Learn all you can from your grandmother while you still can! Mine are gone now and I really regret not asking them a million more questions when I could have. Specifically, I'd ask her about gardening and canning, I bet she knows a lot. Don't be like me when I was young and think those days will never come again. They are coming. Learn all you can from her while you still can. I'd suggest recording it also to show your kids and grand kids someday. They'll enjoy seeing their great grandma and if you're like me, you'll cry all the way through it missing her. God bless you both!

My dryer stopped working so I setup a line under my porch and carport. This was 2 years ago and have decided this works fine and have not replaced my dryer. I need to setup an off grid washing system like yours. Best part of solar drying is that I save hundreds of dollars by not using an electric dryer.

As a child I helped my mother as she used her wringer washer and then hanging the clothes on the line. This bought me so much joy and I horrify my neighbors that I still hang clothing on the line. Dear Heidi, I don't know how you find the time to everything you do. you have the same energy that my mother had. Right up until she passed to her eternal life, she had more energy than anyone I knew. Thank you for this inspiration. Keep safe and healthy.

I love the look of your old-fashioned washer, too ! I'd enjoy using that method if I was younger....but my bad back would never cooperate these days. However! I hang our laundry to dry outdoors most of the year. During Winter, I hang it indoors in our upstairs back bedroom. We have a suspended ceiling in that room from which I can hang hangers. I also have 4 racks & an over-the-door rack. I run the ceiling fan to create air movement. I haven't owned a dryer for 27 years.

When I was a child, a neighbor lady had one of those old wringer washing machines. She'd wash a load, wring the clothes out, drain the machine and fill with clean water to rinse that load. She'd then leave the rinse water in the machine and use it as the water for the next wash load.

I just love this setup. I use a five gallon bucket and a hand agitator to do all my laundry. My grandma had double zinc tubs with built in washboards. She had a 1952 maytag round washer with the ringer setup and I loved helping her every week. I love doing my wash by hand but its just me so it isn't too hard.

This is the exact same set up I have and it is amazing. I have my wringer on a hinge so I can swing it right and wring my rinsed clothes out right into a laundry basket. It's so nice. I collect rain water and it stays hot in Southeast Texas during the summer months to use for washing and use my hose to fill my rinse bucket.

That's the same baffle our new local friend gave me at his yard sale last week. Gosh, 30 years ago, I had an old metal one from Lehman's (before they sold the plastic ones) but it wasn't nearly as good as this one. I think I'm the only person in this town, other than the Amish outside of town, who always hangs their washing on a clothesline. I always have. What a great lesson on how to do laundry in the old way.

I have the antique version of your wash stand with a mangel and two wash tubs. Two years ago, my electric washer broke down. I used the antique, non electric version for 3 months. The only reason I have a new electric washer is my son came home for Christmas and saw how I was washing clothes and came home from a trip to town with a new washing machine for me as a Christmas present. I was not planning on replacing the electric machine, we have had 3 in the past ten yearsand, I am tired of cheap, crappy appliances. I also found that the antique set up got our clothes cleaner. I have the antique plunger type agitator and a scrub board which work so much better. Seriously, out of curiosity, I put a couple of my t shirts freshly washed in the electric machine into the antique set up and agitated them for ten minutes. The water was seriously dirty ! On my antique stand, the part Patrick made out of sheet metal to direct the water from the wringer into the tubs, is made of wood and it pivots to funnel the water into either tub needed. I thought that was ingenious.

I had a manual dial electric washer. I put clothes in small wash cycle as prewash. I only left cloths to wash around 5mins. Then I moved dial to spin nasty water out. Short rinse, then spin out. Started over on regular size wash & let it cycle through. I had a really nasty job. I really do not like digital washer. I have a backup laundry set up like Heidi's. God bless.

I had thought about getting one of these but I hadn't thought about a wringer messing up the buttons! I don't have a lot of buttons on my clothes but I definitely have them on my uniforms for work. If I lived where I had a lot of space, I think I might develop a setup with a bike-powered spin dry machine to use the same centrifugal force a machine washer does but run it with the bike.

For many years we lived in a town that didn't allow washing machines because there was no town sewer system (everything was cesspool...so we washed everything in the bathtub with a plain plunger. I wish I had this setup. It was long before internet, and no one local knew about hand washing, and no local stores sold wringers. Most people would drive 1/2 hour to the closest laundromat once or twice a month.

I have been wanting a setup like this for at least a year now. We're a family of 8 and our washer started to go last week. Off to the local antique stores I went yesterday. I found a folding wash stand with the wringer in great shape for a whole $45. I grabbed a couple of bins to finish it off at Tractor Supply. This afternoon my husband started a load of laundry in the modern machine. It just didn't have the power to agitate the load and was louder than a week ago. I brought out my new setup and put it to work. The 4 youngest kids and I spent the whole afternoon washing laundry. It came out cleaner and faster than the machine. It was such a fun chore on a hot day, we're going to keep going with it until it's too cold. After that, I'm going to have hubby make me an inside setup much like yours. I'll still get a modern machine for large items and for busy days, but I will primarily wash with the new setup. The one thing we're adding to our setup is a prewash bin. Some of our laundry gets pretty dirty, so it will be nice to have a couple kids using scrub boards to prewash some of the dirtier clothes.

Great set up! Wonderful tip on how to send items through again doubled up... like the reverse of making pasta! Love those handy man types ( and women!) who know how to make things like this washing area into reality. I have a vintage (1980's is vintage, hard to believe...) top loading washer and dryer that usually work just fine, but we are needing parts that are on order. I have been doing the laundry in our bathtub using a large wash board. Hot ( even melted and heated snow water in winter when the power is out) and cold water... a built in drain... and a hanging drip dry area for shirts on hangers on the shower head, all right there. 😁 Not a big deal, until it comes to wringing out the water. UG! (These hands aren't quite what they used to be... ouch. ) So I got a nice new 'industrial' wringer that clamps onto things, and the trick is to mount it to a board that can straddle the bathtub without wobbling all over...and leaving room for the crank to move. It sure makes one appreciate all of the work involved with washing clothes and towels! (No wonder great grandma was always tired!😅 ) I have an accordion kind of drying rack that I can move by the heat, or with a fan aimed at it to dry indoors, and weather permitting they dry out on the clothesline. Perhaps I might try your set up eventually ~ I really like the rustic look. 💕

We rarely get snow, that is not the problem here, we get rain, lots and lots and lots of rain all winter long so hanging clothes outside is totally pointless that time of year. Our average annual rainfall is 120", we can get up to 160". This is why I have two clothes lines inside the house in front of our wood stove that have been there for about 24 years or more

Anything brand new is clean enough to use or washing clothes. Even a toilet plunger. But a sink plunger is a good length.

Yes, I have used a sink plunger in the past when I was trying it out with a mop bucket. It worked well for that but the mop bucket did not squeeze enough water out of many of the clothes so we decided to upscale the design and I wanted a vintage agitator to go with it

winter water-drain into a bucket and flush the toilet, cuts on water use and a small amount of electric, when I lived in one little town, we were charged for the amount of water we used, and than a bill for an equal amount of what that went into the sewage, now if your watering a garden where the water was going to the ground, we were paying a sewage bill, they would put a meter on the lines to record what didn't make the sewage(yet another bill, so it I was going to pay for sewage, saving bath water as well as wash water, cut our bill a little more

It looks rustic, wringer needs a stable stand so that is great. I wonder why y'all didn't just get a light weight heavy duty double utility/laundry sink with legs. Just scoot up the wringer over a plastic/steel tub and wallah easy to move, designed to drain fully, and some even have knock outs for faucet with braided supply lines. Though that one is very charming cabin look. For me light weight for moving inside and out is just more convenient. If it needs to be cute you can paint them and add baskets underneath. Though that one is very charming cabin I would use those tubs as raised planters for carrots and beets now that they have a nice drain hole in them.

an out door baking oven can be done, outdoor cooking can be done washing clothes by hand must be my least desirable things! Yes I did already, but it saves me so much time to throw it into the washing machine! Yes I hang it out or in the basement, the dryer is just a convenient box to store things on LOL And to think women would wash at the creek.... how spoiled I am! Watched a video on how laundry used to be done, how they laid all the whites out into the son and kept them wet with a long handled dipper..... And they did not wash at all during the really cold winter months, thus a large dowry was the thing to have, but oh the loads come warm weather again....

My grandmother when I was little had an electric washing machine down in her basement. It was one of those ones that suck the clothes through like crazy with the rollers. Oh I was scared to death of that device! I just watched your homemade Peppermint patty candy video! Thank you so much for that. I am definitely going to be making those soon. Like I said I can’t eat sugar so I have to figure something else out. I understood what you were saying about it needing to be in the white chocolate. I don’t think that coconut sugar is the answer? Maybe date sugar? But I’m gonna tell you what this coming week I will figure it out. I am a mint and chocolate girl through and through!!!!

Rain Country Oh I haven’t made it yet but I do believe I have it figured out. I’m not going to put any sweetener in the cocoa butter, dairy milk, and vanilla portion. I’m going to put all the sweetening into the cocoa powder portion. I will use honey like you did. Now that I have quit eating sugar. Things that are only half as sweet people are really sweet to me.

It may have been, when it comes to such things, we have to do what is best for us. While I has strong arms, I have weak wrists due to dome issues during my first pregnancy so hand wringing everything is hard on them. Does not make my way wrong or the only way, it makes my way best for me, same goes for your own way

Our washing machine hasn't needed repaired so far but our dryer has. Things take days to air dry here and sometimes smell moldy. Our yard stinks of dog poop from our neighbor's dogs and it tends to be muddy and algae covered in our yard and sidewalks so I don't hang anything outside. They just let them run loose and don't clean up after them. I have some things that need to be hand washed and air dried like the two red babydoll lingerie sets I bought in September to have them in time for Lee's and my anniversary and his birthday which are both in November. I know shipping can be slow on some items and I wasn't sure they would fit my large bust (I have a 14 inch difference between my underbust measurement and the fullest part of my bust and a 15 inch difference between my bust and waist; I buy tops and dresses according to my waist size and hope they stretch enough to fit my bust too; if tops are too loose on me they make me look boxy shaped as they will hang straight down from the sides of my bust). I just use my stock pot, dish soap, and gently agitate them with just my hands. They are sheer and lacy so have to treat them delicately. To get the moisture out I gently roll them up in a towel. They do air dry much faster than other things. My favorite bra which is The Breast Nest (it gives no lift but with that there's no sweat; heat rashes there are the bane of my existence in hot weather) dries so slowly because it's a thick fabric and very stretchy. The quickest way for thicker things to air dry is to hang them underneath the ceiling fan. I guess because it circulates the air.

Here's my question: If you have loss of electric, how do you have running water? I have a well, but the well pump is electric. Do you have a hand pump also?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead Жыл бұрын
You only need electricity if you are drawing water up from a well. City water is run off of pressure, no electricity needed. However, if we did not have city water, we do have rain water tanks and do have an electric pump for those however, we have solar power as well as gas and deasil generators if our solar power is low due to long dark winter days
