I explain the process of what makes an IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) work. I approach it from the specific context of how their used in chillers.

This is perhaps the most gate kept secret in chillers. Keep up the great work

Great explanation of IGBTs in VFDs! But like someone else mentioned, the bipolar term isn't related to the bi-directional power control. It is strictly related to the actual IGBT itself. Most VFDs will have three IGBT modules and each module has two individual IGBTs in the package. So that is what allows the two way power control, like mentioned in the video. One IGBT for positive and one for negative in one package. Some VFDs will have six or more IGBTs and usually those are one for each polarity and one direction.

Great video. I worked with some York VFD chillers that had to run in the winter in Canada as we needed to cool a museum and maintain perfect humidity and temp control. Had VFD cooling towers and it was connected to a full blown Siemens DDC BAS. Always wondered how those chillers worked in sorta simple terms. It would be interesting to know how VFDs work with cooling towers and BAS controls and large fan systems if you do those.

Great start, but; IGBT, Insulated Gate, Bipolar Transistor. That means it is a BJT with an insulated gate like a MOSFET. Bipolar does not refer to how you connect more 2 or more together. To quote a Google source; "The Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor, (IGBT) combines the insulated gate (hence the first part of its name) technology of the MOSFET with the output performance characteristics of a conventional bipolar transistor, (hence the second part of its name)." Love this. 1.5 years in feel like I’m mechanically solid. But, weak link is these drives. Work on a lot of YT, YK, Cvhf, Cvhe, 19xrs, and 30xw, hxc. Trying to find the link to your class.

igbt, basic principal, they control the "Push and Pull," they push it high then pull it low and modulate that, the highs and low average out into a modified sine wave.

Non related question. I have a roof top condensing unit that is able to communicate with the indoor air handler without a thermostat wire. What could be relaying the on/off of the unit?

why are you showing the thyristor module in the video, and talking about igbt? what is the marking on the power module? 1:00

Is the motor itself the output filter? All the inverters i've worked on have a bank of capacitors and inductors on the output to turn the PWM signal into a true sinewave.

No filters on these designs. The capacitor bank is pre inverter. It's why we have to use inverter due windings

Diode that will conduct only whe given a control signal but will stay conducting until the zero crossing point of the sinewave. They're dumb and expensive, but absolutely bulletproof.

SCR are used as rectifiers in drive assemblies. They remove the sine wave to covert ac to dc
