I live in the southeasteen US. I am about 50yo and live in a huge city. My grandmother (b around 1910 in Alabama) did her washing up like this video, but she also had a rinsing bowl. Eating soap isn't good for you. She also called it washing up, so I do as well. I use a dish washing machine, except for delicate items. This also cleans dishes with hotter water than I would be able to manage by hand. In my kitchen, I have 4 types of towels: flour sack towels (loose flat weave), tea towels (flat weave), dish towels (one side flat or waffle weave, one side terry weave), and bar mops (both sides terry weave). They have different jobs. The names of these towels are old names, for example, flour sack towels haven't been made from actual flour sacks since the earlier half of the 20th century. The eggs on counter vs in fridge difference is because US commercial eggs are chemically washed and lose the outer layer of the eggshell. They must be refrigerated. Also, US eggs are likely to come from much, much farther away from the consumer and some of the shelf life would be used up in the absence of refrigeration. Don't forget how enormous the US is compared to the UK. Farm eggs can be left out at room temperature. The outer layer of the eggshell is intact. They come from the local area so the shelf life isn't used up in transit. Thanks for reading this far 💐

Tthe reason people in the UK aren't used to rinsing dishes is that it's not so long ago that we didn't have running water. When it's a chore to fetch water it feels like a waste to use more of it on dishes than you have to. There are still people alive in the UK that grew up without running water in their houses. It's due to the still essentially Fedual nature of British society. Even up to the middle of the last century, houses were built for the 'peasants' as cheaply as those in charge though they could get away with. Outside toilets and no running water was the norm because this was far cheaper than providing modern facilities for the peasants, and the Aristocracy simply didn't care. This is why rinsing is still not always done, especially by those older Brits who quite likely grew up without running water in the house. I'm only in my fifties, and I remember houses like that. It will change, and is gradually. But people tend to do things the way their parents did, and so these things change gradually. It really is only a generation, two at the most, since rinsing meant an extra trip to the well for water.

It allowed your dishes to be fully emerge. That way everything you have to get rid off don't have time to harden and glued. It also allowed you to save a bit of money on water and soap. (Anyway, dishes has to be rinse out, why didn't he rinse his dishes out ? 🫢...🤢)

@oceaneo4603 but why not just use the sink for that? Why does it need a bowl inside the sink? I'm so confused lol 😂😂😂

@@nicki31663 May be because the bowl is cleaner than the sink. Quite frankly, that's a very good question. I don't know the answer.

@oceaneo4603 lol this is where I ended up with my friend as well... she did it because she had always done it, because her parents had always done it etc etc... which started me wondering when and why this actually started being a thing! Any light you could shed on it would be very much appreciated!

I agree. The only reason I can think is that the plastic bowl stops one from cracking cups etc in sink? It keeps stainless steel clean? We were only talking about this recently. I have no idea. Aussie.

The Americans are all talking about soap. We use detergent for washing up, soap is something entirely different over here. It obviously doesn't harm us because we are not all, 60+M, ill. Are you lot allergic to logic?

Dish soap and dish detergent are the same thing.

Your comment reminded me on why the fuck you brits called the fruit pinapple when the rest of the world call it nanas/ananas 😵💫 About the dishwashing thing, Well, I guess you Brits are immune to basic logic 💀😂 I used to cook lime soup lunch for a British couple, and one day I added a drop of soap in the cooking, 😆 and they say it tasted better that day 🤣 i call it limey soap soup 😂😂😂

What??? You dont rinse the soap off your dishes before setting them to dry??? 😬 Ewwwwww

What are Americans on about? Why am I going to waste gallons of water on rinsing the soap off when I can just wipe it off? Its not that hard, stop being so wasteful. Only time it's ever tasted soapy was when I left my plastic protein shakers to soak in it, took me ages to get that taste out, other than that it's never an issue letting pots dry of their own accord. Never used a bowl in my life tho it just doesnt fit everything in waste of space

Brits : *don’t want to waste a gallon of water to rinse soap of dishes Also brits : * bathing in a fully-filled bath tub You guys are unconsciously dumb and denial sometimes

It's called 'washing-up liquid' because we don't say 'doing the dishes' we say we're doing the washing-up. But why didn't you rinse?
