Short Summary for [How I would Study Abroad (If I could start over)] Today, we discuss harnoor's decision-making process for studying abroad, considering factors like intent, experience, and challenges faced. [00:00] The main decision-making factors for studying abroad are intent, choice of major, exposure to different cultures, building a profile, and earning money. - Intent: Consider why you want to study abroad - lifestyle, work experience, experiencing a new country, or seeking a scholarship - Choice of Major: Choose a major based on your preference, not just rank or availability in Indian colleges - Exposure to Different Cultures: Meet new roommates and people from different countries - Building a Profile: Gain experiences working in different companies and environments - Earning Money: Consider opportunities for internships and earning potential after returning to India [02:28] Moving abroad comes with challenges but can be solved by making friends and being self-reliant. - Challenge 1: Emotional disconnect from your country and feeling of being away from friends and family. - Challenge 2: High crime rate in the US, so always have a friend when walking alone at night. - Challenge 3: Being self-reliant and self-sufficient in solving financial and emotional problems. - Considerations: Prioritize priorities and make the decision based on them. [05:06] USA or Canada: Which is better for settling and earning fast? - Salaries in Silicon Valley are crazy and higher in the USA, compared to Canada. - However, salary in Canada is 1.5 times lower than in Silicon Valley. - Living expenses and taxes are higher in Canada. - Job security and permanent residency are easier to obtain in Canada. [07:10] Flexibility to work outside of campus is more in Canada - Changing streams is possible but math or science is preferred - Expensive living and high rents are major cons in North America - Cooking your own food is necessary to cut down on living costs - Choosing universities wisely is important for a successful career - The cost of education does not always determine job prospects - An affordable degree can still lead to a successful career [09:35] Universities are business first - Learning is secondary to the business aspect of universities - Networking is an important aspect of university education [11:53] Careerists offers remote jobs and advance courses in QA automation and sales engineering. - Salaries range from 65 to 110k US dollars. - Experience is required for the advanced courses. - Students get access to a job search system and job application service. - Careerists provides mentorship, live interaction and recorded sessions. - Grades, exams like SAT, TOEFL or IELTS, and DET are important for university applications. - IELTS or TOEFL is required for Canada, while both TOEFL and IELTS are required for UK. [14:03] Expenses and considerations for university applications - Different exams have different fees - Fee waivers are available for those who cannot afford [16:20] Sending scores and writing recommendation letters are crucial for admissions - Sending TOEFL scores to universities can be done by TOEFL itself or by paying fees - Writing a unique statement of purpose and recommendation letters is important [18:32] Scholarships are different in US and Canada - US has more scholarship opportunities - There are also other financial aid opportunities [20:37] Applying to multiple universities can increase your chances of getting aid or scholarships - Make a diverse list of universities to apply to, including both top schools and average schools - Apply to up to 20 universities, but don't apply to more than 10-15 - Put in effort to write essays and statements of purpose for each university - The more competitive your profile, the fewer universities you can apply to - Scholarship opportunities vary between countries, with more examples of 100% scholarships in the US - Funding for grad school is often tied to teaching or research assistantships - Reach out to universities and professors to find job opportunities and funding [22:35] Scholarship opportunities and funding for US and Canada universities - Various scholarships and funding options are available for undergraduate and graduate studies in the US and Canada. - In the US, keywords such as '100% scholarship' and 'research scholarships' are important to keep in mind while applying. - In Canada, you may need to deposit $10,000 in a Canadian bank, which will be refunded in installments after one year. - Visa fees are similar for both countries, but the US requires the applicant to demonstrate confidence during the visa interview. [24:56] Money is not everything - Focus on building a strong network - A well balanced life is important

@ray_hansika2 жыл бұрын
This is so informative and helpful, Harnoor! Honestly, you were so right about the fact that in India, Ranks decide which College or Major you are going to get which is unfair. People say that entrance exams are completely unbiased, maybe that's true in some aspect but when it comes to deciding which Major you are supposed to take, it shouldn't solely depend on your Rank. Because we can't decide the potential of a candidate based on just that. The student could have so much more to offer. "Competitive" exams have created such a mindset in some people that they start considering themselves superior once they score a high rank and start underestimating others, exceptions are there of course. But it does create a sense of comparison, which is upto some extent, really toxic and unhealthy. And it becomes extremely difficult for students to cope with this immense pressure from everywhere and they just can stay indifferent, as a result self-doubts arise within them, which is so upsetting too. As an individual, no one should feel worthless just because they couldn't pass an entrance exam. In short, do prepare for it if you're interested but don't make it your life, there are other things to focus on, as well. One of the supporting causes of why I want to study abroad too, and your videos have helped me a lot throughout my journey. Nevertheless, I hope you continue to make such amazing content! ✨
