In this video I show how I use the map to pin point where the true foot should be.
This helps me to recognize when distortion is present.
It enables me to address the distorted hoof capsule in an efficient and accurate way to achieve balance for 'optimal support and comfort for the horse.

I sometimes I get so overwhelmed with information after watching videos that I feel like I know LESS than I thought I knew prior to watching! The hoof is so complex & important that I feel I need to know what I am looking at being an owner of a horse. Stumbled on your channel this morning, thank you for the video it was one of the first that I feel like I actually learned something. Will be helpful for me as I had a NEW farrier out to the farm and shoed a horse for me so now I can monitor his movement & make sure he is aligned properly!

I think this is one of....if not THE BEST video I've seen about trimming because you did such a great job of clearly explaining and demonstrating rach step along with the effects. I especially liked the foot model and how you demontrated what happens within the foot. Thank you very much!

Thank you Dennis. This video, with your explanations, affirmed what I "thought" to be correct. You're the first person who has explained it so completely. Again, thanks

Thank you sir! Most all Hoof deformity is caused by the Farrier proof is ignoring the Coudle portion of the foot. Heels frog sole have a purpose and not concerning where the center is is the beginning of failures. Thanks for Video

Man I wish I had come over worked for you 20 years ago! Your what we call over here a “good stockman”, your attention to the detail of what you see in front of you is something that is missing in the basics of the majority of all training, I’m 44 and have come into horse training and shoeing into a very similar way that you described, never planned to be a farrier or a horse trainer but the two go hand in hand when getting a good stock horse/sports horse started, I’ll look up your on line courses if I can’t get over to see you, all the very best from Nz 🇳🇿

Thanks for the video Dennis, very informative. I’m wondering if you can give your thoughts on shoeing v barefoot. In the modern world horses do much less work than they did in days gone by. No one shoes horses in the wild and they do just fine. Cheers mate from Australia

I believe that when we shoe we force the horse to compensate for our mistakes. When the horse is bare foot and they have an abrasive terrain to travel on the foot will self trim or chip off as needed . However there are a lot of variables that factor in. In dry areas the feet get hard and having no shoes works well but in areas where moisture is plentiful the feet are to soft and most horses need some protection to survive. I’m a bit old. School but I feel that steel nailed yo a good trim is the best solution for the majority of horses in todays world . The trim is the most important element in hoof care .

I noticed the horse squared up after you trimmed it. Before trim he stood offset. 😊 Was the new shoe you sized to him a Natural Balance shoe? Thanks again for another informational video

This horse was trimmed to be shod . If I was not going to shoe him I would have rounded rd edges of his feet to keep them from chipping

My horse is lame now for the third time in a year after shoeing. I like my farrier but I wish I understood more about hooves and farrier work to prevent this from happening. I have a thoroughbred with thin soles. Last time the problem was a hot nail. However when the nail was first placed my horse didn’t show any signs of discomfort. The discomfort started a day later. Is this something you see with TBs and hot nails ? I feel bad for my horse ! And I feel bad for the farrier because I know he is trying

No matter what breed of horse we are working on thin walls and soles can be touchy to deal with . Naturally no farrier wants to quick a horse but if you find on that claims not to do that ever you are either dealing with one that stretches the truth or hasn’t done enough horses yet to find humility. I’d give him a few more chances to get it done with perhaps a better job of shaping the shoes or use a smaller nail or curve the end of the nail Or anything to get the shoe secured to the hoof . If he can’t get it done after 2 or three more times then find a more experienced farrier This should not be a continuous problem when you have the right person for the job doing the nailing But by all means give your current fairrier every chance to rectify his own problem. I bet he will get it done for you. I definitely urge you to follow your desire to learn as much as you can about your horse. If you can’t make one of my Live Courses, then I do have a affordable Online Trimming course and Online Shoeing course that will give you a solid understanding so you can talk on a level with your farrier. You can find them on my website cappeltrainingandshoeing.com Let us know how your horse is going in a couple months.

I looked at a horse to buy & it had this exact problem. Who is training these farriers that don't know how to do what you are talking about. I'm not a farrier and in fact don't have a lot of experience with shoes, because I was able to have my horses go barefoot, but I thought why aren't they cutting back the toe more to balance the hoof. (sorry, probably wrong terminology)I've seen this same thing on several horses so it seems to be an issue lately. Are the farriers not getting proper training?

The reason they don't trim closer to the toe is because you get closer to the nerves when trimming off more toe. In doing this you take the risk of laming up the horse if you get too close. If you are a professional shoer relying on your next meal from word of mouth not many are willing to take the risk of trimming too close as you will have people talking crap about you very quickly about their horse being sore and lame. So everyone has become accustomed to looking at horses that look like they are walking like ducks with swim fins on. Darn sure won't walk of lame immediately but navicular is on it's way one day along with bowed tendons. Funny how the antidote for navicular via the vets expert diagnosis for the last 40 years is to put them up higher on their toes along with pads. This is what should have been done to begin with minus the pads. Takes more time to shoe one right so you might only shoe 5 horses that day instead of 7 so the money isn't there either.

@@markmahnken6409 The recent horse that I looked at was lame. It didn't look to have much heel. I was told by the owner she knew she didn't have much heell and she shouldn't have had the shoes taken off. She was going to have shoes put back on and that was going to solve the lameness. I haven't heard back. I looked at a different horse a while back, same "no heel" issue. I spoke to the farrier & he said she would need wedges to keep her from going lame. He said it was too late for her to grow enough heel. She was 20.
