Im less than a minute ten seconds in - and I have to pause and say BRAVO! FUCKING A! Much respect for the candor - for being bravely vulnerable. We need more dudes being honest about their feelings and owneing it. Its the only way - through this dark time we are in globally - I know that sounds hyperbolic - and I am not one to make bold proclamations about how people "should be" - but the more cats who are willing to open up - and move through their pain - the better the world gets. Not kidding. So thank you for doing this... now back to the show.... (BTW - I had my first panic attack in my early 40s - I ended up in the ER - as I thought I was having a heart attack . The struggle is real! Much love and respect)

It makes absolutely no sense why something you create for yourself would even be enough to make someone mad, let alone make them take the time to transmit that negativity to you. They could just click off the video. Your content is great and there's enough of us that appreciate it. Please, don't get discouraged by the few unhappy souls who need to spread their toxicity.

I'm 57 this year, and have wanted to create electronic music since the 1980's when I had access to a Korg M1 for about 4 months. I finally made the time in my life to pursue this passion, and you have summed up my feelings perfectly in my learning journey. I did manage to eek out some income as a drummer for about 25 years in bar/blues bands, but that was just to keep my music itch scratched. Now with some time on my hands and the incredible array of technologies available to create music, I'm starting to pursue this passion again. Cameron's videos have been a key part of this, and I thank you (Cameron) for this opportunity to follow your journey as it enriches mine. I hope that I can recall all the music theory I learned in the 70's when I was taking accordion lessons, and wrangle that in to songs that are finally ready to come out. I appreciate you, Cameron, and your vulnerability. Ignore the haters. Be you.

I don’t write KZbin comments. Maybe two or three a year. But I found your channel about 6 months ago and it’s been a very surreal experience for me, because almost every single video you put out has something in it that I needed at that point in time. Whether it was career advice, inspiration, or information I was looking for, you were just there. And even this video hits at me at an interesting point in my life and career. I find comfort in knowing that I’m not alone here, and that what I’m doing means something. Your videos never cease to ease my own struggles, if only for a short time, and give me the motivation to keep creating. Thank you, Cameron. I know very well about how this one positive comment can’t squelch the countless others, but just know that you motivated me to write it in the first place when I would have moved on, like I usually do on this site.

I am going through a divorce right now and am adapting to living by myself, only seeing my kids occasionally, and all that stuff. Ten years ago I was a local musician playing bass in marginal bands. With the sudden glut of free time and grappling with all the complex feelings that go with my situation, I bought a MIDI controller and decided I was going to learn electronic music, sound design, and production. Your channel has been an immense help to me over the past few months and I’ve binged a ton of your videos and have written and recorded a bunch of stuff that I just needed to get out of me but never had a vehicle for. Yeah, the internet sucks and lots of crabs will want to drag you back into the bucket, but I have to say I know I’m not alone in how much your channel has helped me deal with my own shit. So cheers to you, and I look forward to a lot more content.

I know I'm five months late reading this comment, but i hope you are doing absolutely FANTASTIC now!!! I went through a nasty turbulent divorce also and i quit drinking during it. Almost ten years now. . It took everything from me. Mentally, physically, emotionally, and my kids. But now, I'm a thousand times better person, and my former wife is literally my best friend. I get my kids pretty much anytime they're not busy with mom. What I'm getting at is that it is definitely possible to have that life again with your former wife and kids no matter how hard the divorce was. It might take a few years, and a lot of changes within yourself, but there's one word that makes everything worth it . FAMILY. You got this!! 😁

Cameron: I haven't watched yet, but I wanted to say something. Tonight, after I get off work and almost two years after I got my MIDI keyboard a DAW, I am finally going to publish my first real track on yt. It probably sucks big time, but I love it and I don't care. In the last 18 months or so I've been watching your videos here and almost all that I know about making sound happen and making stuff play they way I want, I know from you. You taught me sound design, you taught me to use a variety of instruments, you taught me to experiment with crazy sh*t, and you convinced me that I will be much happier with Bitwig than with other DAWs I tried (I am). At first I doubted that someone with that kind of voice and presence and general grip on things could ALSO be a wise and entertaining teacher, but there you are. Thank you, man. (And I have words for the people who post the things in your thumbnail, but it would not be... courteous of me to say those words.)

I'm a recent subscriber to your channel, and I'm also a nurse who's struggled with major depression and anxiety since going from being a pediatric nurse to a COVID nurse. I've been a musician since I was 9 years old and started playing the drums (and still do), so music has always been a huge part of my life. Long story short, after a long period of suffering through 2020, I finally sought help - It's still a work in progress, but life is unquestionably better. However, part of finally examining my 30-year-long depressive tendencies has been the loss of musical inspiration. I'd not played, let alone written anything for months. Until I watched your video on Mixolydian flat 6. In the days since, I've felt a spark of creativity - I'm sitting at the keyboard/drums every day, even if for only a few minutes, and it's slowly becoming more and more inspiring. So keep doing what makes you happy, there are always people who will hate what you do (nurses included). DM me or something, I'd be happy to talk about my treatment and recovery. And music, of course. Best wishes!

First of all, I just want to say how much you and your channel have inspired me on my musical journey. Your teaching and creativity have always been a spark that keeps my going. That said. I totally understand everything you said about the pressure and colossal workload - all I can say to that is that you need to take care of YOU, and those closest to you, first and foremost. Regarding panic attacks, I know exactly what you've been going through. In the spring of 1994, there was a single moment that split my life into "before panic" and "after panic" when I started to have unbelievably frightening panic attacks as a result of trying to cope with the stresses of being a software developer and commuting 200+ miles per day to and from London (UK) by car or train. The heart palpitations, feelings of suffocation, intense vertigo, unexplained tingling and numbness, sheer terror, and an inability to tolerate crowded spaces were as unexpected as they were terrifying, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Those violent panic attacks stole more than 10 years of my life despite being able to escape the rut to a new life overseas, but I eventually was able to get it mostly under control. I'm sure you have a great support system, but if you ever need a confidential ear from someone who's been through it, just reach out, and I'll be happy to talk with you. You bring so much value to the music industry with your knowledge, skills, and creativity, and I hope you're able to keep going and manage all the negative elements of it. If, like many other KZbinrs these days, you need to take a break for a while to regroup, that's fine, too. Your true fans will still be here waiting for you when you're ready to return. I'm looking forward to listening to your new album, and wish you all the very best from here in Memphis TN :-)

If I wasn't able to exert all the shitty things I've felt throughout my life into music, I wouldn't be here. Being able to literally play out your emotions is such a tremendously positive thing for maintaining mental health. In many ways, putting your emotions into music transforms those thoughts from huge, abstract and scary concepts into something coherent and more easy to grasp. The thought becomes better articulated, less foreign and intimidating, and easier to overcome.
@anthonymetcalf660
@anthonymetcalf660 2 жыл бұрын
People talk about putting emotions into music a lot, but the phrase "play out your emotions" is really helpful to me right now because of the double meaning. I think I was mixing it up with expressing beliefs about your emotions, but I should focus more on expressing the experience of those emotions and it will feel way less forced. As they say, "Show, don't tell".

Negative comments say more about the person writing them than the actual message... remember that. Turning negativity into fuel for your creative fire is an art, just like your productions. Everyone has their own criticism or expectation of how your music should sound so you can't please everyone... This is the exact reason why I've decided to make music anonymously, It's the only way I've found that I can work in peace and helps me just focus on the music. Although being an anonymous artist does mean that you lose real connection with your audience and it can feel really lonely...
@anthonymetcalf660

I'm gonna do the same, but I think it might help to join a band as well or have a separate side project where I'm not anonymous and I just play local unpaid gigs. I love that type of stuff because there's often no stage so the band is right there with the small audience.

It's really hard to know how to respond to such a personal message as this through the impersonal medium of a KZbin comment. From my miniscule forays into social media, I have fortunately only (very) occasionally come across the sort of extreme and unwarranted negativity that you've shared with us today and I recall my pain and perplexity at trying to come to terms with only a fraction of what you must come across regularly. I don't know how to express my sympathy through a keyboard (well, a piano, maybe) but what helps me in such moments is the recollection that the hateful messages are all about the sender, not you at all, and you can be so thankful that you're you, not them.

It isn't until one begins to engage humanity on a mass scale that the realization about how many people are damaged goods becomes apparent. KZbin creators have the ability to block commentors. Like Actual Kevin, I’m in my 60’s w/ a 50-year interest in synthesis. One thing you need to give yourself credit for is being an inspiring teacher. I always come away from your videos with inspiration to try something new, or simply to persevere and let the chips fall where they may. Maybe I won’t complete my album before I die, but I’ll have had more fun with it, for which I thank you! Sorry about the panic attacks! I’ve seen up close how devastating they can be. I’m glad you’ve found your way through. But if you ever do burn out, remember you don’.t owe us anything, and you’ll be missed and appreciated for your past contributions! In the meantime, I always look forward to your next video.

Cameron --- you are a source of inspiration from a multitude of angles for me... personally and here... I can relate to your state of anger and burn out and fear and uneasiness to an intimate level. What I learned, in my industry and experience, is that a creative process is the catalyst to resetting your brain back to default. We build these concepts and ideas in our heads and we give them importance and assign weighting to them... we then give them our emotions, time and energy... without realising that we are no longer driving the train... The human being I see in front is in "this" moment now, is truly beautiful, sensitive and strong... and I love this human being... and the art, thought and kindness it inspires in me... I am lucky I found you Sir

This video resonates so much with me. I've been struggling with anxiety and ocassional depression for the last 2 years and the global situation now with all that is happening is not helping. I also like to play with music since this is only for me a hobby but I think with this video telling your experience and how you have channeled your emotions into your music I believe I should do the same with the time I have left. I don't want to get professional, I just need to express and communicate emotions, the ones I have. I don't want to say that I'm totally decided because I know what it is to being consistent to finish tracks and not just play and finish one a year as I do but... this video of yours surely is moving some machinery on my mind. I believe it is a great idea you had and I congratulate you for your album, as I'm sure getting what you have inside you into music must have been a challenge in terms of judging your own work, since it is supposed to somehow align with what you are feeling in the moment.

The beauty in me see's beauty looking at you, the ugly in me see's ugly when I look at you. So in a way everything, the good and the bad, are just a reflection of my own beliefs. You strike me as a very conscious person, when I listen to your video intro's. The panic attacks can be a indication of a dying ego. I see it like music comes trough me.....I didn't create it but it came trough me......it looks personal but to be honest, 'my' most beautiful music were unexpected presents.....soon claimed by ego saying 'I made this music'' I'm so glad this beautiful and inspiring youtube channel comes trough you!

I have a habit of creating tracks or even albums, deciding they're not good enough, and never letting anyone hear them. This was really what I needed to hear to start getting over that nonsense. Thanks and I look forward to listening to your album.

Absolutely wonderful video Cameron! 💎Our lives, struggles, love / hate and journeys can all be the fuel to creativity, and for us…sounds. These emotions materialized into art and sound will often yield the best and most meaningful and honest songs. But it’s indeed a hard journey. Congrats on the wonderful album! 🥃

For the past year I've had an idea in my head for an album and yet the struggle of actually sitting down and getting it out of my head is paralysing. I'll admit that mine is due to depression rather than anxiety, but what you say about it being the most needed when it is hardest is the truest thing I have heard in months. I found your channel in the past month or so and I can not thank you enough for everything you do. From your vst breakdowns to inspirational methods, you are a diamond. Fuck the haters. They don't deserve you x

Thank you for posting this. Really important topics. I have a youtube channel (not this account) and what helped me was when i understood that every negative/hateful comment is written because they feel bad about themselves and want others to feel bad like they do. And that people scrolling youtube feel like it's their world/their space and many people are positive and write positive comments but negative people spout out negativity almost like they have Terrets syndrom because they just write out of reaction and don't understand there are real people behind the videos. Many people like that are just passing through and haven't even taken the time to get to know your channel and it's one reason why they should be igroned and not taken personally. And i'm suspecting most people who write negative comments do that every time they are on youtube as a habit and everyone is a target. And like you said it's weird that people even write nasty comments on a channel that's basically about positivity and education and inspiring people.. but people who feel bad within themselves automatically react to seeing you happy and succesfull by trying to bring you down to their level of unhappiness and not being succesfull. So keep your head up and think of the positivity and inspiration of your channel as a wild fire that spreads to people who continue to spread it forwards and change their lives for the better. Negative people are trying to extinguish your flame but a wild fire can't be put out by a few dumbasses pissing on it :)

❤, I am with you, glad you shared this. My music is the place where I meet myself. I may encounter my fears, and then the meeting turns dark and depressing, but at the same time my work becomes the ground I can stand on. Basically, I create a space to learn how to believe in myself. The greatest thing about it: in the end I get to share a record of my journey with people I care about. This is one of the most rich and sincere communication methods I know, and it's probably why I am doing this. Thank you so much for helping me with it, your honesty and dedication becomes mine. Okay, going back to it 😊

In so many ways, you are a true teacher, you share for the actual point of watching others grow - this is something that is ancient and yet still lost in our times. I want to personally thank you for sharing such harsh moments in life, all too often are people conditioned to get "likes" and "subscribes" that that are all too superficial. They don't feed the soul/spirit/etc. Thank you for posting this, this came at a perfect time for myself and my significant other. They needed to see that when things go down, the right character, can turn that down into an up and so down becomes up. Thank you again so much! You're my fav YT'r for all of my music and otherwise inspirational needs.

Thank you for this video. I must say I am surprised to hear some people respond by hate speech to a video trying to help them in their music journey, made by a master in the subject who is so kind to share his knowledge. It would be interesting to investigate the motives of these people. I sincerely hope you don't let these people bring you down. That would be such a shame. Just know that there are a lot of people like me who watch your videos in gratitude and admiration. Thank you very much by all the high quality guides you were so kind to bring to us! Greetings from Belgium!

Best 13:57 of my life spent listening to someone on their journey...I hear a lot of "you're wasting your time" "your how old and still playin with music"... "do something productive will you"...list goes on. Little does she know my attempt to product music is my way of escaping all those negative emotional moments leading up to my 46 years on earth. Music production is a way to channel my attempt at blocking out those narcissistic comments and allows me to be a better more even keeled adult in this world we live in - thanks for sharing. Your message was a light along a dark road so that I can see for a moment the next bend. Thank you.

Thank you Cameron for being you and let me be part of your journey on this planet through your videos and music. Thank you especially for pointing out, that nobody can express me but myself. Everytime I connect myself with this truth, it touches me deeply - realising, that in fact the only thing what this life is all about is expressing myself, expressing answers to the questions life is asking me... ...and that nobody can judge whether this is bad or good, wrong or right - as it just is.

I sort of watch this channel and a pile of others from a long distance I generally don't comment, but I feel this one and relate pretty hard. I'm not sure how it feels on your end but for me, I have to imagine it's pretty hard to start on a video like and then hard to avoid just venting for half an hour.
