Odd Tinkering

4 жыл бұрын

This week I decided to turn an oil bucket I found from trash into a melting furnace for my casting projects. A little break from restorations videos and good chance to practice some different skills. I'll get back to restorations next week. I got a chance to do a lot of welding and also to get back to metal casting. It has been almost a year since my last attempts.

I like how, even though it's made out of trash, you take the effort to make it not look like it's made out of trash. I like your train of thought: Just because it's made out of trash, that doesn't mean it has to look like trash. Respect!

In the king of random they advised against using cement for the furnace, as any trapped moisture bubble in it could cause it to stream-explode at high temperatures

Big Safety tip: make sure to wear cotton jeans and other non-synthetic cloth to avoid the synthetic materials melting to your skin. Sorry to be grotesque but it's not pretty, nor fun. Better to have pants on fire and burned skin then have the molten metal stuck to melted plastic fused with your skin.

@FrozenFox20
@FrozenFox20 4 жыл бұрын
@@ReasonAboveEverything Yeah it's a thing. Many synthetic fibers actually burn/melt very easily, even a small flame can suddenly melt your whole cloth piece on your skin. Imagine what burning plastic sticking onto your skin would do, that shit can't be just scraped away.

@@ReasonAboveEverything Unfortunately. (graphic advisory) A guy that was at my summer camp in scouting was wearing synthetic socks and accidently poured boiling water onto his legs/shoes. The synthetic sock melting into and fused with the skin to the point where the shoes could not be taken off before he was airlifted to a Hospital. Plastic like threads and high heat do not go together well.

Not bad. The burner should have been placed so it aims more to the side. That way the heat travels around in a circle creating a vortex, thus more evenly heating the furnace.

Nice project. A couple of thoughts: The concrete lid, would be "better" if you had chopped up 1cm lengths of standard 6mm blue polypropylene rope separated into dust like fibres and mixed in to the concrete - when in use there will be thermo stress fractures in the lid, the crack will travel to the next fibre (which has melted and left a hole - plastic remains in the space) and stop spreading - so although there will be cracks they will be of limited length and so not cause the lid to fail. There is plenty of heat lost via the hole, add a stand to at least brew a cuppa tea etc - or enhance the space and cook naan bread and tandoori chicken perhaps. Everyone likes black but if casting at night consider signal yellow/orange for safety. Although not environmentally PC (to say the least) pouring molten ally into an ant's nest is very interesting when you excavate the cast, wood ants in particular.
