PSA: I do realize DC's Civil War would have connections to Injustice, Kingdom Come and Public Enemies. Taking inspiration from that and actually placing a governmental talking point on which side is the right one is the route I want to more so go down. I'm even willing to change the reasoning on why Superman would choose the registration act as these details are obviously not set in stone.

I’ll admit I have a Pro-Registration Bias after reading about Police Brutality. It’s one of the reasons I find My Hero Academia interesting because we actually get to see Superhero Registration and it isn’t the dystopian nightmare that usually unfolds in Marvel and DC. We get to see an actual system back up Superheroes. Even without my bias, it seems a bit much for Lex Luthor to be leading the Registration side. Granted, the guy getting into politics usually leads to him using the law as a weapon against Superheroes so it’s completely in character for him. However it feels like it seriously invalidates the pro-registration side. I recognize they have good points, but it feels a bit mute since a villain is behind the bill and thus has ulterior motives. How often does Superhero Registration get backed by a Villain whose plans fall apart the minute the Heroes reveal the true goals? There’s never even any talk of a different bill being passed. And from what I’ve heard? The portrayal of registration after the war was mostly if not completely negative leading to the act’s repeal. Now if I wanted to make an MHA Civil War story, it can’t run on the same premise given registration has been a thing for a long time. On top of that, the Class A kids are such a united group nowadays. A Fanfiction I’ve read had its civil war being a training session dividing the class between heroes and villains. However one topic that constantly gets different views from Heroes in MHA seems to be Vigilantes. Some Heroes are willing to turn a blind eye while others are as tough on them as the law is. And some of the students in class even perform actions which legally are vigilantism. So let’s say that the Naruhata Vigilantes inspired people across Japan after they were central in taking down the Villain Factory and especially after one member, the Skycrawler, becomes the sidekick to Captain Celebrity, a Pro Hero in America. Many citizens become Vigilantes and take on many minor Villains and criminals. It’s an underlying issue that finally explodes during the MHA story. After Stain exposes that many Pro Heroes care about fame and fortune along with All Might retiring as the Symbol of Peace, Vigilantes believe they have to fill the gap of true heroism and start getting organized. Pro Heroes and students at Hero Academies consider the pros and cons of Vigilantes. Like the Naruhata Vigilantes, they handle threats not picked up by Pro Heroes and can even alert Pros and the Police of serious threats. There are even those who consider letting Vigilantes be licensed Pro Heroes. However for every Skycrawler there is a Stain from back when the guy was a Vigilante. Many Villains are found dead and one thing going for the Naruhata Vigilantes was that they had a former Pro Hero, Knuckleduster, to train them. Several groups and individual Vigilantes end up dead. The final straw comes when a massive battle breaks out between a group of Villains and Vigilantes. While some Vigilantes prioritize protecting civilians, others go in for the kill on the Villains. This divided response leads to infighting that allows the Villains to escape. The Pros who arrive are annoyed and move to arrest the Vigilantes. The entire group is arrested, but they’re a popular group to the public as they’ve kept the streets safe when Pros and Police aren’t around. The Hero Community starts to take sides as there are those who want to pardon some of the Vigilantes while others want to start a mass manhunt of them. When one Hero Agency is found harboring some Vigilantes, violence breaks out. The Pros against Vigilantism have the help of the Police and the Hero Public Safety Commission while Pros on the opposing side team up with Vigilantes. Naturally the Villains try to take advantage of things, though the opposing sides are able to form short truces against serious threats. Still, even UA becomes divided. I’m not sure what side Deku and All Might would take though. They believe in pure heroism and would no doubt emphasize with the Vigilantes. However I’m not sure if they would take a stand against the system which makes several good points. Perhaps instead they are the ones who end the war. Deku may have some encounters with Vigilantes which will inspire All Might to make a public statement pushing for a reform to allow Vigilantes to become Pro Heroes. Naturally those who killed would be arrested, but this reform would prevent the creation of new Vigilantes who just want to be Pro Heroes but never got their shot. Those that refuse to join the rest either retire because being a Hero without a system is very tough or become Villains like Stain, fanatically distrustful of the system even when it opens up to them. Pro Heroes are pressured to accept this new change, with many coming to see that several Vigilantes have the same motivations to be heroes. Some Hero Agencies and Schools however refuse to allow former Vigilantes join them. One thing this Civil War story would do better is that it would be more optimistic. The ending allows both sides and the Vigilantes to win. The system is preserved while Vigilantes are allowed to become Pro Heroes, thus meaning they’re no longer breaking the law. Granted a Vigilantes and Pro Heroes won’t be happy, but the majority will be. We don’t even need to have the main characters take a firm stance on either side and instead they can be the ones who will be the fighting. There probably wouldn’t be many if any deaths at all given that Pros rarely kill. Being at war wouldn’t change that.

I prefer the idea that superman is so broken after the darkseid invasion and he feels so guilty for the human lives lost that he actually starts to side with lex over heroes needing to be controlled. That way it's batman that needs to talk him around to realizing what's really happening. It's not "evil superman" per se because he does genuinely think what he's doing is right. Lex could maybe see that guilt and doubt in superman and begin to manipulate him into eventually joining. Batman then would have to recruit whoever is left to show superman what lex is doing.

I like this route better too. If it was just blackmail, any mind reader like Martian Manhunter, or empath like Raven, or even a particularly determined investigator like Question would easily figure out what's up. Kinda like no one figuring out Doc Ock was possessing Peter's body during Superior Spider-Man.

Thanks for sharing your story. A few critiques that I feel that if you would solve them, they could make your story better. 1. Lex Luthor using Superman as a hired gun is a bit of a weak premise if Batman is the greatest detective in the world, I think that he would notice if Superman’s family was missing. I think that was Superman represents, and Batman represents ideologically have enough fertile ground to make them want to fight. You just need to find the proper reasoning. For example, what if the UN (with some puppet strings by Lex Luthor) ask metahumans to be able to monitored with the registry? then you get a clash of Superman being in the light and Batman living in the shadows. 2. I feel the Green Lantern leaving planet earth is rudimentary. If he is protector of the sector, I feel that he would have a leading hand into how this policy would be implemented. I like your idea about authority versus anarchy and showing that thinking style in DC comics. You just need a strong enough inciting incident.

This sort of story would be a great opportunity to put some more obscure characters into the mainstream spotlight. Have Batman, Superman and all those guys be involved, but maybe the main set of POV characters could be guys like Guy Gardner or Mister Miracle or Question or Vigilante or Detective Chimp etc etc. Also, Superman is no stooge - he’d DEFINITELY be scheming with some other Leagers in the background to save his family. He would never take this status quo and roll with it.

I think a DC civil war would work better in a universe like Kingdom Come where a lot of the original Justice league are old and have successors while new, younger heroes are seeking more effective solutions to stop villains. Except we’d remove the 90s esthetic and add a modern spin on it

The premise is certainly interesting, but I'd replace Batman with Wonder Woman. Diana and Clark are the more public figures of the trinity, and I believe the schism would be far greater if they were on opposing sides. Bruce could have died the same way Lex did in Justice League Unlimited, thus removing the person who would have most likely caught onto what Lex is up to.

I like this concept as a sort of political thriller. I can even imagine this story told as a sort of mystery where Superman starts supporting Lex and otherwise acting out of character and we don’t find out the real reason until much later. However it’s not a perfect 1:1 of Marvel’s Civil War, mostly because part of what makes the story so great in comic or movie form is that there are legitimate arguments for both sides and the audience can have fun debating the merits of either side. With this story it’s pretty one-sided. The original pitch that superheroes bring supervillains with them and are therefore dangerous in and of themselves can be argued at least, but when most of the heroes supporting one side are doing so purely out of blackmail or threats, it delegitimizes that point of view. That being said, I could easily see the premise being only slightly tweaked to make for a much stronger point of discussion

DC inspired Civil War with the Justice Leage Unlimited series multipart story. Superman fought captain Atom, "Shazam" and The Question even questioned Superman's moral authority when he went down the rabbit hole. Lex was running for president and of course Amanda Waller and Task Force X/Suicide Squad was all part of that story. Granted it was more about accountability and avoiding a super humans arms race, but I dont think Civ War happens not to long after if that season of the show didnt happen.

I think a tweaked version of the JLU cartoon finale would be a fairly decent analog to a DC Infinity War and Endgame, with the Anti-Life Equation being the story equivalent to the Infinity Gauntlet and the stones. They were not gathering different pieces of the Equation and it's just Luthor offworld but it has a fair amount of the same beats (though it being the climactic buildup of over a decade's worth of material probably does that regardless). Rather than a grand battle with the portals in a final showdown it has the League and Legion united against Darkseid on a global battlefield. You could say the Epilogue episode with Terry and old Bruce is an equivalent torchpassing scene with old Cap handing the shield off to Falcon as well. Not 100% what a DC Infinity War/Endgame would be but probably in the ballpark.

I think this event could end with Luthor winning, and with Batman realizing that if he won, or Superman slipped up, he would lose everything he cared for, sending him over the edge and turning him into what he feared most. So, to prevent this, he decided to surrender and asked the rest of the heroes to do the same, for everyone's sake. Lois (I would pick her and her child being held as the reason behind Superman joining the registration) is shocked by this revelation, learning Luthor had won, and in a later panel, Luthor comes to gloat about how he managed to turn the world's mightiest hero into his personal soldier without having to throw a single fist. But Lois, knowing Luthor, warns that his victory was only temporary, and knows that he has to keep her and Superman's baby alive lest he risk Superman going on a rampage and ending his administration and his life. Luthor of course blows it off, saying by the time he does, he'll have found a way to kill Superman himself. But, she also warns Luthor, and his co-conspirators, Such as Waller (We all know she'd join his side, mostly because of the power she'd gain with Earth's Heroes under her heel) That he will slip up one day. Either by pushing some superhero too far, or doing something that would cause an even greater calamity. But when he does (Even pointing out he will), she points this out to Waller and the like, that he will drag them down with him, and there'd be no way to snake their way out of it. The tipping point of all this is possibly an attack on Atlantis and Paradise Island, resulting in the gods, such as Gaia, deciding Luthor (And by extension, all of humanity) has crossed the line at what they could tolerate, and set loose the ancient titans to wipe the slate clean of humanity. This forces the heroes and Villains alike to join forces to repel the Titans and gods sent to help. During this time, Waller and many of Luthor's Cabinet realize that everything they feared is happening, and knowing that no matter what they do, whether the heroes or Titans win, it'll be the end of their scheme, they release Lois and the Kents (I'd also have Luthor kidnap them as part of his Scheme.), mainly in hopes of being spared some of the blame Luthor will get. This event ultimately ends with the gods deciding to give humanity one more chance (This can come about anyway, power or love and humanity's kindness whatever, I'd leave that up to you), but warn that next time they try and challenge the gods, well, they say they can figure it out. In an epilogue, Lois, with the help of some of the more tech-savvy heroes and villains exposes Luthor's schemes, including her imprisonment, and he and many of his co-conspirators are arrested (Waller being captured by her own suicide squad who, during the chaos, nabbed the detonator to their bombs and destroyed it in front of Waller, showing they can do what they want now) for conspiracy and multiple crimes against humanity, or going into hiding. The Registration Act is amended so that heroes and villains can join the government of their own choice but can remain unaffiliated, alongside new laws to prevent someone like Luthor from taking power again. I'd even imagine a small party on the watch tower being thrown with both Heroes and Villains enjoying their victory (Joker spraying Metamorpho with his acid flower only for him to play along for Laughs, Wonder Woman, Cheetah, Giganta, and Barda drinking down mugs of meed, just basic marryment). Bruce warns that someday someone is gonna try to repeat Lex's scheme, but Clark says that why people like that exist, is to ensure people like that never gain that much power and give people a sense of hope, and a warning to those that would abuse the power given to them for petty reasons. He then asks what they'll be doing about the villains currently in the watch tower, to which, Clark says heroes and villains calling a truce for a day and partying isn't going to bring an end to the world, even jokingly suggesting they make it like an annual event. I'm sure there's a better way to do this, but this is my personal idea on how I'd do a DC Civil War event follow-up event to wrap it up. I'd like any input on it, perhaps I might even write a story about it, who knows, but this idea has a lot of potential. Thank you good sir for a wonderful video.

Something to keep in mind is after this Darkseid war you would have to kill off a number of heros at the start of the story, these heroes would've acted like the voice of reason to the ones who've survived. Also older heros would support lex because how they view that the former way of doing things hadn't worked. also I'd love to see vice president Amanda Waller or as the secretary of state/defense. I'm not a big fan of the kidnapped family plot point because it's just to flimsy and you could think of something more substantial. Great video btw!

Amazing idea - but I do not think the audience would enjoy seeing Superman turned into a total puppet unless they felt he had some form of trump card. Perhaps Batman does actually work out what is really going on and is working with Superman behind the scenes. Perhaps, he and Superman still fight, but only to keep up a facade so that Luther doesn't realise. This also helps Batman keep his detective roots. So whilst all the chaos and the fighting is going on outside, Batman is still sneaking into government facilities trying to find Superman's family

I had a thought for how to make a Civil War-style storyline happen, which would open discussion on a very.. controversial.. topic. (This idea was for Marvel, not DC, but it could work for either) Generic Citizen 1 goes to Punisher(-like vigilante), and accuses Generic Citizen 2 of a crime. Something terrible, like r*pe or murder. Punisher(-like vigilante) kills Generic Citizen 2. It would never be confirmed, in universe or out of universe, whether or not the crime actually happened. If some writer or actor or janitor or whatever tries to confirm whether it happened or not, they would be fired immediately. A setup like this would lead to the heroes splitting into 2 factions, without having to character assassinate anyone or have a villain blackmail them, while allowing for unconventional teamups. It would also open up discussion into a sensitive topic in the real world. As an example of a strange choice of allegiance, normally, you'd expect She-Hulk, a Lawyer, to go against a character like Punisher, but in this scenario, if you go with the accusation of r*pe, she'd be with him. After all, she herself has assaulted a prison transport driver and broken a guy out of prison because she believed the sentence wasn't long enough (not enough evidence to get him a longer sentence), to allow the accuser to beat him up. So she'd be on his side. (During this story line, I'd love to see her get disbarred for using the fact that she's a superhero to win cases, since what jury's gonna go against the superhero?)

Here is who I think would be on whose side in a DC Civil War: Pro-Registration Superman Wonder Woman Hal Jordan (maybe he gets stripped of his Green Lantern ring at the end of the storyline) The Flash (maybe until a hero gets killed similar to how Goliath got killed) Cyborg Robin (Damian Wayne) Shazam Captain Atom Major Force Red Tornado (he gets reprogrammed and is the one that winds up killing the hero) Captain Comet Hawkman Hawkgirl Black Adam Villains that were offered amnesty and joined Superman's side: Silver Banshee Icicle Killer Frost Mr. Freeze Solomon Grundy Nightshade Gorilla Grodd Brutale Black Manta Giganta Deadshot King Shark Captain Boomerang Eclipso (Jean Loring) Copperhead Cheetah Black Spider Bane Brimstone Girder Anti-Registration Batman Green Arrow Black Canary Martian Manhunter Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) Booster Gold Jade Hourman Nightwing Batgirl Red Hood Red Robin Spoiler Starfire Beast Boy Raven Tempest Troia Arsenal Flash (Wally West) Aquagirl Hawk Dove Black Lightning Katana Geo-Force Halo Metamorpho Amazing Man Plastic Man Argent Red Star Harley Quinn El Diablo The Rogues (Captain Cold, Heat Wave, Weather Wizard, Pied Piper, Magenta, Top, Trickster, Golden Glider) Stargirl STRIPE Wildcat Doctor Mid-Nite Obsidian Looker Captain Boomerang Jr. (Owen Mercer) Amazo Deathstroke (his support is because he refuses to support the government that shunned him) Superboy Supergirl Power Girl Steel Atom Nuklon (he's the hero that gets killed) Lady Shazam King Shazam
@alexhambleton95133 ай бұрын
I think flash (Barry) would retire honestly and just stay out of the fight until maybe he helps Batman with bailing people out. Green lantern would probably just say fuck it and leave the planet and go somewhere else that needs his help, I’d say switch Hal for John; Damian I think would 100% be against being a government puppet same with WW and Shazam but considering he and WW see superman siding with the act they may think it’s the right thing but I see them possibly switching sides half way through
@brittonstegner26103 ай бұрын
@@alexhambleton9513 Yeah, John Stewart is the better fit the more I think about it. Also, I think Aquaman and the Atlanteans would stay on the neutral side of the DC Civil War, the only Atlanteans that don't is Tempest and Aquagirl, who I think would join Batman's side since a bunch of their teammates from the Titans are firmly against registration. I think Wonder Woman, Shazam, Robin and Cyborg would change sides after Nuklon's death, and that would also be when Slade and the Rogues would join the Anti-Reg side when Luthor starts bolstering the Pro-Reg ranks with villains.
@03Pii3 ай бұрын
Why would Batman and Superman be on opposite sides? Superman doesn’t even like the government. Same with a lot of these characters that you picked for pro-registration. There’s a reason why there could never actually be a civil war in the dc universe with the main justice league members or just A class hero’s in general.

EDIT: Just started watching your follow up video and saw this was addressed haha. Good stuff. Cheers! Good video! My only nitpicks are very minor. Luthor’s control of Clark just feels extremely derivative of TDKR 2, and I’m also just not crazy about Clark being with anyone but Lois. Also, having Clark and Lois not together and seeing them act as the other’s support or how she might influence his change of heart or whatever in this kind of story would feel like a HUGE missed opportunity to me. Those are just my personal preferences, however, and I don’t at this time have an alternative. Still really enjoyed the vid! Good work!

I really love the idea of Luthor galvanizing the people of earth against Superheros in the aftermath of a destructive war. Its something we've seen repeatedly throughout real world history while also being in character for Luthor as a schemer and public figure. Lex has always been a character used to explore the inherent corruption of capitalist elites and governmental figures. Also pivoting this DC Civil War into a discussion more about governmental control while not inspired is a way more interesting route than the Zack Snyder idea of Lois cheating with Batman than dying. However speaking of Superman I find your reasoning for him becoming Lex's poster boy kinda of a cop-out and a tad predictable. Supes seems to always become the villian with Batman being the true hero in these kinds of stories. I think it'd be more interesting if you shook things up and had Superman actually get to be the hero that inspires the other generations to go against Lex even if its the harder and less financially stable option for them. Like you said Superman holds so much prestige in the world of Superheros that there's a really neat story opportunity to showcase just how inspiring he can be even to someone at the end of their ropes. But that's just my take. Really interested to see the follow up vids on the idea of a DC civil war.

I would love to see this story fleshed out a lot more, exploring such questions as, Would Superman find a way to get out from under Luthor's thumb? Would his family somehow be saved, or would they die? How long would this Civil War last? Interpersonal conflicts for specific individual heroes? What would the lasting heffects be upon Earth and even the DC Universe as a whole? Which notable heroes would joined up with Batman's resistance movement, which would side with Superman, President Luthor, and the government? Which characters might actually die in this Civil War? How would Batman bring down Luthor? Would Bruce and Clark reconcile their relationship in the end despite the immense challenges and divisions of the Civil War?

I do like this idea, my only thought (just how I'd go about it) is maybe use Agamemno's whole swapping minds so it puts heavy distrust in unregistered heroes or like Magog, cause I get the whole Lex manipulating people thing, but for me it would just make more sense if people started becoming more apposed to unlicensed heroes if they're actually seeing these heroes going off the rails/becoming more violent. Like I said, just how I'd go about it

having someone like the question trying to get to the bottom of why superman could possibly be supporting luthor could be an interesting way of resolving the story. like maybe he has to solve the mystery before the two sides end up actually fighting and killing each other. it does beg the question of what to do with batman, because he would be able to figure it out pretty easily. actually it might be kind of cool to do the inverse of public enemies, where its batman and superman vs everyone but this time on luthors side.

I think the best part about Civil War was that you could see either side's point and you believed in it. By having Lex force Superman's hand just to make it all come together doesn't give us that genuine feeling of two sided conflict
@ngud_gaming2672 ай бұрын
Honestly I love the lex being the spear head idea but I think what would be more storyline accurate is Amanda waller being the one who initiates the registration and does it with brutal and ruthless effect. Kind of like the current run wheres she's just rounding up every super. She'd have the suicide squad and other black gate inmates to use as her "winter soldiers" and would have easy government backing.

I really like this pitch. The only two things I didn't like were what you did with Superman. Like you pointed out in the last minute of your video, there would come a tipping point where blackmail and kidnapping his loved ones isn't going to work on Superman. I maintain that that kind of leverage is a very, VERY temporary predicament for Superman. Because if they really were holding his wife and child hostage somewhere, Superman would be spending every available second thinking of a way out for him and them. And he doesn't have to sleep either, so his power scouring the globe whenever Lex isn't looking makes this a tenuous trump card for the billionaire. Not to mention Clark's real ace in the hole is Batman. Both Batman and Superman would constantly be looking to break the hold Lex has. If Batman, the greatest human tactician of all time, really was going to war then the first question he'd ask is who's in command here? Superman... or Lex? If Lex is pulling all the strings, "then I just have to cut them," he'd say. He wouldn't win the war by fighting Superman. He'd immediately set his sights on Lex and make it top priority to reacquire his most powerful asset (Superman.) The second thing is Clark not being with Lois. That kind of blasphemy is like Peter Parker not getting to be with Mary Jane. But I really enjoy the in-world reasons you came up with for this event happening in the first place. I like that the heroes are a little older and wiser and wearier coming off of a big war with Darkseid. And Darkseid destroying a decent chunk of the Earth. And Lex being there and helping to win the day, also making himself more electable in the process. Great setup. Honestly, the setup is so good that you have the solution to the Superman problem set up as well. Because what makes Marvel's Civil War so good? To me, it's the fact that both Steven and Tony are committed to their causes. They actually both believe in what they're doing. It makes it a genuine clash of ideas rather than just a villain holding the leash kind of story. I think because Superman is a character that feels so much responsibility, he's going to feel a LOT of guilt being unable to save billions of lives from Darkseid. And maybe when Lex helped come up with the solution in that war, perhaps Superman and Lex genuinely formed a bit of a partnership even in that phase of the story. Maybe...Superman genuinely believes in Lex as president and this version of the registration. They're friends again (like Smallville) and that way, Lex doesn't have to kidnap anyone (and his wife can still be Lois.) They're just genuinely working together and that's what makes it more interesting when Batman has to oppose both of them. Just my not-quite-brief thoughts.

Interestingly enough, Smallville had a similar concept to this in the form of the MRA (Metahuman Registration Act) during season 9 & 10 (I think?) with General Slade Wilson and even Task Force X at the helm of it all

I partially agree I think that a key change that you should make is that Superman doesn't know that his wife and child is being held hostage or kidnapped by Luther in fact I think instead what you should do is that he thinks that they had died during the dark side attack because of his inability to make a good decision and his emotional compromise state is what leads him to agree with Luther but Luther secretly unbeknownst to Superman actually has his wife and child in captivity
