Couple weeks ago I found this rusty cast Iron pan from a dumpster. I didn't see any cracks so I thought it's definitely worth saving and of course It makes also nice little video of the restoration and seasoning process. Next week I'll do something more complex again.

I started with by electrolytic rust removal. If you try it, I recommend checking out some tutorials because you are dealing with water and electricity after all. Also as mentioned doing it outside or in well ventilated area is recommended because of the formed gasses. Then I cleaned the pan further with oven cleaner, steel wool and scotch brite. I needed to remove all the old seasoning to get the new seasoning stick properly. I doesn't show too well on the video but at the end the pan is cleaned to the bare metal finish (dark gray instead of black).
After the cleanup I used pig fat or lard to create the new seasoning. I started by heating the pan to 100 degrees CELCIUS. This open up the pores on the cast iron and allows better more durable seasoning. after the pan was heated I put on the fist layer of pig fat. then I baked the pan in 250 degrees for 30-60 minutes and let it cool for a moment (not nearly to room temperature). I reaped baking and recoating 5 times, until I was happy with the results.
I tested the pan by making "finnish pancakes" which are basically crepes but slightly different I used pre-made powder to speed up the baking process. That's why it looks like it's only flour and water (it's not).
Thanks for checking out my video once again! Please, if you liked my video, consider subscribing and leave a like and a comment!

I have a small cast iron pan I've had in my life since I was abouth two years old. I'm 29 now, and the seasoning on it from three decades of oil and stuff is indestructible. I've made chili in it, heavy on tomatoes and acidic stuff, and it's even seen the dishwasher. Still it's just and black and well broken in as ever with zero rust. The thing just does not care. My friends ask me why I take a five pound pan hiking and camping but at this point it's like an old friend. Even fell out of my pack once hundreds of feet down a mountainside, it still didn't care.

@@jessi330 Yes you can. That's a myth. Years ago when soap was riddled with harsh chemicals you couldn't. Nowadays it's perfectly fine. * Dish soap used to often contain lye which would strip the seasoning, ie the plastic like substance. You can't even use lye with plastics...Because of that very reason...So you don't really understand what you're saying steven. It's used to clean a cast iron right down to the bones, at which point you would need to season it all over again. Check your facts before calling lies. Lye is 100% a caustic chemical and shouldn't be handled with bare hands...just one of multiple reasons why it's not used commonly in dish soap anymore.

The electrolytic reaction is quite complex. There are several reactions taking place at the voltage you dials in there (7.3 volts, which is quite overkill and may lead to many adverse side reactions; but who cares - it's an old pan :). The main reaction you are wanting to take place is the full reaction below (which is only an estimated guess, since many different iron oxide reactions can occur): 1) 4 Fe(0) + 6 O2 --> 2 Fe2O3 More specifically, in the electrolysis of iron and iron oxide: 2) 4 Fe(0) + 3 O2 + 2 H2O --> 4 Fe(III)O(OH) (bubbly red film in your water)... which decomposes slowly to Fe2O3 (red iron oxide, rust) when dehydrated. Now, it important to note which electrode the anode and cathode in a galvanic/electrochemical cell (batteries), which discharges spontaneously, verses an electrolytic cell, where the cell is "charging" using an external potential. Hence, in either case, the cathode is defined as the electrode electrons are flowing in and the anode is where the electrons are flowing out. Therefore, reduction always happens at the cathode. In a galvanic cell, the red "positive" electrode is the cathode (electrons flow in) and the black "negative" electrode is the anode (electrons flow out). In an electrolytic cell, the red electrode becomes "negative" (-) at is considered the anode (electrons flow out), and the black "positive" (+) is considered the cathode (electrons flow in). You'll notice the flow of electrons is opposite for each these two types of cells. This becomes easier to understand when thinking about how a battery operates. Batteries store charge and when they are used they "discharge" spontaneously (definition of a galvanic/electrochemical cell). However, when driving an unfavorable chemical reaction (turning rust back to iron), the cell is essentially being "charged" back up, which requires a reverse in electron flow using an external power source. This change of current flow reverses which electrode becomes the cathode and which becomes the anode by definition. This is the reason why you see the rusted pan plugged into the "negative" terminal, because it needs to be the cathode in order to reduce iron oxide back to iron (make electrons flow INto iron). (The red (+) electrode is considered the anode in this electrolytic cell set up). **Thank you @OddTinkering, for correcting my mix up. This is a good reminder for me :) The two half reactions at each electrode are: Anode side (positive, red terminal): 4 Fe(0) (normal iron) -> 4 Fe(III) +12 e (electrons are produced to head to the cathode) Cathode side (negative, black terminal): 2 Fe2O3 + 12e- (electrons pushed from anode oxidation) --> 4 Fe(0) (pure iron) + 3 O2 (another explosive gas you were seeing) Now, there is another main reaction happening at that high voltage you set, the electrolysis of water. This extra voltage (potential) is being fed into the water molecules as well and breaking them apart, as shown below: 3) 2 H2O --> 2 H2 (g) + O2 (g) The two half reactions are (general equation): Anode: H2O -> O2 + 2 H+ (acidic protons) + 4 e-. (these electrons head to the cathode, black terminal side) Cathode: 2 H2O + 4 e- -> H2 (g) + 2 OH Overall reaction: 2 H2O --> 2 H+ + 2(OH)-. This is a general equation for neutral pH. However, it is known that autoionization occurs spontaneously, and can be induced by the electric field around the anode or cathode causing separate reactions to take place. Additionally, it is know that there are several different electrolysis reactions that can take place, depending if the water solution is basic (has excess hydroxide ions) or acidic (excess hydronium ions). The one given above is a combination approximation of the two. Acidic half reactions: Anode: 2 H2O -> O2 (g) + 4 H+ + 4 e-. Cathode: 4 H+ + 4e- --> 2 H2 (g) Basic half reactions: Anode: 4 OH- -> O2 (g) + 2 H2O + 4 e-. Cathode: 2 H2O + 4 e- -> 2 OH + 2 H2 (g) If you add both of these acid and basic half reactions you get the general equation given above. However, regardless of the chemical route taken, the result is hydrogen is produced at the cathode while oxygen is produced at the anode. Hence, producing the exciting explosive fireballs, which everyone should have fun with in small amounts! (Small amounts for safety). The purpose of adding sodium chloride (table salt) is to increase conductivity to allow the flow of electrons and ions through the solution. It does not participate in the chemical reaction, only flow of current (unless the electrolyte you are using is susceptible to electrolysis at the voltage specified; however, inorganic electrolytes are generally very robust depending on anode and cathode reactions). Only very minimal amounts of NaCl (table salt) are electrolyzed into sodium metal (which reacts with water into sodium hydroxide, which would make your water basic (you should do a pH paper test before and after, it would be interesting. However, the result may not be conclusive since both FeO(OH) and NaOH will lead to basic water. FeO(OH) is slightly soluble in basic conditions). I may have gotten carried away, but I hope you enjoyed learning a little about some electrochemistry! :)

@jaykneegarner2479
@jaykneegarner2479 4 жыл бұрын
Suzy Q They do but for the most part you want to fill them in! The shiner and more glasslike the skillet is the less likely it is to stick. If you compare the difference between a antique Grizwald or Wagner cast iron skillet that’s been regularly used and properly maintained! Vs. say a new Lodge brand skillet you’ll find that the lodge skillet is quite rough looking and feeling. This is due to the fact that the lodge skillet isn’t as finely ground/polished as the antique skillets. If you ever buy a cast iron skillet( highly recommend) I would look for a antique skillet that’s been well cared for than a new one! I have used both and highly prefer the antique skillet over the new ones! My lodge skillets are after 10 years of regular use only about half way to being smooth as glass. It’s taken many years of seasoning and use to build the carbon layers to where they will fill the pores and things won’t stick.

The electrolysis was pointless. Vinegar would work better, but you can just use an electric drill with a wire brush attachment and do the whole rust removal job in about five minutes. At some point you have to make sure EVERY bit of rust, old seasoning or baked on grot gets removed and this is easiest done with a power tool. The actual seasoning shown wasn't great but four coats will do the job.

I had no clue that you should treat the pan with fat to get a nonstick surface. Definitely gonna treat my cast iron pans with this
@danaellenwood1260

Save your Bacon fat, drip it through a fine strainer to get all the excess bacon bits out, keep it in the refrigerator in a jar or Tupperware container or the like. after cleaning your cast iron heated on the stove when hot and a layer of bacon fat all over, let cool on the stove. The best way to store cast iron is to have a piece of butcher paper between it and whatever you put on top of it , or if you have a pan rack hang it up and make sure you keep moisture away from it or it will rust again. that'll keep it non-stick and it will not feel tacky it will be nice and slick. Do not use vegetable oil to season it ends up being very tacky and sticky Bacon fat or lard is the best.

I have one similar that I restored a couple years ago. I had no idea what it was used for so I use it to fry eggs.

You know that I have issues with fried eggs. The pan I use is cured. Yet somehow I keep getting the egg white sticking. The previous day the eggs slide like marbles on ice and the next day I have to use the spatula. Wierd. It's a standard joke in my house. Possibly I need that special needs egg pan
