Frankly Indias military budget makes sense.The threat of a land attack is real.And the USA could have a 5% army budget and still be fine, there is NO THREAT, i repeat, no threat of an attacking land force.So ofcourse they allocate more to the navy to control the world and secure their hegemony.Excellent production btw.
@Kamome163
@Kamome163 Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Mhhh I think that both land threats are quite stretch. Pakistan conventional force is not on par with India's and I would pay good money to see how the Chinese army could keep supply lines across the Himalaya for a large scale land operation. I think that the Indian budget is heavily skewed towards the army whereas could exert more deterrence by improving its air and naval capabilities.

Nice video. I think you could also add few points. 1. India has signed treaty with US so that each other can use others bases for refuelling. 2. India has also signed another pact with Americans for satellite image sharing. 3. Malabar exercise which you covered has significant importance. It's annual exercise conducted specially to counter the Chinese in IOR region. 4. Indian Navy expansion is happening at a brisk space. 2 operational AC by 3-4 months. Also there is a repeat order for another AC. Most probably Rafael-m fighters. Though we can't match the pace at which Chinese are building ships in numbers, our planners clearly know where to draw the Chinese and where we have advantage. 5. Brahmos missiles has almost 100% kill rate if 2/more is fired. Also now they have extended range of 450- 800 km and near hypersonic speed. Navy ordered 200 more additional warheads for its frontline ships 6. Andaman islands are considered as unsinkable ship. Indian planners know the very fact and is trying to make this impenetrable fort specifically to counter the Chinese. There are also many airfields coming up here.
@Kamome163

Thanks K, I mostly agree with your points. I think getting IOC for the new AC will be a lengthy process since there are many new complex systems on board, not to mention train the crews that will operate on board. India definitely needs to invest more into it's navy and naval defense. The Andaman islands are the perfect point to block the block the Malaca Strait from the Indian ocean. China knows this which is partially why they increase tensions along the Himalayas. This convinces the Indian government to worry more about their Ground forces rather than Naval forces. But the longer this trend continues, the more this will work to India's detriment. Great video as always Kamome. One interesting video to think about in the future maybe to talk about Indonesia and it's geopolitical importance. I feel like they would be very important in a future conflict with China.

Totally agree. China much rather have India focused on its land border in the Himalayas than on the Malacca strait. And data (India's military budget allocation) shows that India hasn't fully committed to a stronger Navy yet, buttressing the army's capabilities first. India is in a lose-lose scenario here. If they reduce their land forces, then they risk losing more territory to China AND Pakistan. But, if they don't buttress the Navy, they lose out in the long term. This reminds me of what the French Govt told Montcalm when he asked for reinforcements during the 7 years war: "Eh, monsieur, when the house is on fire one cannot occupy one’s self with the stable". Needless to say, the French lost out in the long term and lost the North American continent.

They could also rely on allies like the US to cover their naval weaknesses if they are willing. They may very well decide to allow a US base in the Andaman and Nicobar islands in addition to their own bases. It's obviously a complicated game to play though and introduces it's own set of advantages and drawbacks, it just depends on how big of a threat they feel China is, how willing they are to cooperate with a strong power like the US that tends to push it's weight around in relationships, and if it can afford to spend more on it's own navy so as to not neglect it.
@anuragc1565

China understands the geostrategic importance of Andman and Nicobar Island. Thus, to distract India from developing this island region it often stokes up tension along the Himalayan border either directly or through its surrogate Pakistan so that india keeps spending it's defence budget on building infrastructure along the border area in the anticipation of a war, instead of investing in bolstering its naval power. To my mind China has no real interest in Arunachal or Kashmir region but they have deliberately kept the border issues alive so that they can keep India distracted. Meanwhile they are looking for alternatives to Malacca so that in case of a war their supply route isn't choked.

Thank you for watching! Quick housekeeping: - For the border used in this video we followed the de-facto borders in white and the contested ares in orange. - At 07:50 those are the 12NM territorial waters - At 04:27 The main issue that happened in the last years is that very large LNG and oil Tankers face two main issues in traversing the Panama Canal. Draft requirements and long waiting lists. Tankers requires deep drafts and the Panama Canal shallower point is in Gatineau Lake. It’s depth has varied in the past related to weather and rains availability. The second issue is related to the system adopted at Panama. Only a certain amount of Ships can safely traverse the locks each day. Thus there’s a booking system. Ships that do not book in advance, and we’re talking about months, must wait for weeks for their turn. The increasing number of vessels and of demand for oil and gas products creates a bottleneck at Panama. As you can read in the resources provided, some shipping companies prefers the longer Indo-Atlantic route for these reasons. We are talking about a minority of the trade, but a significant one.

I say this pretty much universally about the entire population here. My recently moved in next door neighbor is a young Christian pastor from India, his wife and 3 children and they are wonderful neighbors. It would make me very happy to see the two nations develop even closer relationship and India continue to progress as they are an invaluable bulwark of certain shared values but without being overly influenced by some of the more decadent aspects of US culture since they have their own. Maybe the most ideal example of two nations who share just enough interests without disturbing each other from their own goals.

Interesting analysis. But everyone know Malacca Strait is inside the Malaysia's and Indonesia's territory. And everyone know most of shipping line in Malacca Strait is through the main corridor of 6th Degree Channel (inside Indonesia's EEZ) rather than Andaman Sea. China also doesn't really need the Preparis Channel since they can do trading with neighbor countries through land routes. For trading with Europe, Middle East and African, China's shipping line could also through Sri Lanka's EEZ to avoid India's EEZ. That's why China build ports in Sri Lanka, and put Sri Lanka into China's debt trap. This means, India don't have significant role or control on Malacca Strait. It's Indonesia, not to mention that Sunda Strait is also inside the Indonesia's territory.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands is a strategic boon, to India that ancient Indians didn't know of. Thus, this very important fact is needed to be factored in, in the strategic picture of India - reflected in her foreign policy. The British who ruled India knew this importance and maintained their strong hold on the North Indian Ocean from Suez canal to Singapore. From New Delhi, their Viceroy could monitor their Imperial possessions - Egypt once, Aden (now incorporated in Yemen), the Gulf countries as their Malayan settlements well. They also oversaw their possessions on African coast. Their (Imperial) hold was necessary for the continuity of their Empire. India (post independence) didn't continue following their cue. Thus India by default, invited all big powers' presence in this (maritime) region & the consequent rivalries, detrimental to her national interests finally. Yet, it is never too late for India.

@@chi-8289 Samuel Huntington's as well as Francis Fukuyama's books are passe, now. The only area these theses are applicable now is where Muslims live in great numbers. In that again, like the Roman Empire (or Christianity, for that matter) splitting in two, practice of Islam has also two versions - one is the main Middle Eastern version (Arabian-Iranian-Turkish cultures), the other is totally (ethnically) different Eastern version with greatest number in Indonesia (followed by, in India), Bangladesh & Malaysia. The glaring schism is swept under the carpet. In the Eastern version Islam was introduced through very peaceful means by Arabian traders beginning sometime in the tenth century - in contrast to mainland (Central & Southern Asia), by sword. Remember that SE Asia (with Malacca & the other straits) is globally the foremost trading region in the world, that no other area can equal. The contention (trade) between South Asia & East Asia for SE Asia, is a factor. Islam needs to guard itself against the resurgence of earlier faiths in its (population majority) own lands.

Samuel Huntington's facts and predictions are so accurate that he even foresaw the second take over of Taliban 30 years ago. Islam goes in cycles. Ata turk had banned Islam in Turkey and Turkey almost became a modern country, and now it's going back. Same with Afghanistan, Iran, all were extremely liberal countries 70 years ago after a long period of Islamic darkness. South East Asia is better because still there are large minorities left there, and huge non islamic population with Chinese and Indian civilizational connections, and as islam becomes more and more in majority , their downward spiral will start. Already laws in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia etc are highly undemocratic and designed to increase muslim population. The prosperity you see in the region is only because the United States wanted it to be, and unquestioned, unequal relationship with the United States in return for complete access to the US market. There are no this Islam and that islam. All 55 islamic countries are undemocratic, have no history of human rights and have no major achievements. While the Malacca Strait is still a major weakness for China trade wise and on the naval strategic front, their increasingly close ties with Russia negates the most important problem China had regarding this part of the world: oil & natural gas. Numerous pipelines have been built through Mongolia and between the two countries with more to come. I'm also not convinced that India considers the US an ally. Their stance on the conflict in Ukraine should clearly show where India's true alignments lie: not with the US. They do great business together sure, but banking on India joining the US's last gasp at world hegemony in Taiwan is quite unlikely.

Sharing below written by a Malaysian KZbinr: I’m from Malaysia. China has traded with Malaysia for 2000 years. In those years, they had been the world’s biggest powers many times. Never once they sent troops to take our land. China's admiral Zhenghe came to Malacca five times, in gigantic fleets, and a flagship eight times the size of Christopher Columbus’ flagship, Santa Maria. He could have seized Malacca easily, but he did not. In 1511, the Portuguese came. In 1642, the Dutch came. In the 18th century the British came. We were colonised by each, one after another. When China wanted spices from India, they traded with the Indians. When they wanted gems, they traded with the Persian. They didn’t take lands. The only time China expanded beyond their current borders was in Yuan Dynasty, when Genghis and his descendants Ogedei Khan, Guyuk Khan & Kublai Khan concurred China, Mid Asia and Eastern Europe. But Yuan Dynasty, although being based in China, was a part of the Mongolian Empire. Then came year 1800, the Century of Humiliation. Britain smuggled opium into China to dope the population, a strategy to turn the trade deficit around, after the British could not find enough silver to pay the Qing Dynasty in their tea and porcelain trades and the doping went on for over 30 years. After the opium warehouses were burned down and ports were closed by the Chinese in ordered to curb opium, the British started the Opium War I, which China lost. Hong Kong was forced to be surrendered to the British in a peace talk (Nanjing Treaty). The British owned 90% of the opium market in China, during that time, Queen Victoria was the world’s biggest drug baron. The remaining 10% was owned by American merchants from Boston. Many of Boston’s institutions were built with profit from opium. After 12 years of Nanjing Treaty, the West started getting really really greedy. The British wanted the Qing government: 1. To open the borders of China to allow goods coming in and out freely, and tax free. 2. Make opium legal in China. Insane requests, Qing government said no. The British and French (with supports from the US), started Opium War II with China, which again, China lost. The Anglo-French military raided the Summer Palace, and threatened to burn down the Imperial Palace, the Qing government was forced to pay with ports, free business zones, 300,000 kilograms of silver and Kowloon was taken. Since then, China’s resources flew out freely through these business zones and ports. In the subsequent amendment to the treaties, Chinese people were sold overseas to serve as labor. In 1900, China suffered attacks by the 8-National Alliance. These 8-Robbers were: Empire of Japan, Russian Empire, British Empire (including India), France, USA, Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary. Innocent Chinese civilians in Peking (Beijing now) were murdered, buildings were destroyed & women were raped. The Imperial Palace was raided, and treasures ended up in museums like the British Museum in London and the Louvre in Paris. In late 1930s China was occupied by the Japanese in WWII. Millions of Chinese died during the occupancy. 300,000 Chinese died in Nanjing Massacre alone. Mao brought China together again from the shambles. There were peace and unity for some time. But Mao’s later reign saw sufferings and deaths from famine and power struggles. Then came Deng Xiao Ping and his infamous “black-cat and white-cat” story. His preference in pragmatism than ideologies transformed China. This thinking allowed China to evolve all the time to adapt to the actual needs in the country, instead of rigidly bounded to ideologies. It also signified the death of Communism in actually practice in China. The current Socialism+Meritocracy+Market Economy model fits the Chinese like gloves, and it propels the uprise of China. Singapore has a similar model, and has been arguably more successful than Hong Kong, because Hong Kong being gateway to China, was riding on the economic boom in China, while Singapore had no one to gain from. In just 30 years, the CPC have moved 800 millions of people out from poverty. The rate of growth is unprecedented in human history. They have built the biggest mobile network, by far the biggest high speed rail network in the world, and they have become a behemoth in infrastructure. They made a fishing village called Shenzhen into the world’s second largest technological centre after the Silicon Valley. They are growing into a technological power house. It has the most elaborate e-commerce and cashless payment system in the world. They have launched exploration to Mars. The Chinese are living a good life and China has become one of the safest countries in the world. The level of patriotism in the country has reached an unprecedented height. For all of the achievements, the West has nothing good to say about it. China suffers from intense anti-China propagandas from the West. Western Media used the keyword “Communist” to instil fear and hatred towards China. Everything China does is negatively reported. They claimed China used slave labor in making iPhones. The truth was, Apple was the most profitable company in the world, it took most of the profit, leave some to Foxconn (a Taiwanese company) and little to the labor. They claimed China was inhuman with one-child policy. At the same time, they accused China of polluting the earth with its huge population. The fact is the Chinese consume just 30% of energy per capita compared to the US. They claimed China underwent ethnic cleansing in Xinjiang. The fact is China has a policy which priorities ethnic minorities. For a long time, the ethnic minorities were allowed to have two children and the majority Han only allowed one. The minorities are allowed a lower score for university intakes. There are 39,000 mosque in China, and 2100 in the US. China has about 3 times more mosque per muslim than the US. When terrorist attacks happened in Xinjiang, China had two choices: 1. Re-educate the Uighur extremists before they turned terrorists. 2. Let them be, after they launch attacks and killed innocent people, bomb their homes. China chose option 1 to solve problem from the root and not to do killing. How the US solve terrorism? Fire missiles from battleships, drop bombs from the sky. During the pandemic, when China took extreme measures to lockdown the people, they were accused of being inhuman. When China recovered swiftly because of the extreme measures, they were accused of lying about the actual numbers. When China’s cases became so low that they could provide medical support to other countries, they were accused of politically motivated. Western Media always have reasons to bash China. Just like any country, there are irresponsible individuals from China which do bad and dirty things, but the China government overall has done very well. But I hear this comment over and over by people from the West: I like Chinese people, but the CPC is evil. What they really want is the Chinese to change the government, because the current one is too good. Fortunately China is not a multi-party democratic country, otherwise the opposition party in China will be supported by notorious NGOs (Non-Government Organization) of the USA, like the NED (National Endowment for Democracy), to topple the ruling party. The US and the British couldn’t crack Mainland China, so they work on Hong Kong. Of all the ex-British colonial countries, only the Hong Kongers were offered BNOs by the British. Because the UK would like the Hong Kongers to think they are British citizens, not Chinese. A divide-and-conquer strategy, which they often used in Color Revolutions around the world. They resort to low dirty tricks like detaining Huawei’s CFO & banning Huawei. They raised a silly trade war which benefits no one. Trade deficit always exist between a developing and a developed country. USA is like a luxury car seller who ask a farmer: why am I always buying your vegetables and you haven’t bought any of my cars? When the Chinese were making socks for the world 30 years ago, the world let it be. But when Chinese started to make high technology products, like Huawei and DJI, it caused red-alert. Because when Western and Japanese products are equal to Chinese in technologies, they could never match the Chinese in prices. First world countries want China to continue in making socks. Instead of stepping up themselves, they want to pull China down. The recent movement by the US against China has a very important background. When Libya, Iran, and China decided to ditch the US dollar in oil trades, Gaddafi’s was killed by the US, Iran was being sanctioned by the US, and now it’s China’s turn. The US has been printing money out of nothing. The only reason why the US Dollar is still widely accepted, is because it’s the only currency which oil is allowed to be traded with. The US has an agreement with Saudi that oil must be traded in US dollar ONLY. Without the petrol-dollar status, the US dollars will sink, and America will fall. Therefore anyone trying to disobey this order will be eliminated. China will soon use a gold-backed crypto-currency, the alarms in the White House go off like mad. China’s achievement has been by hard work. Not by looting the world. I have deep sympathy for China for all the suffering, but now I feel happy for them. China is not rising, they are going back to where they belong. Good luck China.

Indians should not be offended over the subtle shades of maps regarding the disputed regions. Because : 1. It *is* actually true that parts of Indian territory are under either Pakistani control or under Chinese administration. So these are meant to be marked differently. 2. Also, younger people, Indian or otherwise who are new to Geography and International relations or people who are simply unaware should know the importance of disputed regions marked clearly whenever they watch news or the like. 3. In videos which are geographical issue-centric are honestly better if territories belonging to every country as well as disputed regions are marked *clearly*. It makes the learning/watching experience a hundred times better. Because disputed regions are ever expanding/contracting whenever major skirmishes happen over the years. Would be nice to witness how they change over the years.

No, Malacca Strait is NOT China's main weakness. China's main weakness is its inability to co-exist with other countries, other races, political ideologies and government. China needs everything to run according to its blueprint for it to success - that include people from other countries speaking Chinese languages (namely Mandarin), follow Chinese political systems (mainly the Communist system) and think at level of a Chinese. In this video, they already stated that China imports large amount of oil through the Strait of Malacca which is why it tries to control it, and therefore Malacca Strait is its weakness. I could agree to a certain extend - because China also tries to bypass this weakness by launching the BRI project which cuts through Asia to reach Middle East. However, China does not require to be so possessive of Strait of Malacca IF it learned to co-exist with other nations, which it had failed to do since 1960s.

In the event of a major conflict between China and the US in the Western Pacific, China does not need to rely on the Indian Ocean route for energy supplies. It will get oil/gas to fight a long war the following ways such as its vast petroleum reserve, ESPO pipeline oil from Russia and Kazakhstan-China oil pipeline, Power of Siberia 1 (50 BCM gas), and POS 2 (50 BCM gas, under construction), Gas pipeline from Turkmenistan, Russian oil by tanker trains. China's own production (about 4M bpd if memory serves) Numerous coal plants, a lot of coal, Russian LNG from Yamal Pennisular by Novetek's Ice Class LNG ships, China's renewable power generation which has the highest capacity in the world. *** Russia and China just signed a Mutual Support Pact *** in Moscow on 21-March which gaurantees China will get all the energy (oil, gas coal, uranium), metal, fertiliser, and food it needs in case of any interference in China trade routes and embargo scenarios. There is the Northern Passage which will soon makes the Indian Ocean optional year round. There is obvious numerous land routes with Russia and the middle BRI corridor. India blockade enroute will still have to deal with Saudi, Iran and Russia for blockading their China bound oil tankers. India will get no oil from them, and India has no land pipelines from Russia, Turkmanistan, or Khazastan ... Consequences for India : this act of war will bring on war with China in the north (>5x GDP), war of opportunity with Pakistan so a 2 front land war, and sea war with OPEC+ especially Iran, Saudi, and Russia in the Indian Ocean starting with oil/LNG embargo.
