China. But, since the ‘factory of the world’ had got infected, economies across the globe began to feel unwell. Store shelves were emptying out. Businesses were running low on inventory. So, companies with big manufacturing units in China began to rethink their Beijing-bets. Make in India is an initiative by the Government of India to make and encourage companies to develop, manufacture and assemble products made in India and incentivize dedicated investments into manufacturing. The policy approach was to create a conducive environment for investments, develop a modern and efficient infrastructure, and open up new sectors for foreign capital. The initiative targeted 25 economic sectors for job creation and skill enhancement, and aimed "to transform India into a global design and manufacturing export hub.
"Make in India" had three stated objectives:
to increase the manufacturing sector's growth rate to 12-14% per annum;
to create 100 million additional manufacturing jobs in the economy by 2022;
to ensure that the manufacturing sector's contribution to GDP is increased to 25% by 2022 (later revised to 2025).[5]
After the launch, India gave investment commitments worth ₹16.40 lakh crore (US$210 billion) and investment inquiries worth of ₹1.5 lakh crore (US$19 billion) between September 2014 to February 2016.[6][7][8] As a result, India emerged as the top destination globally in 2015 for foreign direct investment (FDI), surpassing the United States and China, with US$60.1 billion FDI. As per the current policy, 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is permitted in all 100 sectors, except for Space industry (74%), defence industry (49%) and Media of India (26%).Japan and India had also announced a US$12 billion 'Japan-India Make-in-India Special Finance Facility" fund to push investment.

Keeping patriotism and emotions aside, the real answer is NO. We cannot beat China in manufacturing. Land acquisitions is extremely expensive in india, local policies, constant protests, interference by opposition or even local level MLA etc is a headache for companies. We do not have world class road infrastructure, our ports are under developed. We are just good at screaming Make in India loudly but we won't work on the grass root problems affecting our our manufacturing.

India definitely has a large population but becoming a global manufacturing power we need a large skilled force skilled . Unfortunately a large percentage of indias work force is unskilled. Another factor is participation of women in indias workforce . Participation of women has successively declined in indias work force. It needs to be revived . We though have potential but we lack expertise to put it to good use .

And was not happy to see luxury clothing brands having Made in Bangladesh tag , instead of Made in India. It actually speaks a lot that we are still very small in each sector, behind Bangladesh in Textile, behind Vietnam in manufacturing, can't even think of china. Made in Indonesia is also a big tag here's, but not Made in India

Since its independence, India has been refusing to industrialize, so its manufacturing industry is facing the dilemma of no foundation. India must start from scratch, and more importantly, it needs to carry out a series of reforms. If India wants to revitalize the manufacturing industry and become an important global economy comparable to China in the future, it must abolish the caste system, carry out land reform and eliminate poverty. Religious rule, etc., but everyone knows that for India, trouble will come. Reform has never been an easy way. There are so many interests behind the old system. In most cases, leaders who implement reform will be "swallowed" by the wave of reform. This is especially true for countries such as India, which have a theocracy system. India's biggest problem is the lack of a politician with a real strategic vision, like Deng Xiaoping of China and Merkel of Germany. Modi's government is better at engaging in political speculation and inciting nationalism,Therefore, revitalizing the manufacturing industry will become a political slogan in the mouth of politicians.

Read the comments.... understand the importance of INFRASTRUCTURE. India focussed on a service economy last 30 years, providing cheap IT labour for the west. China focussed on building infrastructure. India has to build out infrastructure like roads and ports and power plants to have a large manufacturing base. The biggest problem I see is that China did this for the past 30 years when oil was cheap. India will have to this during a time when oil is expensive. China is 30 years ahead of India, it would take another 20-30 years before India can reach the industrial age, in total 50-60 years.

India should focus on quality rather than quantity. India can be the largest economy in the world, but what's the point when it's the most unequal country. What I see happening in the future is, the top 10% will continue to hoard 90% of the wealth, whilst the rest of the India's population will not see their wealth or income that much. So, you will be in situation where the country will be very rich with 90% of population still living in poverty.

In this term we might again see the drain of manufacturing from India to some other country in next 30-40 years. What should be our strategy to overcome this future situation. We might see a similar situation like Japan or China. Your thoughts please?

China is currently way ahead and I don't think even being at no 2 will hurt the population of China.
