This style of journal has kept me committed to journaling almost daily for the past month, which is the longest and most consistently I’ve journaled in a while. I’ve found this method is the most fun for me because it's so in alignment with my lifestyle and aesthetic. The daily structure I follow gives me a foundation for where to begin so I’m not staring at a blank page feeling lost. I love to have a monthly overview, a weekly overview, and then a daily page, which can include but is not limited to daily to dos, quotes, lyrics, and memories. And then of course some kind of art like simple doodling, painting, collaging, adding fabric, ephemera, photos, and my personal fav, STICKERS. There’s also not a rigid set of rules I have in place so I can create freely with no pressure. I love just decorating each page in a way that feels free to be imperfect, which makes me feel like a kid again.
I do hesitate slightly in calling it a “junk” journal because I’m not using 100% junk like technically a junk journal would be. But it’s also more than just a regular writing or art journal or traditional planner, it’s kind of a hybrid of all the above and then some, so I just call it my junk journal or junk journal planner!
This kind of journaling method is definitely not for everyone, but I think one of the reasons why it works for me is because my brain can be very chaotic and I love being able to translate that chaos onto paper. It also is so helpful for me to be able to write down things I need to get done or ideas I have because if I don’t, they tend to stay on a constant loop in my mind. And then decorating the pages just gives the list-making that much more excitement and appeal for me.
Anyway, if you’ve been thinking of starting your own journaling journey, I hope this gives you some inspiration to just start. Don’t overthink it!! You don’t need anything fancy. You can literally start with a pen and paper and some scrap paper or junk mail, and let your art blossom from there!
