealer is counter productive unless you can do both sides and ends of the seam. It's just going to trap water in there and rust out quicker. I'd never recommend using any product that sets or creates a barrier that water can get behind. I'm strongly considering using lanoguard products on my 10 year old car. Lanoguard is a bit expensive and you have to do it every year but for effective corrosion treatment that is the only method that actually works. The reason for looking at lanoguard is that it will not degrade rubber bushes or brake hoses so you can spray it everywhere except on the brakes themselves.
@markthomasson5077
@markthomasson5077 3 жыл бұрын
My assumption is that you are correct here. The solid sealant could trap in moisture and make it worse....especially if done once rust has started. I would use a liquid product, good old Waxoil? I recall hearing that London Busses tried spraying with used engine oil each year, worked a treat apparently
@matthewwakeham2206
@matthewwakeham2206 3 жыл бұрын
@@markthomasson5077 I'd only use waxoyl if you soak the rust in duck oil first. Then you'd want to spray it with duck oil every year to top it up. Otherwise it dries to a crust and the rust carries on underneath. Probably okay if you wire brush to sound metal first. Lanoguard is made from the grease in sheep's wool which is very good at coating and creeping. I tried engine oil on my last car. It's now being scrapped because it didn't work.

Even if would trap water - not an issue. Just remember chemistry lessons from school, that is reaction which requires oxygen. No oxygen - no reaction, no rust
@matthewwakeham2206
@matthewwakeham2206 3 жыл бұрын
@@vladzis the oxygen would get in the same way as the water. In fact there will be oxygen dissolved in the water. Put some nails in a jar and fill it to the brim with water and put the lid on. The nails will rust. If you put seam sealer on anywhere that is already rusty or that has a void behind it then in 2-3 years time you'll be able to peel the seam sealer off with a layer of rust and just possibly half the seam too. My point is that if you want to protect seams you'd first have to convert the rust using phosphoric acid or something similar and then you'd want to use a product that would seep and creep into all the voids in the seam. I would still recommend that this was a wax or lanolin based product so that you could check it each year and top it up as necessary. For reference I studied chemistry at A-level in the UK and I've been dealing with rusty old cars and machinery for about 15 years. If you haven't pulled off seam sealer complete with paint and a layer of rust then you haven't lived.
@vladzis
@vladzis 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewwakeham2206 we have done this experiment in school as well, BUT, we have done another one as well, when you apply oil on the top of a jar. Yes, it will start to rust, but only to a point where it's going to use all dissolved oxygen in the water, and then it stops. I know some products can become sponge like over time, when it hardens, so the there is a chance to oxygen get to rusty and moisty place once again

Never used this bilt hamer whatever but after the 10 or so videos I've seen, this stuff seems legit. But I use mineral, baby oil, heated up Vaseline, mixed with wax from all wax toilet gaskets. Mix 2 gaskets, 2 tubs of Vaseline, 2 bottles of mineral oil if u don't like using motor oil, trans fluid and grease. Either is hard to beat for the cost of anything else and most waxs don't have oils in them and cost ALOT. And taking it to a Kroil, etc place my quote for a Lincoln yown car was $600. That's basic spray, not the best I could get. I can make alot of either mix of oils and wax for $600. Gun yo spray with nozzles, wands etc costs 40-60$.

I have been thinking of getting this done to my three years old Nissan LEAF, not especially because of particular rust wories but, because I will probably buy my car at the end of the PCP period. For my needs (not having to travel 400 miles every day :-) I am very pleased with my LEAF and see nothing on the market worth paying to change car. Can you give a rough estimate as to the total labour time taken of your work as I will have to ask local garage to do it. I realise that the LEAF will be different but just some indication, thanks.
