Omg yes, I completely agree! You absolutely need to take care of yourself when you're working as a nurse and it starts in nursing school. Studying can be super effective when it's spaced out and you make time for yourself in between. Going hard 24/7 is the fastest way to burnout 😕

Our instructor told us to NEVER spend more than 45 min at a time in a single subject. When we do hit that max 45-60 minutes, then it’s time to break and allow our brains to absorb it and not reject any future information we try to take in. That was a great suggestion and very important. You can’t cram and expect to retain any of it.. love these videos. I

It's horrid how kids are in school for 18 years and rarely taught HOW TO STUDY!! I've met people who don't know how to read something and identify the key points - they highlight every word. There are so many ways to study and it's life changing to figure out what works for you. Test taking stress is huge for way too many. For everyone older (50's+) we didn't have videos and presentations or WWW, we only had lectures that we couldn't record. You're listening to a new subject and trying to take notes at the same time - nearly impossible to do well. I so wish I had the resources available now back then.

Never look too deeply into any of the questions. Take exactly what you see and hear from face value and remember you are not the doctor who diagnoses it all. you are there to watch the patient and notice changes. Watch for safety needs. Report to Dr anything that is not looking correct, sounding correct or the patient has a need you feel should have the Dr's attention. As soon as I stopped trying to figure out what was wrong and look deeply into each patient I did get al la's but I had to just notice what the test would ask me. Not look beyond that. What are you seeing, what is going on, and what steps do you take for that problem? But not trying to figure it all out. What have you learned? Never go beyond your scope. The teacher said, '' A Dr hears hoof sounds snd thinks it is zebra, but the nurse will hear hoof sounds and think it may be a horse" Do not read too far into it all. That is for the doctor not the nurse. I only add this as for some reason it sure did change every part of my nursing classes and luckily I found it immediately and realized how hard I made it all, by trying to look further into everything than needed or that I was supposed to be doing. Relax, learn and pay attention to what is said, or what you read and do not allow yourself to get so deeply into it that you are looking beyond what you 'need' to know.

I really relate to the old method of writing down notes from the book. That is exactly my dilemma, I take so long to finish writing my notes. This way you will be efficient in studying for exams. The nursing program is different from other undergraduate degrees (mine was exercise science). In nursing, there is so much information to cover. I love the advice about sleep. I noticed a difference. Doing everything that you mentioned will not make a difference if you are sleepy the day of the test. Sleep and being dehydrated will dig your brain and this will cause us to make silly mistakes on exams. So many times during test reviews I looked at my exam and wondered why the heck I picked a certain answer. Lol my mind was clear. Guys getting rest is better for us than doing that extra studying. We tend to actually know more than we think. Get your rest! Take care of yourself.

Back in A&P 1 a few years ago I went from making C’s on test while studying up to 10 hours for one test to making A’s while only studying a few hours by creating questions stemming from the review. I used the same process in Microbiology except no review this time so required a bit more time but wow! Night and day difference. You are totally right! I would see question on the test that were similar to questions I had made up. Makes you feel very smart 🤓

DO NOT let people choose or influence your steps in nursing school negatively, because unfortunately it is such a competitive major and many people will act like it is a competition. I'm on my first semester and it's so hard, my semester nos divided into 3 blocks that last 4 wks, 3 classes per block. The next block starts during finals of the previous one. It's not an accelerated program, but it's so fast I have a hard time catching up. For this now 2nd block, professor's don't have powerpoints or recorded lectures. We just have chapters that are due that day and they give us case studies, with little guidance. I don't know how to study now. In prereqs I learned that I learn better with drawing things. I would take notes in class, rewrite my notes in color and draw multiple silly pictures to help me remember, but I don't even have enough time to take notes now and I don't even know what to focus on. I'm afraid I'll be focusing on something entirely different from what the professor wants us to. I'll try your method, but do you have any tips on how to create study guides from the book only? Do you formulate your questions after you review book and PowerPoint. I guess I am trying to figure out if you read review material first and then make questions?

Hi there! The questions I came up with were content questions, I just rephrased the material as questions and then used the class powerpoints to answer the questions. I formulated the questions after I reviewed the lecture material from the book and powerpoint. I did use spaced repetition when possible but since our exams were a week apart usually I could only space it out like 2-3 times for each exam!

Hi Thalia! Could you by any chance discuss if grades matter in looking for a job? as in will the employer ask for your transcripts, how much do grades really matter, etc? I just did my first written assignment in nursing school and I thought I'd at least get a high credit, and I got barely a pass - a grand total of 58.9/100... oh to my terror. its so discouraging and since I know nursing employment can be really competitive especially to new grads.. can you provide some advice or discuss about this topic, please? thank you.

I’m having trouble creating my own study questions. Any tips? Also, were your class exams NCLEX style questions? Or different? Thank you for all the information, is really helpful
@ThaliaOrtiz3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I would try to model study questions after the questions you usually see on your exams. For example, my program always had questions on our exams about nutrition and risk factors for diseases, so I would try to make questions based around that. Try to think about what your professor might ask on an exam and go from there and try to rephrase your lecture notes as questions 😊 And our exams had NCLEX style questions with different formats like select all that apply, hot spots, etc.

Do you still write notes in addition to making questions with the app you mentioned?

When I was in my last semester we were learning critical care which built on fundamentals/med surg so I mostly used Notion to review key concepts I had already learned in previous semesters. But if there was something I had a really hard time with, I would make charts and mind maps like in this video: kzbin.info/aero/PLQHQuKhubl7wrEzQK5TsP7l9oNOl6q8ga hope that helps! 😊

Hi! I've been using active recall for a while. The way I go about it is for example what are the symptoms/ causes/ risk factors of hypertension. I also use the headings and subheadings of PowerPoint slides to help me come up with questions. Like what is the mechanism of action of a toxin or what are the characteristics of red blood cells . I try to use questions to tackle and learn new information and as Thalia said if I've managed my time well move to practice questions. Hope this helps

@ThaliaOrtiz3 жыл бұрын
I don’t because it’s been a while since I took it ☹️ but I’d recommend doing a lot of dimensional analysis practice problems to get comfortable with conversions. Also reading the chapter before class helped because it helped solidify the lecture instead of going in blind. Hope that helps!

@ThaliaOrtiz4 жыл бұрын
I tried to study for the most content heavy classes like patho and med surg by reviewing a few powerpoints for an exam each for like 30 mins-1hr and the next day I would review the remaining powerpoints. Then I would make questions like how I showed in the video with Notion and go through those questions every few days using spaced repetition in the days leading up to the exam. Is that what you mean?

Nursing school is based on 6 point grading scale instead of standard 10 point grade scale. 80% is on the cusp of a C instead of being a B on 10 point scale
