Through weekly video essays, "Making It Work" showcases how real people have upgraded their personal or financial lives in some meaningful way. Making your life work for you doesn't mean getting rich just for the sake of it. It means making the most of what you have to build a life you love, both in your present and in your future. And while managing money is a crucial life skill for everyone, there's no one "right way" to go about it - you have to figure out what works best for you, full stop.

1. accept you may be working 60+ hours a week and work out what that means 2. give yourself a cut off time everyday 3. allot specific time to side hustle everyday 4. be efficient with your time 5. avoid staying up late 6. carve out a space for work 7. ask for help 8. find ways for legitimate self care

4:46 Even going broader than this, this kind of hustle just isn't possible with kids. It just won't work. You'll feel incredibly guilty for spending so little time with them. So yes, do it now, make that crazy coin while you have the time to do so and invest it as much as you can now while you can still work 60, 70, 80 hours a week. I worked a schedule like this before having a family and it was fine, but soon I had to pick two between my family, my full-time job, and my side hustle. I picked my family and my side hustle and now I couldn't be happier. Financial and time freedom just isn't offered in modern day corporate America.

These tips really help. It’s how I’ve been managing an 80+ hr work week. I’m currently working a full time job and have 3 side hustles. I can kind of make it work because they’re all remote work, I stay with my parents and because of Covid, I’m cautious about having too crazy a social life. So work keeps me occupied and I don’t mind working to 2am in the morning. I know it’s not sustainable long term so I’m only continuing this until the end of the year by which I’ll be able to put a nice deposit on an apartment and having a very nice investment portfolio in place. I practice self care by sleeping in on Saturdays and going out to see a friend or just take a walk. Or I spend time with my family in between work breaks. I’ve also relegated some easier tasks to my sister who can then earn some extra money and ease the burden on me. I haven’t yet found the perfect balance yet but I know this is temporary and since I don’t really have anything else to do, I might as well give my financial portfolio a nice boost.

@@JenJayBanks Yeah I never understood people who loved every minute of their crazy long, no-sleep corporate workweeks. When I was in it I didn't mind it, but I definitely didn't "love" it. Unless there's a true path to big money reasonably soon before you're too old to enjoy it, I don't think sacrificing all those hours of one's life away from one's family is worth it. At least in my field, people were grinding away week in and week out for partners making millions while they themselves made a tenth of that. Didn't sit right with me eventually. Hence why I quit.

I used to work over 60 hrs a week. I was able to take multiple vacations during those years due to good time management. It took me years to burn out but I still burned out. YES. Thank you. The 40 hour work week is as long, if not longer than many other cultures. And even when people aren't actually AT work, they're checking their emails, never really getting to relax. I keep up very strict boundaries between my work life and my personal life. I do not check my email on nights and weekends. I try my best to not think about work. I am thankful to have a boss who is okay with this, and even encourages it. When I'm stressed out, unhappy, and unrested, my work isn't any good anyways. And the more we give into working unreasonable hours, the more we set the precedent that working 60 hours a week is reasonable - and it's not.

I work 60+ hours a week for 9 weeks a year (in the Before Times) because I work as a seamstress at my local renaissance festival. Honestly, I'm glad that the faire was cancelled this year, because I'm working as a solution architect now, which has me pulling 45-60 hours a week on incredibly technical work. I meet with clients for 8 hours a day sometimes, and still have work to do outside of meetings. I'm leading 7 projects when most of my coworkers are on 1-4 (and 4 is seen as too many!). When I'm not in meetings, I'm writing documentation, testing functionality, preparing for demos, reviewing data, working with product support ... it's a lot on my brain. All of this advice is really helpful for people who just work a demanding job, as well. Side hustles are such a challenging thing to balance, but also, working long hours at a single job presents its own challenge. And this contributor has some fantastic tips for both sets of challenges!!

The cut off time advice is the most important one for me (and lot of others as well I'm sure). Back when I freelanced full time, I literally worked from the moment I woke up to the moment I slept (and I only sleep maybe 5 hours on a GOOD day), seven days a week. No days off. No holidays. No after work hours. No AFTER work, period. It burnt me out. It gave me a slew of mental health problems I still carry to this day. If there's nothing else you take from this video, please take the cut off time seriously. THAT's the best and most effective way to avoid burn out.

I keep weekends free for myself and give my self time in the evenings just to relax and unwind before bed even though I wake up at 4am I will go to bed around 9:30/10pm. I personally think its important to give yourself the time to wind down and relax before you sleep whilst still keeping a healthy sleep schedule. I also think is important that you give yourself a day or two off so you can do things you can't when you are working long days. Also if your job is very physically demanding you need to make sure you are eating well and taking a break if needed and possible the same does apply for less active work aswell

And often times the only way to work smarter is to simply delegate the work to someone else, ie swallowing your pride and asking for help. Whats the expectation as far as other life obligations with some of these jobs? I am very involved in my church life and volunteering, certainly 15-20 hours a week. So my 40 hour a week job feels like enough... when I add in my other "commitments" that are important to me, it's certainly 60 hours. If you're working a 60 hours a week, are you also committed to other "life stuff"? or do the extra 20 hours take it up? I've done 60 hour weeks in college, but I didn't do much else. And I certainly wasn't living a regular healthy rhythm of daily exercise, keeping my home put together, eating well, and investing in consistent relationship.
@wintrygarden

I think that your volunteering activity is its own side hustle in this way, even if it's not a "job". Some 60h a week jobs allow for time mid day to exercise, cook, clean, and do other self care tasks. I work ~50h a week most of the time, but my job allows me time to take breaks during the day, start early of needed, or work late to make up lost time. It's just a matter of the specific job/s and how you balance your schedule. Also, her point about delegating can also apply to outsourcing - some folks will work extra hours, but pay for a cleaning service, or get a meal delivery service so they don't have to grocery shop. You can save time in other ways depending on your resources and priorities.

I honestly do think more balance is needed in life. If somebody is forced to work such long hours because of their circumstances - I understand that. But if we have choice than I guess we need to ask ourselves what makes our life worthwile - I think life focused on work only, with a bit of TV as a past-time would be very unfulfilling to me. And I honestly like my work a lot :) So perhaps the question could be - should we work 60 or 80 hours a week? What is the true motivation behind that? I dont buy the argument that it is because of work ethics... Those are good tips to survive those 60 hours without going insane though!

Working any more than 40 hours a week is really damn stupid. There's a point where you don't have a life for yourself anymore, at which point you almost cease to exist as a real person. I won't ever work that much because I would actually like to have a life first, and a job second.

I work with Small Business Owners. For most of my clients, work-life balance is hard. They have fewer resources to manage essential tasks and a finite amount of daily energy to manage them. When your business is your output, knowing what is worth committing your energy to is essential!

Some people do this for years, either out of greed or simply because they have no other choice. Not saying that it's healthy, there will be consequences for sure, but some folks can definitely keep it up.

I came from a workaholic family and even though my country has one of the highest work hours per day in the EU, my parent's work life balance is much closer to what is the norm in the US than in Europe. So seeing my parents give their all to work, has made me feel like I need to do the same to be successful and frankly it's not at all healthy. I'm lucky my manager always tells me to not work during the weekend and doesn't put undue pressure on me to work longer hours even though I do it to myself, however I'm finding it very hard to get out of the mindset of working so much, partially because I love what I do but also because relaxing and not doing anything productive negatively affects my mood, it makes me feel guilty and without purpose and kind of sad even though I have a ton of hobbies to be doing instead. Currently I'm working on my thesis and working full time and that's been busy, but I'm already thinking that once I'm done with the thesis I'll get a student and do some tutoring on the weekends for the fun of it. Even though I don't even need the extra money... All of this to say that I just dunno how to manage having a healthier work life balance to be honest...

some advice ive heard is to work very hard when you're young to find where your limit is. some people are just born workaholics who really like their profession too. nothing wrong with that it's just if you are the workaholic type it's best to learn negotiation skills to leverage yourself as a high productivity person and learn to set boundaries on how much you can give and how much you will give to anything in life. the only way I see high productivity being sustainable is if you stay aware of your mental and physical health and are in tune with your body taking breaks is nothing to be ashamed of either. work can create stress and if it's not managed with release then it can build up and become toxic. that can mean burnout, weakened immune system to diseases, heart attack, cancer and unhealthy habits to cope.

I know you have your opinion about the "work smart not hard" saying but dispute it saying "not hard", it does not literally mean don't work hard. It just means if you are going to burn yourself out trying to complete 10 tasks all at once and having each of them 50% complete in 3 days, work smart and work on one or two at a time and get 8/10 100% complete in the 3 days instead. So I wouldn't discount that saying. A hard efficient workflow will always beat a hard inefficient workflow.

Does it suck working 60 hours a week? Yes. Is it sustainable long-term. No. But from my point of view, as someone who grew up low income, this is what I need to do to break that cycle. I don't want to have 10s of thousands of dollars in credit card debt to survive. I don't want to decide which bills I'm not going to pay. I don't want to rely on my family to help me with money (because they struggle too). This is what I'm doing now to get ahead while my expenses are low. When I get my masters, that will help me make more money, so I won't need to work two jobs (60+ hours) a week

Im lucky enough to still have weekends off, but im worried its not going to be enough time with family. I guess we will see how this goes but IF I have to choose it will ALWAYS come down to family. In asia, people are expected to go overtime everyday. My friends told me they go into work from 8am and leave like 7pm or later. It is part of the culture. My dad work for a bank in asia and he works non-stop everyday (phone calls even on vacation). He roll his eyes when I complain about work...😂 I feel very lucky to be working in the US where there is actually work-life balance. Can't complain.

I'm starting 60-70 work week again, pays well but demanding. I don't know how long I'll last and want to pay off debt before going back to school. It sucks that we are overworking because we are short staffed and so many don't want to work during covid.....I really should expand to investing and finding small streams of income. Unfortunately it is in most cases. Low wages/high cost of living. Decent pay/high demand. It could be multiple small jobs or salary in which case you are exempt from protections hourly employees have. I work salary. When I got promoted I was told I would have more control over my schedule. Biggest lie ever! Now I’m on-call 24/7.

People who benefit from 60+hr work weeks: shareholders and CEO. Lots of saving potential in not having to add another employee and less health benefit/benefits to pay out! OR… you can hire more people and unemployment rate wouldn’t be as high. Also, they created unpaid internships for your benefits. 😉😂
